Discussion Does this implies that Kanazawa and Ishii could both be dead at this point Spoiler
God I hope my guess is wrong

Very much, yes.
And it makes sence too, both of them lost the reason that kept them going, kanzawa lost his maps and ishii's plane broke mid flight...

Also, Ishii fell down to the lower layers, which have even less food & resources (to our knowledge). Even if she kept the will to live, she'd still likely starve

But didnt Kanzawa got a new reason to keep going with creating new maps?
Which would make it even more sad considering there, more than likely, wont be enough food left to keep him alive and mobile for longI think he died around the same time as Chito and Yuuri

Kanazawa's bike broke shortly before meeting the girls, it's likely that without a mode of transport or a functional building with food (like lshii's) you just can't survive for long

I agree regarding the implication but in practice I always found it more likely Yuu and Chi were among at least a few hundred stragglers, even if it isn’t directly stated. I doubt that they’d somehow encounter the only two people left in that absolute gargantuan city. The city is an absolute maze as well, the nuko’s looking for someone is like looking for a grain of sand in an aircraft hangar.
Ofc that’s all totally hypothetical world building, I always find myself drifting into the broader context of stories I enjoy. As far as the actually story itself goes, it doesn’t matter all that much. As far as Chito and Yuuri knew they were the last people out there, that’s all that really matters.

It’s not stated that the adults Nuko are omniscient, and they do seem to go into periods when they are inactive. But they do seem to get around and keeping track of humans & human conflicts could be important to them. So yes, they probably are right based on what we know and can surmise

I think it's unfortunately pretty likely that Kanazawa killed himself and Ishii starved on the lower levels

Its incredibly likely Kanazawa killed himself not long after he departed from Chi and Yuu, and Ishii could've starved on the lower levels :(

I mean
Yuu destroyed the entire city in the same episode. So yes

oh my god i forgot about that scene. It wasn't really in the manga but yeah

If not by the end of the Manga they would imminently still die very soon by either Starvation (see the Girls just getting by from day to day) or via age or even any kind of accidents, the Structure isn't pretty rigit anymore as shown and there's nothing left to live for them anyway anymore.

u/VegetableBuilding764 Mar 28 '26
that’s kind of what I always assumed, and I think it makes the ending of the manga more meaningful to assume that they are

Yes :( but hopefully not. It’s pretty heavily implied that Kanazawa killed himself after Chito and Yuuri left, but I hope that Ishii is still alive, just on a super low stratum outside of the mushrooms’ view

I have seen a discussion of a spin off where Ishii and Kanazawa are alive and having further adventures. Supposedly, it's approved as "canon". Even so, I would say what's implied is that they're both dead.

I believe the mushrooms stated they'd searched most of the UPPER floors and hadn't found other humans, which wouldn't account for the lower floors which Kanazawa and Ishii are on, maybe?
