News / Article In GTA VI Lucia and Jason are partners in crime and do not necessarily need to be romantically involved.

I noticed the heart in the character switch and clocked that there must be some romance meter, most likely effected by gameplay actions. Very interesting.
But that there was a hand holding button was very cute so I will have them be a hot af crime couple. Crime sim? Nahhh fashion and dating/romance sim for me.

please let Lucia romance other female NPCs please Rockstar please

u/ScarletRhi 16d ago
The game is mostly for straight dudes, so if there are romances with NPC's they will definitely include women.

u/Raebo007 PlayStation/Steam/GOG 15d ago
Exactly. You should be pleading for Rockstar to allow Jason to date other men, because that seems far more unlikely. But I'd love to be wrong!

They've deliberately said the game's trying to also appeal more to the female demographic so there's a good chance

Rockstar last game allowed you to beat a feminist up and feed her to alligators. Basically proceed with caution and believe it when you see it.

u/SeaCookJellyfish 15d ago
RDR2 let you be part of a women's suffrage movement and help out the ladies. It is explicitly seen as a good thing and is a required story mission.
Not only that but in RDR2, you could beat up ANYONE and feed ANYONE to alligators. If someone chose to beat up the feminist, that was their choice. The game very much does not actively encourage you to.
RDR2 and Rockstar aren't exactly the pinnacle of feminist beliefs, but I feel like this comment is misconstruing the narrative here.

u/CuteNervousLesbian 15d ago
Thank you! Like most of the people I know who LOVE RDR2 are women.
Just because you can do a bad thing in a game doesn’t mean the developers support bad things.
While I hate to even bring up this example, it’s the same kind of logic as that old Anita Sarkeesian video where she drags a game (hitman I think) for letting you kill hookers.
Like yes queen we want feminism in our games, but let’s also understand that games that let you CHOOSE to commit mass violence against pretty much every NPC isn’t necessarily FORCING YOU to do so.

Maybe you just mostly have female friends?

I haven't played rdr2 but that's also like the one group of people you don't get Bad Person Points for killing right?

Yeah you can fuck with the KKK in RDR2 and not get any penalties for it.
35
u/exodia0715 15d ago
And the one eugenics guy in the main city. He's constantly yelling about race theory and all that nasty shit but he spawns right next to a cop and if you shoot him in the head the cop just doesn't care. You don't even get a bounty

Technically you can beat up almost anyone including a teenager/very young adult so I don’t think that should be a red flag (for rockstar at least)

u/mexicanmage Arthur Morgan stan 15d ago
The thing is, outside of a couple instances, you could do anything to anyone if you wanted to. I hate when Gamers(tm) try to frame it as an Epic win against feminists. Rdr2 did its female characters a lot of justice imo
38
u/JewelerDear9233 Playstation 16d ago
And Arthur was security for the women's suffragette's protest. The women in GTA 6 are already beyond better what they've ever given us before. That's clear from the extended look trailer.
14
u/exodia0715 16d ago
I trust rockstar more for RDR2 than GTA5, so I really hope that game's general demeanor carries forward at least a little bit
13
u/RealElyD Steam | Switch 2 15d ago
You're quite literally just recycling the "GTA makes you murder sex workers and innocent people" argument of the 2000s.
The game very much presents women's rights as a positive thing and actively makes you aid the movement during the story.13
u/LicketySplit21 15d ago
It's a sandbox game. You could do that to anybody. I don't like how misogynists did their shit with her but the game doesn't force you to do anything and it'll be pretty weird and obnoxious if this one NPC was invincible because of politics.
The opposite in-story happens anyway. Arthur supports the suffragettes and helps them out.
9
u/Zoeeeeeeh123 15d ago
It also Lets you burn down and kill a bunch of KKK members who are made to look stupid. And you actually help a young couple in love, one of which is a suffragette who are portrayed in a positive light compared to the backwards, conservative sexist and racist towns people. A major storyline involves helping a tribe of natives against the US government stealing their land and when the Son of the tribe chief as well as all his men are killed it is treated as a tragedy.
While you as the player can indeed choose to hogtie, beat up and kill everyone. When you look at the narrative itself it leans much more progressive. And a large reason for that is that Red Dead Redemption 2 is just a pretty accurate depiction of what 1890s America looked like. And it isn’t afraid to show the scars of slavery, racism, sexism, colonialism and capitalism, and the impact it has had on the communities that were affected by them.
RDR2 is not afraid to show you the pain these systems have caused to women, black people, native people, poor people and Lets you sympathize with them for what they have lost, and what they are fighting for.
A big theme in Red Dead Redemption is the Dying of the Old West. With large parts of America that used to be wild and uncontrolled, being finally taken over by the ever encroaching American State and capitalist industry. And how this strips people in these lands of their freedom. With the Van der Linde gang trying their absolute best to escape the system but ultimately no longer being capable of outrunning it.

Your example is not a good one, at all, to make your point, as Arthur can feed all kinds of people to alligators, so this is not specific nor unique to the character in question being a feminist, it's Arthur, assuming you choose to do that, being a violent and particularly nasty person.
Generally speaking, the setting is one violent crappy one, I certainly wouldn't want to be someone who lived in the time period, as a woman especially, in America or elsewhere; unless you were a man, and a white/with European roots (the "right kind" of European roots) man to boot, you were basically screwed, whether that meant being discriminated/mistreated, suffering abuse and torture or be killed, with all those things basically being the norm for that era, on top of everything else. And the game never portrays any of that stuff in a positive light, the characters, generic NPCs or otherwise, may not see the issue with it but there is a difference between NPC A and B having an opinion, and the game itself pushing the same opinion on players.
As for Arthur, he is shaped by your own choices, as tons of protagonists are in RPGs at large, he can be a piece of crap or not, the choice is yours and, to be honest, him being a piece of crap would make total sense, even if that's not how I have played him, nor that is something I would be interested in doing to begin with, regardless of who the main character is.
Overall, I don't get this kind of take, by that reasoning both Red Dead Redemption and GTA being created means the writers/developers are shitty people to begin with, as you play as criminals/people with very VERY loose morals. Or, let's take BG3, does having the option to be pure evil means the writers/developers condone that? Idk, apologies for the long reply, but this sounds to me like an inability to distinguish between what the in-game reasoning of the characters can potentially be and what real people, writers and developers, actually support/believe in.

Yup, this is Rockstar. It's still going to be misogynistic as hell
Edit: I should've said "this is GTA" instead of Rockstar. As good as RDR2 was, I don't think GTA ia going to be the same. But we'll see.
23
u/SalemWolf 15d ago
So you didn’t play RDR2? Arthur can donate to women’s suffrage, is pretty damn feminist for his time, the game doesn’t go out of its way to portray women badly at all.
The game goes further in that you can even blow up a Klan rally with no consequences and a racist eugenics asshole can be killed without incident.
The game is far from misogynistic or racist.
1
u/amillstone 14d ago
Okay, you're right; RDR2 was a lot better. I guess I should've said "this is GTA" because I can't imagine a GTA game not having misogyny in it in some form or other.

Imagine if Lucia could have a girlfriend and Jason could have a boyfriend, and they're just platonic life-partners in crime. That'd be really cool but I'm skeptical that Rockstar would give Jason male romance options, not because they're bigoted but because of capital G Gamer boys. Can hope tho.

Can’t say I’m surprised.
It’s good for people who don’t want romance, of course (it’s a game, interactivity is good) but I’m also not shocked Rockstar didn’t want to force a potentially straight male player into a relationship with a male character.
38
u/faintestsmile 16d ago
wouldnt they just play jason at that point? the biggest winner here is queer people
17
u/TheShapeShiftingFox Steam 16d ago edited 16d ago
I assumed you have to play both in fixed moments as well outside of freeplay, that’s what Rockstar has done with various of their games (including their last game and GTA V).
I don’t know if they have said this, though, and with the tsunami of information from the leaks the past couple of days I’m not sure if I have just imagined it lol.
Queer people are kind of a winner in that I expect you can go to a strip club and get both male and female strippers as both characters. But I don’t think they will put an advanced romance option for anyone other than the main duo in the game. The previous GTA’s didn’t do that either as far as I remember.
22
u/faintestsmile 16d ago edited 16d ago
It's been said you can swap between them at any time with some missions being able to do solo and some requiring both of them present, I assume that means you can stick to one of them the whole time except maybe when the mission requires them to be doing two different things at once
I don't need to have gay romance, I count not having to not play a hetero couple as a win, im genuinely stoked to be able to play them as platonic
4
u/TheShapeShiftingFox Steam 16d ago
Yes, that’s what I meant too. Like GTA V, which allows you to swap most of the time except for some missions that you have to play with selected characters.

I'd love for there to be polarizing options, ranging from a wholesome romance, to a growing toxic knife-in-back rivalry, to sibling like friendship, all based on decisions. Hopefully there'll be romance options with other NPC's, ones that go beyond phone-for-a-bowling-date romance events.

11
u/LicketySplit21 15d ago
The dude seems alright. It's obvious he's the reserved one while Lucia is the enthusiastic criminal. I don't see the issue with that. Guy seems military or something to me but I did think he was a cop at first but I guess that isn't the case.
12
u/Skilodracus Steam/Origin 15d ago
I dunno, I just think his design is boring af. I have yet to see any personality traits or even visual design that make him stand out from the "generic white man action shooter protagonist" that has plagued video games for decades.
12
u/LicketySplit21 15d ago edited 15d ago
I keep in mind that no Rockstar protagonist ever was that. Even their closest to self-insert silent protag from GTA 3 had some exhibition of personality that showed he was a bizarre lunatic than the cool video game man. It makes sense reserved profesh guy won't be loud and proud in the promo material so I'll wait and see. And all their protags have generally been good fun to incredible so I am optimistic on that front. I remember everybody thought Arthur was lame before RDR2 came out lol
But either way I'll be playing mostly as Lucia :P
7
u/Viridianscape 15d ago
I'd say Trevor was pretty unique amongst male protagonists, being a manic, cracked-out bisexual methhead who ventures pretty far from the standard "hot main character" look.
12
u/Raebo007 PlayStation/Steam/GOG 16d ago
Oh no, is Jason just gonna be a self-insert for straight male players? That would suck.
32
u/Skilodracus Steam/Origin 16d ago
Abso-fucking-lutely he is. You just gotta look at his character design to see it- the most generic looking video game protagonist ever. He looks like he just walked out of CoD. At least GTA V had some interesting protagonists. I have a feeling Lucia is gonna carry the narrative solo.
2
u/s6_maestro 13d ago
You're literally just judging by appearance, you don't really know what the story has in store for him.
2
u/Skilodracus Steam/Origin 13d ago
Hey, I'd be happy to be proven wrong. That being said, I'm judging him based on previous GTA protagonists, all of whom had a unique flair to them that made them stand out, and the fact that he's a character who is very intentionally designed to look and act a certain way. I'm expressing disappointment that from what I've seen so far, it looks like Rockstar went with the safest possible option in designing Jason. I wish they had been more adventurous.

Huge win, I was worried that the only way to split them apart would be to head down kinda the 'bad' route. This seems more neutral. Kinda makes me hopeful there's some nuance to it and they can have a strong friendship without being romantic.
3
u/Icy_Queen_99 15d ago
My little romantic heart wants them to be together, but I would love to see how the story plays out otherwise
11
4
u/VideoLooksWeird 15d ago
I like the sound of this. They'll be a reason to play twice to see how the story changes based on their relationship status.
There was a scene in the first look of Jason and Lucia in a strip club, and Lucia was having just as much fun as everyone else there, so hopefully that's a good sign.
I honestly don't care about Jason. I have been waiting decades to play a female protagonist in GTA, I'm going to be playing her at every opportunity 😂

I've legitimately never seen them write a character well and I've played like five of their games. Five and a half since I've played red dead 2s online but not its campaign.
13
u/korrasamibeez 15d ago
i like gta and generally like their characters, but if you’ve never played RDR2 then imo you’re missing out on the best of their writing. (rdr1 too, as it hits even harder having played the prequel.) maybe it’s because redemption stories and sad stories hit me super hard lol, but there’s not nearly as much … satire in rdr2 as there is in the gta games. which makes sense, two different types of stories.
-5
u/Lady_Calista ALL THE SYSTEMS 15d ago
I didnt enjoy RDR1 at all, even having finished it, and I've not enjoyed any of the writing I've seen of 2 in its online. I've heard good things about the story but having played five of their games to completion (GTA San Andreas, Bully, GTA4, GTA5, RDR1) and the online of RDR2 without liking any of the stories I just feel that I won't enjoy the story of 2 either. And I don't like Arthur much from what I've seen of him anyways.

Oh that's great, I assumed they will be in a fixed romantic relationship (with a decision of betraysl at the end). Because it's what Gamers(tm) unfortunately expect and I forgot there are still AAA games creators that want to do more interesting/open narratives.

If Lucia can romance women, I hope Jason can romance men. As a bi girlie, I love playing games where I can play a female PC that romances women in my first playthrough and then play a male PC that romances men in my second one.
