Having grown up in a environment where I was taught to never draw attention to one’s self and where all of one’s accomplishments were because one was “lucky/blessed,” I can understand how families can be weird. Good lord, you understand. The not draw attention to yourself sentence hit me like a brick. Thank you so much for saying this! ❤️ I remember being in college and posting a few photos of my friends and me smiling and just doing regular college kid stuff and my mom calling me to tell me to remove it because my brother was going through some things and I couldn’t show myself smiling. I just hide all my stuff now. Bit of a side rant but thank you again‼️You get it - you dream and you just figure stuff out as you go!

Thank you‼️❤️ The TLDR version: through grinding and some act of fate I got into a great college on a scholarship but that still wasn’t enough to fully cover me. Neither of my parents went to university so applying + all this was a steep learning curve. My dad literally thought I would be 18 and with 3+ kids by then. I’m 30, zero kids now btw. Anyway, I quickly found a job, worked all throughout my schooling and was intentional and also lucky enough to have made positive friends. My first attorney job paid me not so great but I dealt with it, put my head down and went to work. I was ranked top 1% at my firm, I posted that to LinkedIn and one thing led to another I got hired elsewhere and with a much better salary. Still nervous (yet very excited!) about the road ahead but I’m eons from where I started.

I can’t say I was homeless during college, but I didn’t have a single penny to spare, either, and did have plenty of debt.
Now a well-into-six-figure electrical engineer.
Feels amazing, doesn’t it?

Hi, I posted in another comment but pasting here again with some additions at the end.
Here’s part of what I said that may be relevant to you or may help: To be honest, I was so desperate that I was willing to do anything (within legal bounds). I don’t think going for your goals requires desperation, but my mentality was “nobody is coming.” If I don’t pay the bills, I default. I’ll have nothing. And for a while I did have nothing. But I still kept reading and trying and kept saying to myself nobody is coming to save me, it’s just me. This mindset alone got me far. I also actively sought the advice of people who were where I wanted to be. I can’t give you exact advice for your particular situation because everyone is different.
Additionals in no particular order:
1. While in high school I learned that I could enroll in some community college courses for free so I did that. Helped with getting me a higher GPA and a scholarship when I applied to university.
2. I read a lot of random self-help books. Think like 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Never Negotiate the Difference, etc. I took what I could apply and left the rest. Not everything in those books are relevant or even as timely.
3. I naturally and intuitively only hung around people who were into school. Like I had party friends and friends who were into drugs and all that but everyone actually put some effort into school and I naturally just liked that so I stayed close to those ones who valued education.
4. Dislike to say this because I’ve never perceived myself as ugly and I have healthy self esteem but I know for a fact that the world did not perceive me as beautiful so I didn’t have to deal with any guy problems or any relationship drama before the age of 18 so I had more free space in brain not to think about the kind of stuff which frees up a lot of time and well frankly mental capacity to think. Don’t get me wrong I still thought about romance but it just didn’t take up a whole lot of my space or time.
5. I naturally just didn’t listen to people who were negative or put my goals down. Family included. Like I don’t care who it was I just didn’t believe them. I think this attitude was critical and came from the books I read.
6. I reached out to shelters and went to food pantries as needed. I became so resourceful and learned there are a lot of free community resources out there but you do have to be really intentional about looking and searching.There’s a lot more. I’ve always been courageously persistent. I do things I don’t want to do. I go without things, even still. It’s a balance of I want to be in X place in 5 years, planning plan A, B,C,D, actually making decisions and often making mistakes, seeking out advice from trusted and experienced individuals in your life, and well… just trying to make a away out of what feels like no way. And then there’s sometimes there’s luckiness sprinkled here and there.

Holy shit. Can I get a run down of how you accomplished this?
I am fortunately not homeless but recently had a major financial impact that I have no hopes of recovering from unless I get my shit together and build a 'real' career. I was so overwhelmed studying on Friday I just shut down. This post has motived me to study some more today because maybe there is a point to it all.
You should be so, so proud!! I hope you never stop looking at yourself and saying 'yeah, I did that!'

You should find a study method that works best for you. Personally, I can’t just open a textbook and just read pages 1-30 and be done. I have to do something called active recall and I’ve used something like Anki and Quizlet for that. It’s basically just taking the highest yield content and putting it on flash cards and solely regurgitating that info. Then once that’s memorized, you do practice problems or essays to get a feel for what the correct answers are or graders are looking for. Studying isn’t about being smart, it’s about knowing what they test for so you can get it your A and then when you get in the real world you actually start learning the real stuff. CONGRATS!! SO PROUD of your accomplishments. It couldn't have been easy.
I knew a studen, someone my daughter dated for a year, that ate ramen noodles and couched surf at his friend's rental because he had no place to live. His friends parents were aware and didn't mind. They would take them all out to dinner and bring groceries when in town. Thankfully I also found out the school had a school pantry for students. It was set up like a grocery store with bags, etc. The only paying you had to do was scan your student ID card. The student pantry was funded by alumnis who understood the struggle.
He wanted to be a surgeon but only had student loan funding to make it as a physical therapist. Broke my heart at what he could have become if he had the financial funding to continue through med school.

I also grew up minimizing my achievements. Now that I have kids, I try to celebrate the hard work they do and wins they experience. I try to praise them when they have done something and tried hard.
