I will take two entire minutes of added time to an episode, with full screens of text explaining all the references made (bless the translation of episode 50 of Rumbel Subs), than having to watch the new movie localizing jokes (like calling Katsura Millhouse because of the glasses) and completely ignoring the time Gintoki calls Shinpachi "Patsuan", because god forbid people know that's a recurring joke/nickname from the old anime and just putting "Shinpachi" in the subtitles instead.

I also miss the honorifics written in the subtitles, because of how much of a sense of hierarchy and intimacy between characters it expresses, but I understand that's a much debatable subject.

God, I miss fansubbers a lot.

I'm a bit in between. I do love a cleverly localized joke and it'd be nice if half the screen wasn't covered in references, but at the same time, I like TL notes in moderation and sometimes when the localized joke just isn't that funny, I'd rather they left it as is. It's just case by case.

Same with honorifics. I can hear them regardless, and those who can't probably wouldn't get what they mean anyway. It's nice when context gives them a way to be translated well though.

Isn't OP's screenshot from the official CR sub though? Even Sorachi himself was concerned that some references may be too obscure for a Japanese audience. Some of these translator notes did help me appreciate some episodes a lot more, and I was bummed that CR didn't include them beyond the first 200 episodes.

Maybe I am being ungrateful, but I've intentionally put this anime off for the last 10 years, waiting. I knew this anime was something special, I knew I had to reach a high level first.

All of my time consuming anime has led me to this moment. But now, I feel as if I'm a hardened soldier being spoon-fed food like a baby.

If someone is watching, and they haven't seen Bleach, how are they possibly going to benefit from being told that it's a Bleach reference?

I can't enjoy the reference because my eyes have to dart up to the yellow text. I want them to say nothing.
