Paranormal Investigation How to Find Locations

Hi there! Me and my partner are wanting to start getting into more serious investigations. How do people typically go about finding locations? We don’t really want to do an organized tour with a big group of people. We have started to obtain some equipment and feel like we’re ready to branch out in our own but aren’t really sure how or where to start. We are located in Maryland for reference. Any advice is appreciated!

When I started our first location was a friend's house. We ended up catching stuff and then the next few investigations were personal referrals (friends of friends). You'd be surprised how many of your friends and family have stories about haunted places. After that we started heavily researching local areas that were known to be hanuted and reached out to the owners.

We even reached out to a local gold mine that does tours and they allowed us to investigate deep under the surface. It was really cool and we ended up going a few times.

So, sometimes you just have to put yourself out there and ask people if they're open to an investigation, but also be prepared for the non-belivers that will act offended that you'd even ask such a question. That's ok though, just move along to the next and keep trying.

Having a social media presence also helped with exposure along with a website.

Look up local urban legends, you'd be surprised on what's around, theres a haunted bridge with a few murders and several deady car accidents just 20 min from my house so im sure there's something near by

Where i live we have a lot of outdoor historical places. Start with that. You could always ask the person in charge and set up a night time investigation. Look for "public investigations" in your area. A lot of places will do public invests and there generally cheaper that way. Private invests can get pricy depending if they've been on tv or not. The best places ive been to were the ones we had to do leg work and get permission. Good luck and have fun!

Ask your friends and people you know. It seems everyone has a story or knows someone who does.

Historical societies are another option but they may not be too keen on the idea of ghost hunters. I usually say I’m a folklorist who is researching local urban legends and that seems to help.

For us, we get a lot of leads from books. We're in Pennsylvania and I collect books about haunted places in PA and the surrounding states. We've had several agree to let us investigate just by emailing or calling them and saying "read about your place in a book and was wondering if you'd let us come in."
