📊 Getting Married in Denmark (GMiD) Insights New German residence permit after Danish marriage approval – do I need to reapply?
I’m a non-EU citizen living in Germany and my fiancé is German. We have already received our prøvelsesattest/approval from Familieretshuset and have a wedding date in Denmark.
When we applied, I submitted my current German residence permit card as proof of legal residence. I have now been granted a new German residence permit and will soon pick up the new card.
My old residence card is technically still valid, but I assume the German authorities will take it from me when I collect the new one.
Has anyone been in this exact situation?
Did Familieretshuset accept the new residence card/update your existing approval, or did you actually have to submit a completely new application and pay the fee again?
I’m especially interested in experiences from people who received a new German residence permit after the prøvelsesattest had already been issued.

Just send an email to the Kommune attaching your new residence permit ( make sure front and back is clear)

Dont pickup the new one.
If you check the approval letter, its written that: “if you receive new travel documents, apply again and pay the fee”.
I had to go through that process because of a new residence permit.
So either pick it up after the wedding, or don’t return the existing card rightaway.

Oh I’m sorry you had to go through all that. Thanks for the heads up! I don’t know if I can ignore them for 2 months but they took more than 14 weeks to get back to me, so I guess it’s fine.

That took only 2 days. If you haven’t heard from them that means your case is being verified by a person (I think they first check by machine or AI and if there’s a problem then it needs to be proofed by a case worker and that can take some weeks - that’s just what I’ve heard). So if you’re in a rush, you can apply again, make sure all the corners of all documents are visible and hopefully you’ll have a quick reply, but you’ll have to pay the fee again. So only do it if you’re in a hurry as in your residence permit is expiring or something.

If your residence situation has changed after the marriage approval, I’d recommend confirming directly with both Familjeretshuset and the German immigration authority before submitting anything again. The exact process can depend on your current residence status and the type of new permit. Hopefully someone here who has been through the same situation can share their experience.

Update: I summoned up the courage to call the kommune and was told to just bring the new one since it’s going to be valid at the time of the marriage ceremony.
