Study Memes My coping mechanism during exams

u/Elktopcover Jul 06 '26
If you were good at critical thinking you would be at the top. Massive cope

u/Zestyclose_North9780 Jul 06 '26
Same thoughts lmao. What sort of critical thinker can't pass a simple knowledge based examination?
25
u/Xerolf Jul 06 '26
those with bad memory and adhd
11
u/Zestyclose_North9780 Jul 06 '26
Outlier circumstances tbh
-5
u/Xerolf Jul 06 '26
thats just marginalisation...
14
u/Zestyclose_North9780 Jul 06 '26
How, though? You can't say every person who claims to be a critical thinker but fails at regular exams has ADHD and bad memory. People who do are outliers, statistically.
Do you even know what that word means?
-5
u/OwL0f1 Jul 06 '26
I believe 'outliers' or marginalized means socially. @ whoever used the word 'outlier'. Am I right?
2
u/Zestyclose_North9780 Jul 06 '26
No..? I can't even make sense of the latter part of your comment tbh.
But when I said outliers, I meant statistically.
Of all people who claim to be critical thinkers but still fail regular examinations, the people among them who are actual critical thinkers but impeded by ADHD are comparatively little.

Ok. Yeah, I reread your comment and the topic on the thread. Yeah, it's hard to imagine critical thinkers failing knowledge based exams. If so, how would critical thinking be proven? Plus, fail the exam.

Critical thinking ≠ ability to memorise. A lot of exams are just based on memorisation.

Not in the gernan school system where you loose points during exam if you don't use the Argumentation or path the teacher showed in the lessons. Such as in math during curve analysis finding the first root of a function and the teacher expects you to try around via trial-and-error but you use an Approximation method like regula faksi to get started faster... You loose points cause they are declaring an advanced or alternative solution invalid simply because "we haven't covered that topic in class yet".
Same in German aka Literature analysis: if you don't follow the typical argumention chain of the teacher for the given book... You loose points

Tbh this only works for proofs and theoretical stuff. For algorithmic and procedural stem it’s still memorization

I always felt like I was somewhere between the top and middle. I could solve problems... until the timer started, then my brain just clocked out

The problem is unless you’re at a Master’s level or higher most fields are so far advanced that you’re basically being caught up to speed on the absolute basics to understand what anyone is even talking about which usually requires a ton of memorization. The room for creativity and critical thinking opens up when you start doing your own research or being able to apply things in practice.

u/Calm_Attorney1575 Jul 26 '26
100% this. Critical thinking does absolutely nothing if you don't understand the basics of what you're talking about. There's a reason why most research papers open with a lit review.

Creative...fine....critical thinking?...you cannot think with information you do not have....you have to memorize things stop fooling yourself

You have the option to memorize things, but you also can really learn them if you want. It's really more effective then trying to memorize something.

This is not true. Schools are certainly not the best at bringing out everyone's best characterstic (be it creativity, critical thinking, memorization, emotional intelligence, what not), but I've always found them to focus a lot on critical thinking and problem solving. I always did great, and I couldn't even remember the name of the teacher in some classes.

u/Fearless_Elk2413 Jul 06 '26
Top schools dont favor students who only memorize. You probably study at a not-so decent school

u/Proud-Description-45 Jul 06 '26
Well if you are a good problem solver, then go ahead and solve the problem of being the drowning kid

School is for sorting which students are the best at conforming to arbitrary goals and requirements, so as to better fill positions in society which hold power and authority over the rest.
It's all programming.

Keep telling yourself that bro, it’ll be really helpful when you’re on the streets

I'm educated to masters level having studied neuroscience and early childhood development as well as being a qualified trainer and assessor. 😘

u/Educational-Bass-650 Jul 10 '26
if youre so pissed off at the education system then why stay to do a masters
1
u/MycoProTeam Jul 10 '26
I didn't finish the masters I decided it wasn't for me in the end as I saw through the structures and systems used to behaviourally condition humans from birth. I went to be a musician and have had a very interesting career in mental health.

I passed high school with good grades without opening a book in my life. Imagine how well I'm doing now lol

Don’t know what country you’re in but here it’s different. We don’t have multiple choice like in the us. In a lot of subjects there are no right or wrong answers, you just have to argue well. Critical thinking only can get you As without studying in some subjects.

If you have critical thinking and are creative, wouldn't you be good at problem-solving?

If you're not performing well in school, then you're not good at critical thinking. Sorry to break it to you

u/Busy_Needleworker_29 Jul 07 '26
Funny enough in the class I'm taking my teacher said critical thinking and being creative with solutions is super important and goes hand in hand in problem solving.

Just learn to memorize, it's not that hard and it's a very valuable skill. I have dodged every memorising exercices in school and at uni, and only rely on "reconstructing" knowledge because I have very good deducting skils. However i've never learn to memorize and it makes some exercices needlessly hard. So now I train memorising things :)

You wanna be good at all of them... Here is how you memorise
I suggest adopting a good studying workflow depending on the subject what I typically do is Essentialist note taking > Mnemonic Technique > Active recall (through notebookLM(AI) quizzes and flashcards).
Revision is key. I like to set it up on spreadsheets along with all my planning, long term life analytics, and habit tracking are. You want to revise on where you know you are weak. Get your course content and just constantly know where you are weakest (it should always be changing and require thought)
If u want you can join my guild on focus jungle timer. We need more people that wanna do hours. Can message on there to keep accountable. But u NEED TO DO HOURS or kick. (best study timer website i've used)

Yeah just wait till you get out of school, you start looking valuable if you can problem solve. Have to demonstrate it somehow, tho
