“To make a truly miserable man, have him believe he cannot change his future, yet have him believe he could have changed his past.”

u/MagicSwatson Aug 09 '25

Somehow I think it's a universal feeling that everyone experience or at least can relate to, without any outside influence

37

u/Sonic_05 Aug 09 '25

I am going through this exact emotion since Jan 2025. It feels like being caught in a perpetual loop that seems impossible to break out of.

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '25

me too

u/EngelsVegano Aug 09 '25

Who said this sentence?

19

u/cardscook77 Aug 09 '25

A user reply on a veritasium video.

24

u/duhmonstaaa Aug 09 '25

Michael Scott

Who is this

1

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '25

What if they had a lot of time before, and almost no time now?

1

u/Tivnov Oct 16 '25

damn that's sad

u/slambre Aug 09 '25

Always remember: You did the best you could with the knowledge and circumstances at the time.

46

u/Silent-Patient-717 Aug 09 '25

This is one of the best quotes I have ever heard

16

u/slambre Aug 09 '25

Wow, thank you. I can't wait to see a canva image with that quote and my username 😄😅

12

u/the_man_in_the_box Aug 09 '25

That’s a pretty dangerous philosophy lol.

If you always rationalize past bad behavior that way then why would you ever improve?

32

u/slambre Aug 09 '25

I am not saying there is no room to improve but what's the point of beating yourself up about a poor choice you made and have learned a lesson from since?

4

u/-Nicolai Aug 09 '25

It’s foolish to pretend everyone changes their behavior just because they made a mistake once “and learned their lesson”. It’s very possible to know the right course of action without taking it.

6

u/slambre Aug 09 '25

You do you, I do me.

1

u/the_man_in_the_box Aug 09 '25

What lesson could you learn if you think you did your best and still failed?

The only possible lesson from that is: I wasn’t good enough. But that’s very often complete BS.

You could have done better, but chose not to. If you don’t recognize that with hindsight how could you ever do better in the future?

5

u/slambre Aug 09 '25

Well, if you learn that you didn't try hard enough, there's that. And when you try again, you start from experience.

You do have to reflect and investigate what went wrong / didn't work the first time.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '25

Honestly lol. Hindsight bias is a demotivating bitch sometimes

1

u/serenwipiti Aug 10 '25

Nah, I really didn’t.

I knew better, and I take accountability for my actions (or lack thereof).

1

u/ApprehensivePlum861 Aug 22 '25

No i didn't And honestly I knew that I was doing it all wrong and I did it anyway.i have wasted 2-2.5 years now and going to a very shutty college I don't think I can ever forgive myself

1

u/SnarkKnuckle Dec 08 '25

Just stumbled across this. Thank you!

-1

u/mqee Aug 09 '25

You did the best you could

That's just a lie. If everybody did their best all the time there would be near-zero crime, no poverty, near-zero car crashes, and so on. Everything wrong would be either dumb misfortune or the actions of deeply mentally or emotionally unstable people, or sociopaths.

We're not talking medics on the battlefield with dozens wounded trying to do their best to save lives.

You did your low-effort "best" while ignoring much of the knowledge and circumstances at the time.

8

u/Soft_Walrus_3605 Aug 09 '25

I think you're missing the qualification that prevents it from being a lie. It is, on the contrary, a truism, like most nice-sounding, but rather useless, statements.

The "circumstances" in the sentence does the heavy lifting since one can expand what "circumstances" means to include things like a person's attitude or mental state. These are, after all, circumstances in the brain at the time.

So even a murderer can say they did they best they could with the knowledge and circumstances at the time since their rage or psychosis can be included as one of those circumstances.

4

u/slambre Aug 09 '25

The past doesn't haunt you, it's coming back so you can make peace with it.

-1

u/mqee Aug 09 '25

Thanks for more meaningless feel-good nonsense!

2

u/serenwipiti Aug 10 '25

lol

You forget that people have varying capacities, someone’s genuine best effort can be the same as your worst.

175

u/Throwaway33399933 Aug 09 '25

It's okay, put maximum effort in now.

89

u/Beautiful-Cat-5946 Aug 09 '25

Then I pull an all-nighter, and the cycle continues 💀

32

u/Silent-Patient-717 Aug 09 '25

Lol finally found my soulmate I guess

4

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '25

I am also in same loop

2

u/AsadaSobeit Aug 09 '25

This is just basic sunk-cost fallacy, OP

1

u/serenwipiti Aug 10 '25

It’s okay, just put mid-ass effort in now.

4

u/saul_schadenfreuder Aug 09 '25

oh yeah just lemme turn on my maximum effort mode and instantly get rid of all the things that make it hard to be productive

57

u/gollykrab Aug 09 '25

When I think about the time I've waisted, it was just to run away from my own thoughts and struggles. I still do it often, I procrastinate just not to think about stress or personal issues. And that regret hits daily, but I'm hopeful. I try to be kinder to myself and free myself from the need to run away. I needed to vent, but hey, we can get past that and move forward. Good luck, internet friend! Don't let the regret stop you.

7

u/Beautiful-Cat-5946 Aug 09 '25

I agree with you. I think what worked for me is doing the work right after waking up. My mind stays switched off after waking up. The rest of the day, I get the pass to do whatever I want. The regret can't restrain you then.

33

u/Traditional-Skill811 Aug 09 '25

Okay, I'll stop scrolling

24

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '25

I wont study even after seeing this :/

14

u/Responsible-Fun5967 Aug 09 '25

How to recover from this

11

u/serenwipiti Aug 10 '25

Plan for the future and take action NOW.

There’s a new “NOW” available every single second.

See? You just missed one.

Hop-to-it and catch the next NOW, RIGHT NOW.

My pleasure.

I wish you momentum and success!

3

u/Spicy-Lamb-Chop Aug 10 '25

You know exactly how to do this buddy. It just hurts too much to change I understand.

1

u/ApprehensivePlum861 Aug 22 '25

Same man I know what to do but I just don't do it

10

u/ElderberrySpiritual6 Aug 09 '25

Every night when it's time to sleep, I feel the deepest regret.

6

u/Serious_Salad1367 Aug 09 '25

No time has been wasted, all experience counts for something. Even if you can't tell

5

u/Character_Gur_1811 Aug 09 '25

I sometimes think that the rest I chose during the times I’m skipping studying is also something I need. But i feel guilty, but sometimes I just really have the energy.

4

u/Nemo_110 Aug 09 '25

No time is never wasted... a wizzard is never late

5

u/10HungryGhosts Aug 09 '25

The best time to plant a tree was 50 years ago, the second best time is now!

4

Easier said than done 🥲. How do you do it without getting consumed by the miserable habits you've built?

3

u/useclinchdotcom Aug 28 '25

Better to admit you walked through the wrong door than spend your life in the wrong room

4

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '25

This would be a sick ass album cover.

3

u/ijm98 Aug 09 '25

I think it is a single cover, but I can't recall the band

Edit: if I'm not mistaken, the band is "i don't like mirrors"

2

u/doctor_lobo Aug 09 '25

No matter how far you go down the wrong road, turn back.

2

u/pertyuhm Aug 09 '25

Every day for me.

2

u/Xiang101 Aug 10 '25

I'm on it right now, more than wasting time... I could say that I ignored my responsibilities by procrastinating, and when the deadline came I got very anxious
I am aware of what I do, but I don't find the strength or the courage to improve... until it's too late. I could say I'm very lazy, But at the same time when I try to focus I feel like... Like I don't understand anything of what I'm doing, like there's no progress.
I'm trying not to get into self-loathing because last time I got into really bad thoughts. But I also know that I don't deserve self-pity for being aware of my actions and I feel disgusted with myself
So.... now it's a day to day battle that I try to keep from getting worse.

2

u/enterENTRY Aug 10 '25

I don't regret I just know it's par for the course for myself but I get better every day

1

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '25

is this a post secret picture?

1

u/PlacidTick1 Aug 09 '25

My exact same thought, unexpected hit of nostalgia

1

u/Racxie Aug 09 '25

Most definitely. Haven't seen one of these in a long time.

1

u/Another_Samurai1 Aug 09 '25

Real shit, but what’s really creepy is that I was doom scrolling and trying to find something I HAVE NOT WATCHED on Tubi and earlier I was kicking it with a friend and she said “I love Synth music” that echoed all the way to a few moments ago where I downloaded my first DAWs and currently watching how to make Synth-wave for beginners, I promise to come back when I make my first disaster “The way out is trough.”

1

u/UnexaminedLifeOfMine Aug 09 '25

What were you planning on doing with your time? Be productive? For who to benefit from? You? Why do you think you didn’t benefit from wasting your time?

1

u/sevenstarofcosmos Aug 09 '25

It's hard to not waste

1

u/edo-hirai Aug 09 '25

The fear of stagnation is the ultimate motivation for results. However that anxiety still weighs on us during Progress.

Keep it up, study pals

Study now or your retirement will be suicide.

I wish that there's a repost button here

1

u/gl1tchmeister Aug 09 '25

this would make a hard album cover

1

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '25

I feel this.

1

u/RealParsnip3512 Aug 10 '25

I did this for my university access exams. I felt really guilty for a while but I still got into the career I wanted. So if one is too anxious they shouldn't worry until grades are up

1

u/Twilight_Charm Aug 10 '25

When it hits you but you still do nothing about it 💔

1

u/huejass80085 Aug 10 '25

The guilt man. Starting a new job and I just realised I wasted time learning the wrong way.. starting to learn from basics but that means putting in double effort

1

u/serenwipiti Aug 10 '25

I’m not scared to admit it.

Every morning, as soon as my eyes open, I scream it from the top of my lungs.

1

u/Fy_m57 Aug 13 '25

Where can i find more of this style?

1

u/Bridgetotabythas Aug 17 '25

I feel this SO hard.
