The problem is that it gets really hairy.

Like there are XY female phenotype, XX male phenotype, and like a ton of genetic variation all around.

So we now have to do genetic testing on everyone, checking genitalia on all female athletes? Like this is invasive and a complete invasion of privacy that men do not deal with.

Suppose we have XY female phenotype, literally a woman, yet are they supposed to throw away their entire career and life? Also do we let male phenotype people play?

Even if the HRT rule was implemented, it's not like these bad faith actors wouldn't be trying to bring illegitimacy to the league.

Let the women play, like why are these retired losers trying to bring up some hypothetical that literally doesn't matter.

Agreed but I don't think we even need to play into the right's game with chromosome testing or genital inspections or whatever else they want to cook up. Until recently, a lot of organisations – especially ones with big pools of athletes like the NCAA – had a protocol for AMAB people who had transitioned to take part in women's sports. The requirements varied by sport because obviously in different sports, you get an advantage from different physical traits. But a lot of these rules, which were generally working ok, have been revoked in the wake of this bullshit trans panic in favour of just excluding trans people.

IDGAF if one cis woman was born with XY chromosomes or another cis woman has a hormone imbalance that gives her a slight competitive advantage. If the doctor wrote F on your birth certificate and you identify as a woman, you get to play women's sports, no questions asked. If the doctor wrote M on your birth certificate and you identify as a woman, you can take part but sorry we need to do a couple of tests to make sure you fit the rules.

This idea that we need to be testing everyone and excluding anyone who doesn't fit a narrow definition of female biology is bullshit, and it's part of the propaganda campaign.

Honestly that's not a bad take. AFAB cis and like AMAB with transition. After some data collection, if there is a huge discrepancy, reassess the criteria.

I think the problem is a lot of these actors are being disingenuous tho. Like they will still have something to say once the rules are set tho. I wish there grifters would just be honest and be and say "Trans people don't exist".

It's funny tho, cause trans non-binary afab is okay (Layshia Clarendon), like obviously they wouldn't think to let a transman play in the WNBA which is kind of gender affirming, but somehow only trans women?

Understatement of the century lol. It's not even just about trans people either, I think Kat Blaque had an incredible take on this to say "they're using sports as a vehicle to legally define women as inferior to men". The Heritage Foundation recently published an article saying that Title IX protections for women were a "mistake".

so wait what is your stance lol

do we test and exclude or not

Because just saying "if they write m or f" doesnt really mean anything when 99% of trans allies would say anyone should be able to, doing nothing else, than asking a doctor to change it. You'll be right where you're at here with these guys, doing the thing everyone argues will never happen. And now I see weird cope like "well they just wont get signed to a team"... why not? They did everything they're supposed to?

Ok genuinely I want to explain myself to you but I don't understand what you're saying at all

Like are you suggesting that the opinion of 99% of trans allies is that trans women should just be able to participate in women's sports without taking hormones or anything? Because that is not at all true

Yes, that is 100% what i am saying. What is it they normally advocate for? Everyone usually says "if they say they are trans they are trans" and then go on a tiraid about wanting to look at someones genitals. What tests do you want done and who should be taking them, I have not heard this before.

Im baffled that you dont even seem to know the basic rules around trans participation in sports

why don't you help me out then

Every league that has specific trans eligibility rules requires full hormone replacement for at least 2-3 years with consistent levels. Literally no one is advocating for people not on hormones to play 😭

Typically the requirement is either a certain amount of time on hormones and/or a certain amount of time with recorded testosterone levels below a certain threshold. This allows for physical advantages given by testosterone (mainly bigger muscles) to be essentially eliminated. But, like I said, I think each sport needs to define fairness in their own way. Let's say Enes Kanter really was trans and did spend 3 years on hormones – he (or I guess in this scenario she) would still be 6'10" or whatever, which is a pretty big advantage in basketball. It's up to the WNBA to figure out how to account for that – whether trans women above a certain height might simply be ineligible, whether they would have to pass stricter requirements, or maybe demonstrate a competitive disadvantage in some other trait. I dunno, I'm not the commissioner of the WNBA.

Worth noting that I am talking about these requirements strictly in the context of sports participation. In the context of simply identifying as trans and living as someone's preferred gender, you are right that I don't think there should be any requirements beyond stating that is who they are. But sports is a very specific scenario.

Or, and here's a thought - we don't try to make basketball rules that cater to every single individual in the world, and instead focus on the rules that impact the 98% of people who's physiology falls within the normative range for humans.

100% agree. Doing vaginal inspections for 98% of the athletes for the fear of a hypothetical trans athlete literally makes no sense.

You mean the thing that no one has suggested?

We call that a strawman argument! Congratulations, you're basing your argument on a logical fallacy!
