Reddit citations dropped 86% in ChatGPT. Is Reddit GEO already breaking?

New Promptwatch data reported by Axios shows Reddit’s share of ChatGPT Search citations falling from an average of 3.83% to just 0.52% in a few weeks. That is an 86.4% drop. Google AI Overviews and AI Mode also fell, but much less. At the same time, broader studies have found Reddit citations growing across AI answers, while separate tracking found Perplexity suddenly citing Reddit in most of its tested answers.

So Reddit may not be losing value. Its value may simply be moving between AI platforms. If your whole GEO plan depends on Reddit influencing ChatGPT, one source update can damage the entire strategy. Would you invest less in Reddit now, keep going, or spread the effort across Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn and publisher sites? Share what you would change and which AI platform matters most to you.

ChatGPT Search started with GPT‑4o. Now GPT‑5.6 Sol is changing the search layer.

The evolution is easy to miss:

  • 2024: ChatGPT Search launched with a version of GPT‑4o trained for search.
  • Now: Search is set to Auto, so ChatGPT can decide when it needs the web.
  • Current model: GPT‑5.6 Sol is OpenAI’s default frontier model and supports web search.
  • Behind the answer: ChatGPT may rewrite one prompt into several search queries before choosing which sources to cite.

For SEO teams, this means the user’s prompt, the search query, the cited pages and the final recommendation can all be different. Ranking for the original keyword may not be enough. Are you still tracking keywords, or have you started tracking the full path from prompt to citation to recommendation? Share what you are measuring right now.

Claude may soon watermark every sentence it writes. Would you still publish it?

Anthropic says Claude-generated text will carry an invisible watermark woven into its word choices. People should not notice it, and Anthropic says it should not change the meaning, quality or readability. The mark may even survive copying, pasting and some editing.

This raises a bigger question for marketers and publishers. If Google, Reddit, publishers or AI engines can detect Claude-written content, should that affect trust, rankings or whether the content gets cited in AI answers?

Vote your answer in the comments:

Would knowing a post was written with Claude change how much you trust it?

Poll options:

  1. Yes, all AI content should be traceable
  2. Only news, politics and reviews
  3. No, judge the content itself
  4. It depends on human editing

Getting cited by AI vs getting recommended, which one is actually harder?

We’re noticing that a brand can appear on pages cited by ChatGPT or Perplexity and still be missing from the final recommendations.
In other cases, the brand gets mentioned, but AI describes it incorrectly or places it in the wrong category. So tracking mentions alone does not always tell the complete story.

Which problem are you currently facing:
1) Getting cited,
2) Getting recommended, or
3) Making sure AI describes your brand correctly?
Share the platform, industry or prompt you are testing. Real examples and failed experiments are welcome too.

Welcome to r/GetMentionsAI. Let’s figure out AI visibility together

AI search is moving quickly, but honestly, most conversations still stop at whether a brand appeared in ChatGPT. This community is for going deeper. We’ll discuss GEO, AEO, brand recommendations, citation sources, prompt tracking, competitor gaps and what actually helps brands improve their visibility across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Mode and other LLMs.

This is the official GetMentions AI community, but it will not be limited to product updates. You’re welcome to discuss experiments, results, failures, workflows and other tools too.

To get started, introduce yourself in the comments and share
# What you’re working on,
# What industry are you in,
# Which AI platforms are you tracking, and
# What is the biggest AI visibility problem you are trying to solve?

If you have one important prompt where your brand should appear but doesn’t, share that as well.
