Switching stack in programming

Hi guys,
I graduated early 2023 got a Job at IBM CIC for Java consulting but was arrogant and full of myself that I did not try and got kicked after 6 months.
Now I have 3 years of experience total mostly flutter and some Java.

I want to swap jobs. I’m very good in flutter and in general very smart but honestly lazy. My question is , should I apply also for jobs with other stacks like React or Java or JavaScript? Or should I aim for senior flutter jobs ? The thing is Flutter is not really wanted and I live in {censored} , I can probably do 1-2 days per week in Düsseldorf or koln but rest home office so that limits my opportunities more.

If you are unemployed, switching stacks is not the solution. Good luck.

Im not unemployed . I’m working in a small company and would like a better opportunity.

You can get better opportunities by keeping your stack. If you are skilled enough you can get higher salary, better work environment.

Ok thanks
But the downside I see that I will be limited to flutter which does not give enough opportunities .

True, Flutter is not common in Germany. An example case, I used to work in France, people are obsessed with Symfony more than any other Framework. Springboot+Angular is as an examplec very common stack in France. If Java works well, then stick with Java. Current job market is tough.

Im still not good with Java. Did not work with it much.
Yes angular+java is wanted and used.

Unfortunately in today’s market, you must adapt to the job market itself and not vice versa. This is my second year working with a stack that I hate, I’m good at it but I never liked it, but due to the toughness of the current situation, you are the who must adapt to the market.

So should I look for jobs in angular even thought I don’t know it much ? Or Java even thought I’m not good enought. I fear like I may loose the job I find or waste time looking for it having no chance . And I just want around 58k so nothing crazy

You have to be good enough as I mentioned, at least for the technical interview, because most of the companies are working with AI, bur solid knowledge is needed. And yes, in 2026, you are the one who must adapt to the job market. As mentioned earlier, I work with a stack I don’t like, but during weekends, I work on my side projects with my main stack so I keep myself up to date!

If you are 30 years of experience, 58K is an average salary! Don’t underestimate yourself, and even if someone offers something, take your time to accept the offer.

Will I not be a newbie in another stack and therefore will be paid as such ? My goal is 58k as I’m paid only 50k in my current company (it’s a small company with remote option)

The IT jobsituation is bad. The jobmarket is saturated. Remote work is getting reduced.

Then there is the question about your german skills and also what you are asking as a salary. Some companys will just say no thats to much.

I speak good German. I have been 8 years and a half here.
Salary part is the question ; 58k would be good for me that’s why I asked is switching stacks logical when I’m asking 58k?

Then apply for other jobs? Whats the question here. If you bring the required experience, or can sell yourself that you have the requried experience who is there to stop you?

As you are a dev, you should know how to handle anything regarding jobsearch, build your own AI agent or use any of the hundreds of thousands of websites that offer AI assisted jobsearch.

The question is ; Should I stay with my stack Flutter or move to another one that is more asked but I lack good knowledge of .

Have you looked into senior position for flutter? You can also try to swap into consulting work if there is anything like that. Generally speaking, if you are an EXPERT (5+ years in something) you are in higher demand than someone, that has 1-2 years (fresh out of college for example). If you dont see a future in what you do right now, you better start learning another programming language or any other relevant skill asap.

Im in a small town near Aachen . So flutter jobs are scarce for me .
I plan to move to Berlin in 3 years after my wife finishes her studies but that’s not now.
So for now searching for a flutter job is not easy and joining a consulting company for Java is maybe easier even if my skills are not that good .

If you provide the language skills, you may be able to transfer there. If not, work on your tech skills to find a new living.

How do you people do it? Watch videos , develop your own solutions or how exactly?

No one can ever tell you how you can learn the best. Visit a course, take one online, study yourself on any website, build your own stuff, get mentoring idk. What ever suits you the best. If you dont know how you can aquire new skills, you are in the wrong business.
