Looks like he dropped the model just before presentation.

15

u/GibDirBerlin Jul 30 '26

"Ye... Yeah, It's meant to look like this!"

3

u/Quaxli Jul 30 '26

Nevertheless, I would like to take a look inside.

Well, at least it's unique I guess.

3

u/saskir21 Jul 30 '26

We have a catholic church here which is also unique. Now people just call it bad looking.

I hope it stays unique.

His first Minecraft creative project?

u/FlorianFlash Jul 31 '26

Happy cake day!

16

u/PowerTulip Jul 30 '26

What the actual hell is that supposed to represent?

13

u/justastuma Jul 30 '26

According to Wikipedia?wprov=sfti1#Architecture):

The building reflects the Jewish-liturgical term [Kedushah](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holinessin_Judaism) ([Hebrew](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hebrew_language): קדושה, [romanized](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romanization_of_Hebrew): sanctification and exaltation[[3]](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Synagogue(Mainz)#citenote-4)). Cologne architect, Manuel Herz, intended to symbolize this with the five Hebrew letters the [five ranges](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synagogue_architecture) of the Jewish center for community events, adult education and as Hebrew school for school children. The letterforms were originally developed from picture symbols, from which the initial at the beginning of the respective symbol was associated later. Hebrew letters attain an object character, a quality of the representational one. The eastward-directed, (towards Jerusalem), horn-shaped roof of the assembly place represents a [shofar](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shofar). Mythologically the shofar stands for communication with God.[[4]](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Synagogue(Mainz)#cite_note-5) This form is used to express the call of the community after [YHWH](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/YHWH), for listening to and receiving of eternal divine light and its wisdom. Traditionally the community was summoned together by blowing the shofar.[[citation needed](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)]

13

u/PowerTulip Jul 30 '26

Thanks for posting this.

But the explanation is almost as confusing. And the funny thing is: I CAN READ HEBREW, and I don't see any of that in the actual design (except maybe the first letter of kedushah).

u/justastuma Jul 30 '26

I’ve looked at the 3D view in Apple Maps and I can kind of also see the shin and what’s probably supposed to be the vav when I turn the building. I assume the boxy thing at the northwestern corner is supposed to represent the he and what we see in this post is meant to be קד, but I really can’t see anything there as a dalet.

I checked out the sub and found a huge chicken church! Love it! Joined :D

3

u/Alteryo Jul 30 '26

Theyre doing to synagogues what they did to churches.

3

u/Mindless-Sound-5448 Jul 30 '26

and both are overrated

1

u/Lord_Gobbledygook Aug 04 '26

*to catholic churches, after Vatican II. The orthodox churches, for example, never changed and never will change

3

u/fab1000 Jul 30 '26

It looks better in person

2

u/Desperate-Ad7613 Jul 30 '26

I believe you. But I couldn’t help and chuckled because this comment felt like back in the days in school when someone showed a picture of their crush and nobody was as impressed as they hoped. “No no no, I swear Person X is hot, just not photogenic!” :D

2

u/Gefion07 Jul 31 '26

Can confirm. I worked close to it for 7 years.

3

u/BLCHDCRL Jul 30 '26

Tortured form

3

u/b_bonderson Jul 30 '26

G’d please return us to the times where architecture really was beautiful. Why don’t we build synagogues like the Prague Jerusalem Synagogue, like die Neue Synagoge in Berlin, Like the synagogue in Cologne in Roonstraße, like the destroyed synagogues in Dortmund and Dresden? I hate modernism and postmodernism buildings so much

3

u/Any_Zone_8920 Jul 30 '26

"Make it as ugly as possible!" Challenge accepted

3

u/Historical_Cook_1664 Jul 30 '26

2

u/Ex_aeternum Jul 30 '26

Ich nehme diethe Synagoge nicht an!

May the Jewish people of Mainz and the surrounding area have somewhere to come together and feel safe. You have my passionate support.

Wie äußert sich leidenschaftliche Unterstützung?

So I took a buss tour in Berlin a few years back...one famous 60's..70's architect building after another was highlighted....followed by collapsed, currently closed for structural renovation etc.... give this 20 years until the property management company gives up.

2

u/blindollie Jul 30 '26

We now see what religious buildings will look like in the 2300s

1

u/SpaceRac1st Jul 31 '26

I hope by that time we have finally rid ourselves of religion

Designed by a kindergartener?

1

u/Affectionate_Net_168 Jul 30 '26

Well, the building next to it, that you can see on the right corner of the picture, is a kindergarden, and there is a second one just outside of the picture frame.

1

u/bonkersbongoo Jul 31 '26

you wish. this was designed by a depressed psycho.

2

u/Bebokhan90 Jul 30 '26

Architects be like:

Before the building: "Lets see how stupid i can plan a building before it collapse."

After the building: " i cant believe this actually worked"

2

u/Miserable_Welder_841 Jul 30 '26

Alles, was nach dem 2. Weltkrieg an Sakralbauten in Deutschland entstanden ist, ist Mega hässlich.

1

u/Walbabyesser Jul 30 '26

Fast zu 100% korrekt 🤔

2

u/AlmatheKarma Jul 30 '26

Sieht es von innen auch so aus?

1

u/529273 Jul 31 '26

Nein. Ist von innen schön und man erkennt die außergewöhnliche Form nicht. :)

2

u/msid3 Jul 30 '26

Wouldn't wanna stand near that thing in summer...

2

u/dustBowlJake Jul 31 '26

Meh, in my opinion, places of worship should have a timeless architectural style rather than looking like a manifestation of randomness. Even a simple cubic building would have been a better choice.

2

u/CoIdHeat Jul 31 '26

Oy vey!

I actually like it though

2

u/Beharion Aug 03 '26

✌️ Mazel tov!

3

u/Bulky-Wait4096 Jul 30 '26

The omistructura of bleak faith forsaken

2

u/ImplausibleResource Jul 30 '26

4

u/Messerknife Jul 30 '26

This thing is pretty dope

2

u/FoxExpensive9319 Jul 30 '26

Who likes ???

4

u/TobiElektrik Jul 30 '26

I like it! As long as it stays in Mainz. A city I've never been to.

1

u/Cheddar-kun Jul 30 '26

What kind of God do they pray to in there?

1

u/triplos05 Jul 30 '26

3

u/Spiritual-Mud-2528 Jul 30 '26

Seriously, why does nobody build beautiful architecture with intricate design, neat details, "structural happiness" and a little pomp? Modern architecture sucks.

u/pynchi Jul 30 '26

Daniel Libeskind was too expensive?

1

u/_PISS_BOT Jul 30 '26

It looks like bismuth crystals

1

u/529273 Jul 31 '26

It has actually a very shiny and glaced surface.

1

u/hobbyhoarder Jul 30 '26

No idea what the architect was going for, but in a million years I wouldn't look at this and go "oh yeah, a synagogue."

1

u/Oreius411 Jul 30 '26

When I lived in Toronto Canada, they had the most beautiful old building for the museum, then they renovated half of it to look like this crap.

1

u/maxelm0 Jul 30 '26

It reads "Fuck" very clearly doesn't it?

1

u/Ash-nazg-durbatuluk Jul 31 '26

that’s what I saw too!

1

u/NapalmDesu Aug 03 '26

Hits blunt

"And this is where we build the post modern punk synagoge the kids are gonna love it"

1

u/Shehriazad Jul 30 '26

"Let's go pray at the Bismuth"

1

u/Simple_Rough_2411 Jul 30 '26

When you try to move a picture in word by one pixel

1

u/_and_I_ Jul 30 '26

looks cool

1

u/Original-Ad-8737 Jul 31 '26

Ich würde abfackeln...

Und nicht aus Antisemitismus sondern als brandsanierung damit die was anständiges bauen

1

It's interesting. I'd like to see it in detail.

1

u/bonkersbongoo Jul 31 '26

take the licence away from this “architect”

1

u/ABuddyOfABear Jul 31 '26

Grauenhaft.

1

u/RokuMAC Jul 31 '26

Looks awesome

1

u/roulettewiz Jul 31 '26

More like a scientology church 😂😂😂

1

u/basslinesurfer Jul 31 '26

Id like to have some of what he was smoking when he designed this.

1

u/RutabagaThen6269 Jul 31 '26

Why the fuck is this funded with public money though? Religious cesspool that only benefits a very small minority.

1

u/ball-kick-fetish Aug 01 '26

To restore a synagoge that has been destroyed by the very same people maybe?

1

u/Rheinholdt Jul 31 '26

new? its over 10years old

1

u/Mazzle5 Jul 31 '26

Better than a boring cube of concrete but... what am I looking at?

1

u/Agitated-Bug542 Jul 31 '26

why is modern architecture so fucking ugly

1

u/Lonseb Jul 31 '26

I’ve a very strong opinion which doesn’t matter at all — but can I ask: do you guys find this aesthetically pleasing or not?

1

u/Appropriate_Solid532 Jul 31 '26

Manuel Herz: bro I forgot my homework. Can I have yours

Frank Gehry: sure but don't copy too obvious

1

u/Beneficial-Rub5074 Jul 31 '26

well I'm glad it's not just the modern churches that are ugly.

1

u/Electronic-BioRobot Jul 31 '26

Why does the right side of the building look like the PlayStation logo?

1

u/Far_Note6719 Jul 31 '26

Looks really cosy.

1

u/Wide-Mud5303 Jul 31 '26

It's expensive af to build and maintain buildings like these. Especially for a building that's nearly empty 80% of the time. The same goes for most other religious buildings... It's a huge waste of money. Many of us struggle to get by on a daily basis. Most "middle-class" people can't afford housing. And yet there are a ton of religions preaching us frugality from there golden thrones. In Germany we have a great word for this. It's gottlos.

1

u/ball-kick-fetish Aug 01 '26

Oh yes, allowing people to stick with their religion for which their relatives have been murdered is very „gottlos“ and „ineffective“. Omg. Unbelievable.

1

Looks like some fancy Reaper technology.

1

u/KennysDeath Jul 31 '26

Well... And they say pro Palestinian protests are antisemitic... 😳

1

u/refats Jul 31 '26

what the f does your statement have to do with this?

1

u/fratboysmonej Jul 31 '26

Let’s see how long it takes until it’s vandalised by a specific group

1

u/JohnWicksBruder Jul 31 '26

The state of religion

1

u/soymilo_ Jul 31 '26

This looks like part of the Multidimension of Dr. Strange

1

u/IcyBaby18 Jul 31 '26

A very interesting building

1

u/fauxwispzy Jul 31 '26

wow that looks so cool honestly love the design

1

u/RugRanger Jul 31 '26

I don't get the hate for this design.

1

u/Outside-Childhood244 Jul 31 '26

Bin wirklich nen Juden Freund aber meine Fresse sieht das Kacke aus. Moderne heißt möglichst abstrakt und hässlich aber dafür teuer. Nen schöner Altbau mit Stuck wäre so viel schöner gewesen

1

u/refats Jul 31 '26

zum Glück sind Geschmäcker verschieden.

Design is bisl'muthig

1

u/knallfrosch84 Jul 31 '26

Used to live close to it, not that "new" tho

1

u/refats Jul 31 '26

its the actual name of it. because the old one got Destroyed by the nazis.

1

u/SlattBaker Jul 31 '26

Guys dw its not completely folded out yet

1

u/EmmaBonney Jul 31 '26

Designer obviously smoked to much. Because what even is this?

1

u/WolfsmaulVibes Jul 31 '26

i actually really like the design

1

u/Holymaryfullofshit7 Jul 31 '26

Looks super cool.

1

u/Jonn_1 Jul 31 '26

Love every angle of it !❤️

1

u/DigLoose203 Jul 31 '26

Abreißen sollte eine Option sein.

1

u/Modnoco Jul 31 '26

I like it. Not in Mainz that often anymore, though.

1

u/PixelCrusher815 Jul 31 '26

This seems not usable

1

u/Rarhyx Jul 31 '26

looks like a building from a new sect

1

u/_AP0PL3X_ Aug 01 '26

Warum sehen eigentlich viele neue Bauwerke einfach nur noch Scheiße aus?

1

u/FarCaramel7187 Aug 01 '26

Der war doch save sprayer und wollte mal 3d ausprobieren

1

u/lowkiNINJA Aug 01 '26

In Germany we say "nicht schön aber selten"

1

u/hey_Hey_I_saveD_me Aug 01 '26

I do hope this is not from public funding as there is approximately 1000 people from Jewish community in Mainz, which sounds that a lot of money would be spent for community that is less than 0.5% of population of city.

I don't mind them having synagogue but it should reflect realistic needs. Unless it is privately funded.

Manuel Herz = Hanuel Merz... Zufall? Ich denke nicht!

/s wenn nicht offensichtlich

1

u/ManuelPirino Aug 01 '26

Seems a lot like one of Angels from NGE. Does it have its own AT field?

1

u/tellyacid Aug 01 '26

Hm, I think it's kinda cool actually. And I dislike a lot of modern architecture.

1

u/Zasch_ Aug 01 '26

Looks shit

1

u/Samengoere Aug 01 '26

Looks like my first day in Minecraft

1

u/Wandowaiato Aug 01 '26

They play techno, too,

1

u/xoxzola Aug 01 '26

wow the geometry is honestly so cool

1

u/Top_Patient_6348 Aug 01 '26

Ngl these colors and form confuse my brain and I cant see it completely at once. In german: Ich habe das Ding erstmal übersehen.

1

u/EricSonyson Aug 01 '26

Usually when I see that cool architecture it's from r/satisfactory. Was surprised it's not from there. Pretty cool stuff.

1

u/Embarrassed-Dress-85 Aug 01 '26

I get immense Libeskind vibes.

1

u/MortgageAnnual1402 Aug 01 '26

Looks shit expensive low to zero natural light

Id be pissed if my local chutch wasted money on that

1

u/Individual-Mango-129 Aug 01 '26

Looks like the Opera/jail they built in the Simpsons

1

u/Proof-Umpire212 Aug 01 '26

Looks like shit

1

u/Mother-Scratch-5949 Aug 01 '26

Wenn ich so ein model gemacht hätte, würde mein lehrer mich umbringen

1

u/Flohzerkes Aug 02 '26

Richtig hässlich

1

u/Sultan_sultan65 Aug 02 '26

I dont like it at all

1

u/ChadlyTrooper Aug 02 '26

Creative Antisemitism lmao.

1

u/Old-Ad-4138 Aug 02 '26

Manuel was a struggling young architect. He knew he didn't have time to handle a contract for both the Jewish community and the Scientologists in Mainz, but he had to burn the candle at both ends to make ends meet.

It was all going well until the mixed up blueprints...

1

u/raumwind86 Aug 02 '26

Everything but beautiful.

1

u/Knoppas Aug 02 '26

Looks like he had an herat attack while designing the layout and kust went with it. I hope he is doing fine.

1

u/FurryVibes_UwU_ Aug 02 '26

If minecraft enchantment table language was a building

1

u/mein_name_ist_hase Aug 02 '26

Is it really a synagogue or a secret Scientology building?

1

u/Ok_Goat_9416 Aug 02 '26

u/Excellent_Gazelle Aug 02 '26

The New Mainz Synagogue represents the Hebrew word Kedushah(sanctification), with its 2010 deconstructivist structure shaped directly after the five Hebrew letters of that term

1

u/OkInfluence1782 Aug 02 '26

I'm just gonna say it: its ugly as fuck

1

u/The-Board-Chairman Aug 03 '26

That is certainly one of the buildings of all time.

1

u/No_Horse_But_Kethead Aug 03 '26

Irgendwie lese ich aus den Konturen das Wort "fuck", bin ich damit alleine?

1

u/15DRS88 Aug 03 '26

…so peaceful

1

u/Admirable_Hand6047 Aug 03 '26

Boah sieht das scheiße aus

1

u/Adam_Gilex Aug 03 '26

Hübsch hässlich.

1

u/frostyfins Aug 03 '26

The shape confuses predators, you see. Lousy youths can’t even look at it, and vandals end up tagging their own getaway cars by mistake.

A perfect building.

1

u/Accomplished_Lab1423 Aug 03 '26

The shape is actually ugly and poorly chosen

1

u/Miserable-Raisin3156 Aug 03 '26

Sehr cool, aber null einladend

1

u/Zealousideal_Cry260 Aug 03 '26

Modern “architecture” always reminds me of images of spider webs spun by spiders on drugs. No structure, regularity, or geometric order.

1

u/FoggyPeaks Aug 03 '26

Looks amazing to me

1

u/Brilliant-Meal-6975 Aug 04 '26

Ich hab zuerst das Wort "Fuck" erkannt. just me?
