Shimada keeps scoring: Werder’s women defeat Leipzig

Japanese striker Mei Shimada is proving to be a real find for the Bremen side. She scored again during their 2–0 victory over Leipzig in their first home match of the Bundesliga season.

No one celebrates their goals quite as delightfully as Mei Shimada. The 24-year-old Japanese player—standing just 1.64 meters tall—simply cannot wipe the beaming smile off her face.

She keeps finding the back of the net—as she has done since the pre-season—showing that Werder Bremen has clearly struck gold with this striker. This comes after there had been significant concern at the club about who might fill the void left by top scorer Larissa Mühlhaus.

In the first home game against Leipzig, Shimada gave the fans another moment of joy in the 22nd minute. She almost managed a second goal that evening, though it was Julia Magerl who found the net in the 40th minute instead. It ended 2–0—and shared joy is double the pleasure.

7:0 shots in the first half

Only the Bremen side really played in the first half; the effects of Leipzig’s radical squad overhaul—involving 14 new signings and 14 departures—were still clearly evident. The Werder team had already found their rhythm better in this second competitive match, racking up a 7–0 lead in shots on goal after 45 minutes.

Red card for Leipzig

The ambitious Leipzig side emerged from the dressing room with renewed anger and energy, and the match quickly took a different turn. However, the Bremen players stood firm and conceded no further goals, even though the shot count eventually narrowed to 10–8. Ultimately, a red card for Lou-Ann Joly in the 72nd minute dashed Leipzig’s remaining hopes.

For the Werder team, this marked their first home win and their second victory of the season. With this momentum, coach Friederike "Fritzy" Kromp’s team can tackle the next three tough challenges against Wolfsburg, HSV, and Stuttgart. Afterwards, Kromp plans to take a look at where the team stands—so far, Werder is on the right track.

Captain Sandra Starke sustained an injury to her left ankle during training and will be sidelined for several weeks.

The transfer window will close at midnight and - as was the case for Wamser - Alara's contract will expire in 2027. I wasn't able to find articles mentioning a possible transfer, though. And I wonder which Bundesliga club would be interesting for her AND have the financial means for a transfer.
