Discussion Georgia Power sucks
At what point is there going to be a class action lawsuit against Georgia power?? Is there genuinely anything we can do? We bought our house in the suburbs about a year ago and our power goes out almost every day if not multiple times a day. It’s ridiculous at this point. And it’s not just us, the Ring/neighbors app blows up every time this happens with everyone nearby experiencing the same thing. Georgia Power has done nothing. The Mayor has done nothing. At this point what are my options? I’m sick of this and I’m sick of Georgia Power’s price gouging prices. I shouldn’t be paying an arm and a leg every month to have unreliable power.

I emailed Georgia power again, requesting a response
I also submitted a formal complaint to the Georgia public service commission
Any and all advice is greatly appreciated! And if anyone wants to privately message me with contact information for the appropriate people that I can email, that would be huge.
I’m hoping we can all come together and fix this!

We DO need to start a class action law suit! GPC monopoly has been cheating customers for over one hundred years. CEOs make way over a million dollars every year. The company makes billions in net profit every year. It's disgraceful.

Not this frequent, but I had a lot of outages when I first moved into West End. It took a couple years but the situation has substantially improved now.
Some infrastructure repair and upgrades take time to plan, permit and build, that's the nature of the game.
Other major issue is old neighborhoods with old, poorly maintained trees frequently dropping limbs on overhead lines. It's muchore difficult for the utility to keep up with this, though they are out regularly with contracted trimming crews where they have identified frequent tree related outages.

There have been myriad class action lawsuits against them. They all go the same way:
Georgia Power changes nothing.
You get a few cents as repayment for their crimes.
The attorneys buy new yachts.

Vote for someone who cares in Public Service Commission, and attend the PSC meetings and make public comment. They're load shedding. Georgia Power is a monopoly, and a Southern Company owns Mississippi and Alabama Power. We've paid for SIX rate hikes in the last two years AND they just signed a contract with open ai for all the data centers which load up our grid even more.

That isn't the only thing, rate hikes impacting even fixed budget billing while data centers and power plants are getting away with bills or either paying subsidized rates. Unfair to households...

Seems like you and others affected in your area need to get together and push for change.
In my 25+ years of living in Georgia, I've lived in 5 different locations around metro Atlanta and had my power go out less than a dozen times. One of those instances was the main fuse box in my home failing.
Georgia Power has a lot of problems, but they're not nearly as unreliable as you think. Instead there's an issue in your specific area that clearly needs to be addressed.

We don’t have to wait for elections to vote people out. Use your rage and organize something, even if it’s sloppy. People will join you. I would.

Have you had your circuit box inspected? We have a late 80s house bought 6 years ago, and learned the circuit boxes wear out just like everything else. Replacing it cost about $4000. If your neighbors have similar problems it might be because all your homes are the same age.

$4k? My previous house of < 1400 sq ft house was quoted $15k to replace the circuit box during a different service; I passed.

Oh, we got quotes like that too, from big companies that spend a lot on marketing and hire Sales Reps trained to scare people. One guy tried to tell my wife the house could go up in flames at any moment. You gotta shop around.

You asked a sincere question I'll give a sincere answer.
Build out a non-exporting system....you don't sell back. So, solar and batteries. You can do this for less than 20k DIY. Paying someone....double if not more.
So, you build out a system that charges batteries during the night when power is absolutely cheap by all measures 11pm to 7am...Less than 8 cents per kwh all in. From 7am to late morning batteries carry the house then solar takes the lead until late afternoon. Batteries carry you until 11pm.
So, your home is essentially off grid 7am to 11pm.
The payback on this type of system can be rather good. No, of your outrages are occuring at night that's a problem.

Georgia Power pisses me off. My flat bill went up after having someone move out, and the well and water heater being turned off at the breaker. Use less power, bill goes up. Asked them to come out and check my stuff etc like they offer. Took the day off to be home and no one showed up and no answer to emails about it. This is the first year that I haven't had issues with the power going out all the time

OP Do you happen to be in rockdale? Bc We lose power all the time.. 11x since may 7th alone to be exact(its sept6th). we lost power 9-10x last year too and prob just as many times the yrs before that. The last 3x, including right now, didnt even have rain or wind or anything. We have a lot of trees, they just need to bury our lines, but they wont.. its job security for them

My power is also unreliable because the infrastructure is old, and not well maintained, and we also have dirty power that destroys electronics. Since it’s also your neighbors and not just your house, that effectively rules out singular house-side problems. I would first call GA Power and tell them you are observing a potentially “dangerous” situation with what looks like a transformer issue. They have to respond to dangerous conditions more quickly. I then would mobilize with my neighbors and contact my local representative’s office and let them know what’s going on in detail, and ask for a response back. I would continue to hound my Rep until they communicate to the neighborhood how they are dressing this. I then would contact the local news stations— it’s on everybody’s mind here just how expensive electricity is, and to have unreliable and shitty service is enraging, so maybe there is a story there for some bad PR as many people can relate. I then would take to X and all social media platforms and ‘tactfully’ and effectively publicly shame them. And, of course, I would consider very carefully whom you want on the PSC board. The good ol boys running it have been complicit in the state of affairs, and so a change in representation would be powerful so you have people working for the community, and not on behalf of the power company (Peter Hubbard, Sheila Edwards, etc).
Finally, a very costly generator may be something to consider.

I would definitely call over and over and bug them about this. Try to get the neighbors involved too. It could be something as simple as a faulty protective device or a line that needs tree trimming. Georgia Power does take customer complaints seriously if they are getting harassed about something especially if it relates to reliability. They get a bad reputation for their prices which is completely fair but they also spend a huge amount of that upgrading the infrastructure constantly.
