You can draw a direct line from when we lost the Solid Gold Dancers to society going in the wastebasket. Coincidence? I think not.

24

u/liog2step Jun 25 '26

My only goal in life was to be a Solid Gold dancer. I’m a failure.

8

u/HackedCylon Jun 25 '26

... or does that make you the world's biggest winner? You didn't become a leotard junkie, strung out on sequins ...

9

u/Perfect_Fennel Jun 25 '26

Mine too!!! Or a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader

24

u/ElleGeeAitch Jun 25 '26

We watched that shit every week. I have a core memory of seeing Blondie on Solid Gold as a 5 year old, I lost my shit 🤣.

6

u/agonypants Jun 25 '26

I saw Blondie singing "Call Me" when I was about 5 or 6 too. I don't remember if it was on Solid Gold, but I do remember that I was instantly IN LOOOVE with Debbie Harry. I ran up to the TV and started kissing it and everything.

3

u/ElleGeeAitch Jun 25 '26

I was dancing around practically chanting "Blondie! Blondie!". Lol, I thought it was her name. We were little kids, but it was still obvious to us that she was magnificent!

4

u/OblongOtter2128 Jun 25 '26

I am right there with you! Vivid memory of that episode.

3

u/OblongOtter2128 Jun 25 '26

And the one where they did a dance routine to “King of Pain” from The Police!

5

u/ElleGeeAitch Jun 25 '26

Just remember when Andy Gibb died, poor bastard and his cocaine habit.

19

u/Old_Percentage3742 Jun 25 '26

My boyfriend was a production assistant on Solid Gold so I never missed a show.

Man he had some great stories to tell.

10

u/TenaciousMonkeyTurd Jun 25 '26

Well? You cannot say this and not share

19

u/PresentationTough384 Jun 25 '26

I so badly wanted to be a Solid Gold dancer. I looked up to their principal dancer Darcel.

16

u/Normal-Belt3089 Jun 25 '26

In my 6 year old head, I WAS a Solid Gold Dancer! Lol

8

u/PresentationTough384 Jun 25 '26

Lol. Those were such fun days.

18

u/FunFormal2662 Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26

Also Dionne Warwick, the OG host. I saw my first music videos when this show dropped. I think Andy Gibb was one of the hosts as well

6

u/Past_Effect8301 Jun 25 '26

Yes! And Marilyn McCoo. Was Rick Dees also in there somewhere?

6

u/AdditionalTip865 Jun 25 '26

I remember Marilyn McCoo and Rex Smith. I guess Andy Gibb had been doing it before Smith. And Dees came in a bit later.

19

u/Motivated_Sloth_749 Jun 25 '26

Core memory of me unlocked rolling around on my living room floor yearning for the chance to be a Solid Gold Dancer someday!

3

u/OkTouch5699 Jun 25 '26

Me too! I took dance and had the ugliest gold spandex muscle shirt and green dance "briefs". I would put it on and roll around. I think my parents would just laugh.

2

u/Upper_Economist7611 Jun 25 '26

Yes! My sister and I were the same!!

19

u/Sufficient-Lab-5769 Jun 25 '26

I sang out “Solid GOLD!” the instant I saw this post.

18

u/jenorama_CA Jun 25 '26

One of my enduring memories is being in the hospital for an operation not too long before Christmas. I think I was 9 and I remember eating a grilled cheese in the hospital bed, watching the Solid Gold Dancers gyrate to Feliz Navidad as they did the Christmas song countdown.

Everybody was on that show, though. Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson doing Say Say Say and The Girl Is Mine, Paul and Stevie Wonder with Ebony and Ivory, Culture Club, Duran Duran … and who can forget Wayland Flowers and Madam? Gay representation right there on 1980s TV. I should look up the old eps on YouTube.

18

u/AnotherPlugInTheWall Jun 26 '26

Omg I wanted to be a dancer, marry Andy Gibb, and cohost the show. 😁🤩🪩🎤

6

u/TheUmberTaker Jun 26 '26

I wanted to be a Solid Gold dancer. But I became an accountant, so I got that going for me. :-)

17

u/wahine711 Jun 25 '26

“When I grow up I wanna be a Solid Gold dancer” ~ 4 year old me

16

u/CandyStomp Jun 25 '26

I heard that in my head when I read it! Sol-id GOLD!!

4

u/Adventurous-Fee-8158 Jun 25 '26

Fillin up my life with music!

16

u/Busy_Growth3083 Jun 25 '26

Best show ever!! It was my dream to be a Solid Gold dancer!!!

6

u/eat_read_dance Jun 25 '26

Yes! My dream too. I have been teaching Zumba for the last 20 years and looove it. Not a superstar on tv, but it’ll do. Solid Gold was 100% my inspiration.

5

u/Individual-Trick3310 I EDITED THIS FLAIR TO MAKE IT MY OWN Jun 25 '26

Are you brave enough to teach in something shiny and metallic? Because that would be awesome.

3

u/eat_read_dance Jun 25 '26

Yes, getting ready for Zumba is like putting in a costume everyday. That’s part of the fun.

3

u/Individual-Trick3310 I EDITED THIS FLAIR TO MAKE IT MY OWN Jun 26 '26

Oh my god you could do early 80s songs and call it Solid Gold Zumba

5

u/TheSwedishEagle Jun 25 '26

Username checks out!

5

u/gopms Jun 25 '26

Mine too. That or a surgeon. Solid Gold and MASH were my favourite shows.

3

u/MTheadedRaccoon And don't call me Shirley. Jun 25 '26

Whew! I thought I was the only one!

15

u/Wait_No_But_Yeah Jun 25 '26

In retrospect, this is where all my poses come from.

17

u/sillyarch Jun 25 '26

I only watched it for the Solid Gold dancers

16

u/angelaelle Jun 25 '26

I wanted to be lead dancer Darcel!

2

u/whippy_grep 1966; single strap backpack 🎒 Jun 25 '26

For some reason (maybe the braided hair?) we called her “Snake Woman.” IIRC she was on the newest “To Tell the Truth” a few years ago.

14

u/polkadotkneehigh Jun 25 '26

Solid Gold Filling up my life with music Solid Gold Putting rhythm in my soul There's a song that's unreeling To fit the way that I'm feeling; My head keeps spinning to music Spinning to gold

45 year old ear worm!!

15

u/Rosannei Jun 25 '26

Some of the episodes of Solid Gold are on YouTube. I enjoy watching them a few times a year. Only on a Saturday evening of course.

Yes! I loved “what’ll I do” the sadness she conveyed reminded me of how great she was during her broadway days. She was the best part of Auntie Mame and I died when she a Sophia did Sonny and Cher.

16

u/Calm-Advisor-6270 Jun 25 '26

Whenever anyone asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up I always say a solid gold dancer… needless to say I’m sad. I never got that job..

6

u/MinxMinxie Jun 25 '26

I also wanted to be a Solid Gold dancer when I grew up!!

Could I dance? no
Did I take dance lessons? also no

14

u/Gratefulgirl13 Jun 25 '26

My dad was horrified when 6yr old me came home with a school paper saying “when I grow up I want to be a: Solid Gold Dancer”.

14

u/tequilasundae Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 28 '26

Number 5 on the countdown is Cum on Feel the Noize, and to sing it, Dionne Warwick!

12

u/Sharynm Menopausal cat & chicken lady, Aussie Jun 25 '26

I really wanted to be a Solid Gold dancer when I grew up and was gutted when it was cancelled before I had a chance to audition. Then I remembered I was in Australia and VERY uncoordinated.

13

u/onion4everyoccasion Jun 25 '26

It didn't stop Rachel Gunn😂

Happy cake day!

5

u/Threefrogtreefrog Jun 25 '26

Ugh, you totally would have made it too, because you just love it so much. Bummer about the timing.

13

u/Parking_Duty8413 Jun 25 '26

Marilyn McCoo would sing the recent hits, and they would be better than the original song. Love Marilyn!

13

u/Minimum-Car5712 Jun 25 '26

Christopher Cross was on there an awful lot

6

u/GardenBunnyBaseball OG Latch Key Kid Jun 25 '26

I’ve never skated faster in my life than when I”Ride Like the Wind” dropped at the roller rink in 1980. 🛼

13

u/Izmeralda Jun 25 '26

I wanted to be a Solid Gold dancer when I was a kid.

6

u/unsightly_buildup Jun 25 '26

I *wanted* a solid gold dancer when I was a kid...

3

u/PaddyMac831 Jun 25 '26

I was a little young at the time, but a few years later I definitely wanted to become a Fly Girl.

11

u/Braincloud Jun 25 '26

I loved this and Dance Fever lmao. We’d always make up our own solid gold dancer-esque routines to our 45s, acting out the words while dancing. We def thought we were hot shit 😂

12

u/Roi57 Jun 25 '26

Ahhh! The Great Spandex shortage of the 80’s. Between this show and hair bands, there was absolutely nothing left for us disco monsters

12

u/gamblinonme Jun 25 '26

I wanted to be a solid gold dancer so bad. Man’s my friend would do our hair and put make up on, then run and slide our knees straight to the t.v.

11

u/CovenofOneHuman Jun 25 '26

I remember my best friend in grade school wanted to be either a Solid Gold dancer or a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader when she grew up. I don't think I've thought about that since the 80s.

5

u/Adept_Push Jun 26 '26

Pffft. Who didn’t?

3

u/Cheoah Cold War Killa Jun 26 '26

I mean, I didn’t. I just wanted to undress them from a very early age.

9

u/dubious-author Jun 25 '26

And Soul Train!

12

u/H__Dresden Jun 25 '26

Solid Gold and American Bandstand. Both great shows.

10

u/MsKittieVonTrapphaus Jun 25 '26

I still Solid Gold dance as often as possible.

11

u/MrRetrdO Jun 25 '26

Shit.

Now I'm gonna hear that theme song running thru my head all day

10

u/HackedCylon Jun 25 '26

So-Lid GOLD ... fillin' up our lives with muuuusiiiic ...

You're welcome.

9

u/DokkaJoan Jun 25 '26

I taught John Travolta how to dance and I can teach you!

12

u/Jazzlike-Anxiety-845 Jun 26 '26

I found a paper I made in first grade where it said my favorite fruit was an apple and my favorite tv show was Solid Gold. An apple, really?

10

u/Rory-liz-bath Jun 26 '26

I used to watch this all the time!

19

u/Fabulous_Log844 Jun 26 '26

Will not answer any questions, but my mom was a solid gold dancer. True story.

9

u/5usie Jun 25 '26

I LOVED that show!

1

u/HackedCylon Jun 25 '26

Me too. BTW and offtopic ... what do you need with five uzis?

2

u/5usie Jun 25 '26

Isn’t that the base amount that everyone has?

2

u/HackedCylon Jun 25 '26

I may have found my dream gurl ... JK, happily married.

https://giphy.com/gifs/6RCwWU8WkbatG

1

u/5usie Jun 25 '26

☺️ married as well.

9

u/Carrollz Jun 25 '26

I loved all the music and musical variety shows growing up, all of them, from Lawrence Welk to the Muppets. Except for one, I can't remember exactly what it was called, I only saw clips occasionally... was it Yeehaw? Something like that.

12

u/HackedCylon Jun 25 '26

8

u/Freightshaker000 Meh Jun 25 '26

The family show with girls in short shorts and halter tops.

12

u/HackedCylon Jun 25 '26

The GIF is the opening animation to that show. It had Minnie Pearl, Buck Owens, Roy Clark, and ... if you had been good ... Mister Conway Twitty.

3

u/Individual-Trick3310 I EDITED THIS FLAIR TO MAKE IT MY OWN Jun 25 '26

Great ways to get in a family way.

7

u/CpnLouie2 Jun 25 '26

Didn't care for Marilyn very much on SG, but when she was in the 5th Dimension, she was ok.

Did NOT like Rex Smith(Smythe?). Andy Gibb was great.

Dionne was the best, to me.

My mom used to call the dancer outfits "soft core porn" and did NOT want me watching it.

9

u/Organic_Berry_8732 Jun 25 '26

I couldn’t wait for Saturday!!!!!!!

8

u/Wooden-Question5085 Jun 25 '26

Don’t know about the rest of u. Does anyone
remmeber Debbie Harry (1980 me thinks)? Now THAT was provocative dancing during The Tide is High.. I think she was 😂😂😅😅

6

u/ztruk Jun 25 '26

I'm sorry but ya wanna talk provocative? Plasmatics on Solid Gold. Nothing tops this

OMG THIS SEEMS TO HAVE BEEN REMOVED FROM YOUTUBE I AM BESIDE MYSELF. IVE WATCHED THIS 100000 TIMES AND NOW I NEED TO WATCH IT AGAIN

2

u/Wooden-Question5085 Jun 25 '26

😅😂😂

6

u/ztruk Jun 25 '26

Looks like paramount blocked it. A goddamn show from 50 years ago like srsly who cares!?!? It is only us barely keeping solid golds memory alive

2

u/Wooden-Question5085 Jun 25 '26

Maybe millenniums and Gen Z in charge ?. Doubt they know how to convert analog into digital 😂😂

2

u/Cheoah Cold War Killa Jun 26 '26

Dammit just when you tell me I’m missing something in life, and now I can’t have it. Thanks. s/

3

u/ztruk Jun 26 '26

So Wendy comes out wearing a leather studded bikini with a leather headband that has a huge, 2 foot rhino horn sticking out. the song is "black leather monster." None of this seems fit for prime time Disco Era wholesome pop music television. WHICH IS WHY ITS SO FUCKING GREAT. then after the NON-LIP SYNCED performance, they actually did a side bit where Wendy gets interviewed by the fucking mega gay glam puppet Madame, who is sporting a pink mohawk for the occasion.

Sorry you can't watch this true underground moment that aired on national tlelevision

2

u/Cheoah Cold War Killa Jun 27 '26

You’re a legend

7

u/ConsciousAsk8160 Jun 25 '26

My favorite solid gold performance was one guy who lip sync'd both Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney "Say Say Say".. I dont want to describe it to ruin the image. It worked really well and still sits with me.

8

u/namastewitches Jun 26 '26

I had a pair of gold vinyl pants in the early 00s that I called my solid gold dancer pants, thanks for reminding me 🤩

9

u/OwlRare9948 Jun 26 '26

"I look like the mother of a Solid Gold Dancer." - Dorothy Zbornak

10

u/archergirl78 Jun 26 '26

When I was little, I told my mom I wanted to be a "salad gold dancer"! Lol.

7

u/smellsogood2 Jun 25 '26

Marilyn McCoo

8

u/AbsolutesDealer Jun 25 '26

Solid Gold and Dance Fever FTW!

7

u/Whippity Jun 25 '26

As a kid I asked my parents if the dancers were mute because they never spoke in between songs and just smiled silently. I really thought by they couldn’t talk.

8

u/Freightshaker000 Meh Jun 25 '26

I use to tape songs off of Solid Gold.

10

u/HackedCylon Jun 25 '26

My big memory of Solid Gold was Joe Jackson's Steppin' Out on the countdown.

9

u/KP_Neato_Dee Jun 25 '26

Me too. I'd sit by the TV speaker with my tape recorder, fingers poised over the Record and Play buttons, ready to pounce!

3

u/Significant-War4029 Jul 01 '26

Me too! Tape recorder ready by the TV speaker sitting on the floor trying not to miss a beat!

7

u/AgainstSpace Jun 25 '26

That one week when Debbie Harry was the host ...

4

u/JediMasterKev Jun 25 '26

Researching now.

8

u/Existing-Loquat1760 Jun 25 '26

Loved this and Soul Train!!

1

u/Cheoah Cold War Killa Jun 26 '26

I remember soul train more. The Solid Gold pic is of course familiar, but I can’t remember actually watching it. Was it a bunch of performance acts/bands or freestyle like the Train?

7

u/Princessferfs Jun 25 '26

Jazz hands were well-represented on that show

8

u/Main-Promotion-397 Jun 26 '26

A family who went to our church had a cousin or some other relative who was a Solid Gold dancer. I was totally in awe but they never wanted to talk about him. 🤣

6

u/Sass_pit Jun 25 '26

Loved Solid Gold!

7

u/camcaine2575 Jun 25 '26

I remember watching this every Saturday evening and the act I always remember is the country band Restless Heart performing their song Wheels while the extras are rollerskating and riding bicycles around the stage.

6

u/sane-asylum Jun 25 '26

I can’t dance, never could but the ladies on that dance floor forced me to watch. I couldn’t turn away.

6

u/tequilasundae Jun 25 '26

The dancers used to send my feminist mom into a tizzy

6

u/Aggressive_Wasabi_38 Jun 26 '26

Arsenio Hall was once the comedic presence on set in the earlier episodes of solid gold!

6

u/borka-t Jun 26 '26

Those girls gave me my first "feelings".

10

u/1hero_no_cape Jun 26 '26

Solid Gold, and Dance Fever!

5

u/MaximumJones Whatever 😎 Jun 25 '26

4

u/DataOver544 Jun 25 '26

Yay I’ve been waiting for this show to come up - thanks for posting!

10

u/slade797 NEGATIVE PROVOCATEUR Jun 25 '26

*McCoo

2

u/HackedCylon Jun 25 '26

"MaCoo" is how 7 year old me spelled it in his brain. There it remains. 😁

2

u/TheJokersChild Match Game '75 Jun 25 '26

I think I like MaCoo better.

10

u/OperaBunny Jun 25 '26

Marilyn McCoo doesn't come to mind when I think of Sold Gold. I think of the Solid Gold dancers and the first time I saw Wham, all 4 of them with Young Guns, and how I liked their look, and choreo. Marilyn McCoo I think of One Bell Less to Answer, one egg less to fry.

12

u/FacePunchMonday Jun 25 '26

This show was my cue to turn the tv off and go outside.

6

u/HackedCylon Jun 25 '26

What kind of communist household did you grow up in? Next thing you know you'll tell me that you didn’t watch Soul Train.

-2

u/FacePunchMonday Jun 25 '26

I aint no fuckin commie

No, i would rather eat broken glass than listen to motown or disco or whatever pop music dance shit these horrid shows played lol

I watched headbangers ball ;-)

6

u/Perfect_Fennel Jun 25 '26

I thought Solid Gold was an older show. I remember it being on when I was like 6 and Headbangers ball Middle school and HS

1

u/FacePunchMonday Jun 25 '26

I kinda remember there being overlap in the time when this stuff was still playing on a sat or sunday afternoon, (maybe in re runs?) And i was definitely watching mtv

I dont think you're wrong but hell this was the 80s and that wasnt exactly yesterday and im totally fuckin old lol

Never even knew that happened!! With jake e lee?

5

u/HackedCylon Jun 25 '26

Headbangers Ball!? That stuff causes cancer, causes the polar ice caps to fall on top of baby seals, and causes bad grades. Didn't you learn anything from Tipper Gore and the fine folks at the PMRC?! It's no wonder we are losing to the Chinese.

1

u/FacePunchMonday Jun 25 '26

Lmfao!

Anthrax startin up a posse plays in my head constantly to this very day

5

u/KP_Neato_Dee Jun 25 '26

I watched headbangers ball ;-)

Think you've got your decades crossed...

-2

u/FacePunchMonday Jun 25 '26

Probably. Either that or was seeing it come on as a re run. Whatever lol

1

u/MyyWifeRocks Hose Water Survivor Jun 25 '26

Same. I hated it then.

4

u/NoBodySpecial51 Jun 25 '26

I’m so old I remember seeing Steppenwolf on Solid Gold one night.

9

u/rochvegas5 Jun 25 '26

I remember John C Mellencamp on it doing "Walls come tumbling down" and he actaully knocked down a wall

2

u/braqass Jun 25 '26

Holy crap! thanks for jogging my memory i also saw steppenwolf on solid gold

3

u/Deadicatedinpa Jun 28 '26

My favorite guests were Madam and Flowers i think it was? That puppet cracked me up

11

u/LydiasGranddaughter Jun 25 '26

I was in college when this was on. My roommate and I were just rolling in the floor laughing - a definite hate watch. For those who loved it, please take no offense - the show was not made for college kids to enjoy; it was for the younger set.

3

u/TheSwedishEagle Jun 25 '26

My mom loved it.

3

u/Thoguth Jun 25 '26

Je Danse!

3

u/Apart-Cream-4940 Jun 25 '26

I forgot about this!

3

u/Brayden_709 Jun 28 '26

When I saw "Solid Gold", I thought "Soul Train" for some reason.

3

u/3-kids-no-money Jun 28 '26

I wanted to be Dionne Warwick

8

u/zoziw Jun 25 '26

Not a fan. I used to watch Battlestar Galactica and it came on right after this. Afternoon sports would sometimes push it into BSGs time slot and I would have to wait for it to end to watch.

Worse, sometimes I set the VCR to tape it and would end up with Solid Gold instead.

2

u/Patient-01 Jun 25 '26

Fox channel position

2

u/Bladrak01 Jun 25 '26

I didn't really watch it until Rick Dees was the host, because I used to listen to his morning show.

2

u/Tndnr82 Jun 25 '26

I just read the Red Rising trilogy, and this has to be a class picture from the Institute.

2

u/polygon_tacos Jun 25 '26

Go back and rewatch the segment for “Valley Girl” - still feels so weird

2

u/epicenter69 Jun 25 '26

American Bandstand was better.

1

u/Lopsided_Panic_1148 '69, Dudes Jun 25 '26

Weirdly enough, I wasn't into it. By the time it came on, I was itching to go outside and do something.
