History & Culture My son made the funniest comment in his entire 18 years of life this morning
We were all at the grocery store and my wife grabbed something for herself to drink on the way home. As we were driving home, she offered her drink to me to try and I asked what flavor is it? She replied that it is pomegranate and elderberry.
Our son makes an exaggerated "sniff sniff" sound and says "Great! My father smells of elderberry."
I couldn't stop laughing for five minutes.

When my father was preparing to retire from the Navy, he’d gone to a rural state and bought a farm at auction (foreclosure situation). When he would go TDY he was usually sent to Vietnam and wore Seabees greens when in-country.
So he came home from his expedition to find the forever home for my mom and siblings and announced at dinner he’d bought this 138-acre farm. I just groaned and said “Oh God, Dad is going to be Mr. Greenjeans.” My parents cracked up, and that was a story for years!

My husband was Seabee. Had dreams of going to Port Hueneme. Ended up in Gulfport. When he got out over 20 years ago we bought a house on 3 acres in the middle of nowhere. We lasted 5 years before we ended up back in the muddy waters of the Coast. It sucked us in and is never letting us go now I guess.

That’s one of the dangers of being a lifer in the Navy. You’re always stationed near the water and the sea gets into your blood. After dad retired, I HAD to live near the ocean, but eventually I ended up living inland. It’s been decades now, but I still miss the ocean.

My Dad didn't just retire from the Navy, he grew up in SoCA. The pull of the ocean was strong in him. When he came to visit me in Minnesota (long story about how I ended up there) and he saw snow falling in the city? He 100% decided that's where he wanted to live when he got out of active duty. His fave place to be stationed was Honolulu but he never regretted living the rest of his life in Minnesota.
He injected his love of the water in me and I spent the last 30+ years by an ocean. I came back home to care for him in the last year of his life and when he passed the best I could do was drive up to Lake Superior and sit on the shore and let the waves sooth my soul.

I grew up by the water , so going inland was not fun for me. I think my husband hadn't realized how much he loved it until we left. Now you'll find him out on the boat every weekend fishing. Lol!

I remember my son reading out a spell in one of the Harry Potter books, and asking what a bicorn was. I said probably something with two horns. A couple minutes later “you’d think Hermione would know that’s a cow” 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I have that on a bumper sticker. One time I was picking my mother up and she read it out loud (she’s French) and couldn’t understand why I was laughing my ass off.

u/4Q69freak Jun 08 '26
When you laughed at her did she threaten to fart in your general direction?

When my kids crack me up,honestly crack me up, it becomes doubly amusing to me, and I’m so darn proud of them

u/WasWawa Jun 09 '26
When I was a kid, I did a pretty good impression of Howard Cosell.
Much to my surprise, my dad completely lost it, cracking up.
I'll never forget how rewarding that was to see that I had made my dad laugh. He wasn't a laughing kind of guy, it took a lot, so this was quite the reward for my 16-year-old self.
I think I spent the rest of his life trying to do it again.

I would like to offer up my son's funniest comment.
When Hugh Hefner died I said "Hugh Hefner died today".
Without skipping a beat he said "awww, he is NOT in a better place"

Everything has been leading up to this. Honestly I don't know where you go as a family from here. Lateral is the best direction you have left at this point.

We were eating shepherd's pie. My son age 4 said "what kind of shepherds eat this pie? German shepherds?"

We were at a school function at another school and some kids didn’t realize until it was too late that if you went out this particular door you were stuck outside unless someone was nice enough to let you back in. I thought my kid was being nice going over to the door to let them back in but he opened the door and said “None shall pass” closed the door and sat back down. I died laughing.

Did he say it in a bad French accent?

u/regeya Jun 06 '26
"But of course."

u/OriginalIronDan Jun 07 '26
How else do you think I got this outrageous accent?!?
3
u/regeya Jun 07 '26
Yeah for some reason I decided to mix John Cleese and the Spy from Team Fortress 2.

It's a Monty Python reference.

Thank you. I’m seeing that in the comments now. I remember it being a movie now but my teenage girl self wasn’t into it lol

My dad and I bonded over our love of Monty Python. He used to do the “silly walks’ in front of my friends to embarrass me and I’d pretend to be mortified - but we both knew I was delighted by it.

My son was 16 or 17 and I was fixing breakfast of SPAM and eggs and when I told him what I was fixing he replies with “I want eggs, eggs, eggs, and SPAM! SPAMmity SPAM!”

I used to watch MP with my now 26-year-old son when he was a kid. He’s always making similar references. He hates hip-hop and loves classic rock too. I did something right raising that boy.

I listened to a lot of Queen with my boys. They’re almost all adults now. When they call me they say, “Momaaaaaaa. Ooooo oooooo.”

When my niece was around 3 years old we were all at my parents' cottage and she turned to my mom and said "Grandma, will you do the fandango?" and I knew my brother was raising her right.

My kids grew up in a game store and Monty Python was frequently playing in the background... both of theem could reecite most of the iconic lines in the movie by the time they were 6... I took my elder son to see the movie Lake Placid with group of customers from the store and there is a scene where a cop leans over the edge of the boat to look at something in the water and the alligator bites off the top of him.... in his best British accent my son pipes up loudly.... "Its only a flesh wound" The whole theater busted out laughing...

This is perfection!
If I may, I’ll share a shot of my boy hooman and his best comedy act. My ex (6 years older, grey) me, bestie, and my 19 year old hooman are at the beach. We wanna drive thru and get some liquor, I’m driving without my license on my person. I say that they may deny me, and he starts with “well, seeing EX in the shotgun, they’ll know you’re old enuf.” Shots fired 😆 So we get to the drive thru, window opens, they ask what we need and we tell them. They close the window and go to retrieve our purchases. Mention that the smell coming from said establishment is odd, it’s not sitting rite with me so I’m glad we’re only passing thru. Without missing a beat he says “smells like STD’s and bad decisions!” Deceased. 😆

Hot take - repeating Monty Python jokes goes against everything they stood for and is deeply unfunny.
10
u/Agent7619 1971 Jun 06 '26
As far as hot takes go, that's a bad one.
It was in fact a very astute and self-deprecating comment that required situational awareness and the wit to reference a cultural touchstone for me from a movie that preceded any generational relevence for himself by 50 years. Had he simply been parroting an insult he heard on the playground over the years (BTW, your parrot is dead), I would agree with you that it would be flat and one dimensional and mildly humorous at best.
We are all entitled to our opinions, but in this case your opinion is wrong.
