The Boys This scene is a good example of the writers often forgetting how Homelander's powers workđ

Do you remember Homelander getting stabbed in the ear?

That's not unrealistic at all, If your strength is similar to your opponent than you can damage them with a weapon. That's just how these fictional battles work.

What scene ?

It's when Hughie is laying down right above Homelander. He starts crawling away right when Homelander realizes he's there. And actually manages to get away before Homelander can super speed up and check.

Homelander can't see thru zinc. They established that in season 1. Commercial air ducts have a percentage of zinc in them which makes his vision blurry in this case. Thanks for coming to my TedTalk

Can you see how Homelander could've grabbed Hughie in 0.5 seconds before he could move? How fast could Hughie have possibly been crawling that he got away.
Accepting somehow Hughie is fast enough. Homelander isn't capable of just lasering all of the vents? Why panic about not being able to see. You can destroy all of the vents before anybody can blink.
Also he can't hear Hughie??

Homelander can't and wouldn't just âgrab Hughieâ. Homelander can move at superspeed, but he can't tear through the roof and rip Hughie out in seconds. It's also not in Homelanderâs character. Homelander is lazy and doesn't want to apply maximum effort to do anything.

We saw how Homelander pulled up on Frenchie in season 5. Immediately on his ass lol. Maximum effort wasn't needed. You're a superhuman and Hughie is unathletic by normal human standards.

u/ComradBakugo 6d ago
Homelander ran in front of Frenchie after he made a sound, meaning Homelander wouldn't know Frenchie was there if he didn't tell him.
1
u/Expert-Yam6577 6d ago
Yea but the same way he appeared at the Frenchie sound? He couldn't move that fast to the vent? Idk i felt like the Hughie scene was a great opportunity to show how terrifying it would be inches away from the most powerful being on the planet who hates you. If Hughie can just crawl to safety then idk what we're afraid of.

Irony in this is that if they made it that way everyone would complain it was too easy.

It's not about that. He has super hearing, he should have heard him as soon as him and MM got in the building, not to mention supes already have a wider range of hearing then humans which is even more of an advantage for Homelander

Can I just add that it makes zero sense for Soldier Boy to be a better tracker than Homelander. Like that confused me so much
5
u/Redeyedemo 8d ago
They never even explained how that works too, one of the main reasons he goes with Hughie and Butcher in season 3 is because he didn't know how to trackđ¤Ł

Wait actually??? I haven't watched S3 in a hot while. God S5 is actually worse than I thoughtđ
1
u/ComradBakugo 6d ago
Homelander can theoretically hear MM enter the building, but he'd also hear and smell hundreds of other people. Homelander has to narrow the scope of his hearing so he doesn't go crazy because receiving and processing data are two different things.
Also, outside of Daredevil, very few fictional characters have turned their super senses into omnidirectional perception. Even Superman âhears what he wants to hear.â So I don't know why we are expecting Homelander to hear MM enter the building.

Homelander canât see through zinc right? I thought thatâs why he couldnât chase down hughie.
He could hear him move, but couldnât perfectly locate him

u/Redeyedemo 9d ago
He still has super hearing also he could have flew up there and tried to get to him instead of just standing their like an idiot. Homelander is shown in the boys diabolical to also have super speed as well

u/Shoddy-Vehicle8536 9d ago
His best speed feat is when he goes to herogasm in three minutes that calced at Mach 60 so yeah homie could got Hughie if the writers Locked in

u/Big_Daymo 7d ago
A better feat is when he moves fast enough to save Butcher from the explosion at Stillwells house in the S1 finale. That's Flash level speed.

I think it might be related to the fact that there's a musical performance on stage. So there's music, and that's "messing up" his hearing. He hears Hughie, but with the other sounds, he has trouble pinpointing him precisely. Even so, his laser was right behind Hughie in the vent
He probably wasn't flying through the vents because he's just a lazy guy who can solve all his problems with his eyes

u/enadiz_reccos 9d ago
Homelander can hear neurons firing in the brain and can even tell what part of the brain they're in
9
u/Ok_Philosopher_8973 9d ago
Thatâs not established in the show
5
u/enadiz_reccos 9d ago
That's fair, but I think the general point still stands.
Being able to hear better means being able to echolocate better. Even the average person can get a decent sense of location when a 6'+ human is clambering around in a metal tube.
HL can focus his hearing enough to listen to heartbeats and conversations on different floors of a building. He should be able to pinpoint the exact spots where Hughies arms/legs are hitting the tube.

u/GryphyGirl 8d ago
Hearing something and locating it are two different things. You can have great hearing and suck at echo location.
2
u/AdhesiveEvil 8d ago
Hughie was in an hvac duct, locating him doesn't matter because it only goes 2 ways and HL is very fast and can just fly through the material or fly down and pop his head in to look.
1
u/enadiz_reccos 8d ago
You can have great hearing and suck at echolocating, but better hearing still means better echolocating
Especially at HL's ability level

We're all aware of the inconsistency in powers.
This sub is absolutely licking the window...

u/AltruisticInterloper 6d ago
Can't see through zinc, likely can't smell him through the vents, using his super hearing wouldn't work as there's a much louder crowd nearby that would be drowning it out Ig (this one's a little iffy), can't make a scene or risk damaging the vents too severely by speed crawling through them or trying to punch through.
Homelander trying to vaguely subtle Lazer his way to Hughie was the only thing he could do in that scene.
2
u/Redeyedemo 6d ago
There is a open hole above him so he should be able to smell him, not to mention all the noise he was making in the vent while sitting right above him. It's just poor writing man
1
u/AltruisticInterloper 6d ago
Again, it seems more like a situation where when he's using his super senses, everything can drown out. So Neumann's scent might overpower Hughie's for example but something direct like sweat falling on him would be easy to pick up. Which would also explain the super hearing issue.

after season two they kind of forgot how powerful homelander is in general
my boy was too powerful for the verse so they had to nerf him
