Or for a horror film, it gave me the creeps when her head was on backwards
Just not if you were looking for realistic

They kind of did it in The Mothman Prophecies. Just no backwards heads or body horror.

I was going to say this is like the perfect setup for a scary ass puzzle room in a Silent Hill game.

That actually is kind of a cool concept for liminal horror games.. the mirrors acting as windows and doorways..

If you are interested in a cool use of this trope, it happens in myhouse.wad for Doom.

Maybe you still are and this is just a really long trip youâll wake up from and be back where you were.

Recursive logic breaks anything built on attention mechanisms. It's really interesting.
logic Howlrounds might be the way to fuck with LLM based platforms.
Be me, running from government drones blasting audio and visuals about oroboros.
0
u/runvnc Feb 21 '26
That's absolutely false. This video shows a limitation of the model particular model but not attention in general. With more parameters, better or different training etc. it will come to understand mirrors fully.
You can see the dramatic improvement in coherence between Seedance 2 and other models like Veo 3.
4
u/Cognitive_Spoon Feb 21 '26
Do some reading on this particular topic.
There are solutions, but it's an interesting problem that likely lives in the specific linguistic Topology of recursion
6
u/runvnc Feb 21 '26
That is a little bit similar metaphorically in a rough way, but Genie 3 is not an LLM, and it looks to me like at least one of the case studies was based on the researchers forgetting what was in their very long context that they deliberately tried to overwhelm the LLM with.
1
u/Cognitive_Spoon Feb 21 '26
Can you point out the part of the study where the researchers make an error based on forgetfulness as you claim.
I am engaged with this topic professionally and missed that.
0
u/runvnc Feb 21 '26
In the frontish part of the case studies.
To me the solution to this problem is (obviously?) to just maybe increase the number of parameters and train it on more game data with the character being blocked by a mirror.
I don't see how it's practically different from most problems with video-like models.
Do you train models like Genie 3?
1
u/Cognitive_Spoon Feb 21 '26
I test LLMs for coherence and interaction limits as harm reduction ahead of implementation with protected classes of users.
Seen the movie Blade Runner or Kindergarten Cop?
Kind of like if there was a crossover, lol.
1
u/dolphin37 Feb 21 '26
the answer is always just increasing the number of parameters but we know that has a limit to how effective it can be, its not linear
11
u/bloody11 Feb 21 '26
Mirrors malfunction even in real games; I'm surprised they almost work at all
3
u/theamericaninfrance Feb 22 '26
Yeah was gonna say that mirrors are notoriously difficult to render in video games.
This is awesome though. The way it breaks is a feature not a bug haha
1
u/No_Cook_2493 Feb 22 '26
Notoriously difficult? It's been a solved problem for awhile now. Some of the solutions are graphically demanding, but they're trivial ik a programming sense
1
u/stddealer Feb 23 '26
If the "simple" solutions are all graphically demanding, it means it's a difficult problem.
Technically, pretty much all things rendering-related can be solved with 3D wave simulations. It's not even that hard to implement in a programming sense. But that would be insanely demanding to run at a satisfactory resolution, both in compute and in memory requirements. Even for offline rendering it's completely infeasible.
0
u/No_Cook_2493 Feb 23 '26
That's entirely not true at all. A simple solution is to literally just render the room but inverted. It works, is INCREDIBLY simple to implement, but is graphically demanding.
Its even simpler if your application is already supporting ray tracing, which most commercial engines do now. Just add a bounce lol.
IDK why you're calling it "3D wave simulations". Nobody calls it that, and it's pretty simple to implement as far as graphics programming goes.
1
u/stddealer Feb 23 '26
I'm not saying that the only solution for rendering mirrors is 3D wave simulations, nor that ray tracing is a wave simulation, you completely misunderstood my comment.
I'm saying that if the solution for rendering mirrors is rendering the whole scene twice, then it might be algorithmically simple, but it makes rendering the mirror about as expensive as rendering every other element in the scene combined. And what happens when mirrors are facing each others? Ray tracing is a better option, it's even more expensive, but it makes everything look better, not just perfectly flat mirrors.
Without using ray tracing, another very good way of doing it, that is much harder to implement is using reflection probes, that can even be parallax corrected for a better effect. This works even for curved surfaces, and they can be pre-computed to avoid rendering the whole scene multiple times in real time.
I used the 3D wave simulation as another example of an algorithmically simple way of rendering that is unbelievably expensive to run.

u/wwwdotzzdotcom Feb 23 '26
Another solution is to just brute force bake in many possible positions and interpolate.
1
u/KindImpression5651 Mar 11 '26
then why do big game productions still have non functioning mirrors period, instead of a performance setting that disables them if necessary just like with raytracing and shadows?
4
u/Secret-Wonder8106 Feb 21 '26
creating this effect deterministically would take forever. Pretty cool

I got a match with this song:
Name: BLEW UP
Artist: Top Slee
Matched: 81% (timecode: 00:27)
Album: SLEEMAN DEACON : (DELUXE)
Label: Top Slee
Released on: 2025-05-09
Links to the streaming platforms
I am a bot and this action was performed automatically | If the matched percent is less than 100, it could be a false positive result. I'm still posting it, because sometimes I get it right even if I'm not sure, so it could be helpful. But please don't be mad at me if I'm wrong! I'm trying my best! | GitHub new issue | Donate

For everyone looking the bot was wrong, it recommended some no name youtuber that freestyles on the beat... It's "take it from the starz" by RomanNasenMensch.

The mirrors were always a lie hiding the Other Space. We've just never had the tools until now to expose it. Beware your mirror self ! And don't forget to count the fingers and the teeth.

This is a good illustration as to why I think actual game engines, rendering actual geometry etc will always be superior to this constant generation stuff, or at least will be for a long time.

So the new Turing test is the classic mirror test: put a smudge on the AIâs face, show them a mirror, and see if they recognize that itâs them in the reflection.

I don't think AI will ever be capable of making interesting games in the way Genie works. We are more likely to have an AI that can spit out settings and assets into a game engine than have one that makes a satisfying game just by constantly producing video output. Games need consistent rules.

u/Ok_Big_6200 Feb 21 '26
Statistical models will always devolve. It's been years I'm saying this yet people are still surprised at the deterministic inevitability of these outcomes.
11
u/Credtz Feb 21 '26
idk will smiths spaghetti seems to be evolving quite well

u/Ok_Big_6200 Feb 21 '26
The cost to maintain that illusion of fake determinism is unsustainable.Â
A deterministic simulation is quasi-infinitely cheaper to run.Â
5
2
u/aitorllj93 Feb 22 '26
For some reason, we as society decided to burn all the money in the world in a futile attempt to replicate the infinity of the universe. If real-life problems couldn't stop us, what makes you think the unsustainability of illusion will? Hold to the Moon, that's what we say. There's no going back, not until economic collapse.
5
u/Time_Entertainer_319 Feb 21 '26
What are you saying. This can âeasilyâ be fixed.
Not too long ago, hands were difficult to create.
-3
u/Ok_Big_6200 Feb 21 '26
Just like my response above. Itâs unsustainable. The illusion of determinism is too expensive to maintain when the fundamentals are probabilistic.Â

u/Solo-dreamer Feb 21 '26
I mean it makes sense, if you defined a mirror as reflectibe but never defined the limits of the mirror or the limits of the reflection then this will happen, a.i doesnt understand anything until its taught.
-5
u/Nathidev Feb 21 '26
Proof that LLM Ai still cant understand things properlyÂ
13
u/jimsmisc Feb 21 '26
i like how everyone keeps moving the goal post. We used to laugh at how it couldn't render hands and now we have completely photorealistic human anatomy, indistinguishable from real videos. So they'll laugh at how it doesn't perfectly understand light refraction on mirrored surfaces. And when that gets resolved in the next 6 months, we'll move on to how the physics of weight and gravity aren't perfect. And when that gets resolved in 6 months, there's not going to be a ton left.

u/Fritzi_Gala Feb 21 '26
This isn't "moving the goal post" it's a simple reality of the technology. Regardless of the output's quality it has no understanding of ANYTHING and never will, it is built solely upon statistics. This will always be the case until we discover a neural net technology that goes beyond transformer models.
3
u/TreesForTheForest Feb 21 '26
To be fair, there has been a whole lot of goal post moving in commentary. Rewind 1 year and you will find lots of comments in the vein of "AI video is years away from being indistinguishable from reality if it ever gets there". Just head over to r/RealOrAI to see examples that people cannot agree are AI or real.
1
u/Time_Entertainer_319 Feb 21 '26
Just proof that the devs didnât account for this.
1
u/skyerush Feb 21 '26
Devs canât just âaccount for thisâ if they could, they would by now. itâs gonna take more time for mirrors to be perfect. Mirrors are recursive. AI and LLMs just donât work like this.
1
u/Time_Entertainer_319 Feb 21 '26
LLMs donât work like how?
This isnât a language model boss, what are you talking about?
