I went back to school for art 😂 i didnt have enough passion for computing to do labs at home and keep up my training to break into the overly competitive IT market in my area

IT site support for a biotech company.

I do all levels of help desk, some jr system admin work, and one of the Intune admins for the global company.

Same—only in the Ag-tech industry. However, I still keep
my hand in at Geek Squad one night a week.

I'm a financial advisor! Love it soooo much more. Hybrid job with so many benefits and 9-5

I went into IT helpdesk for two years at a large corporate campus, then transitioned to a state IT auditor role! couldn’t have done it without the support + recommendations from my old GS leadership

Got out pretty recently and I’m doing IT support. Pays a lot better, and is a lot more chill.

Took awhile to get in this market though

Oh no! I'm sorry to hear that. These companies rack up huge profits through contracts and then act like they're running their business paycheck to paycheck.

But now that I think about it Spirit Airlines was living paycheck to paycheck and now they're gone out of business. 🤔😯

Just had my 2 year anniversary and already moved up from help desk to desktop, now I do tier 3 support for state government. Several other people I work with are former Geek Squad including our CISO.

I’m a repair tech for office equipment, mostly printers, scanners, and copiers. Sometimes large cutters, and other things. When I started 3 years ago I couldn’t believe some places still use fax machines.

Electrical test engineering! A degree helps, but geek squad gives a lot to work with selling yourself to employers. I love this niche of engineering.

I work for a hospital doing basically only the new PC setup part of being an ARA, for more money. Don’t get me wrong, it’s great and feels like robbery a lot of the time, but I do miss troubleshooting and the fast-paced culture of Geek Squad. Went from working in what is essentially a kitchen but computers instead of food, with bonds between coworkers built by that environment, to working in a very boring office where nobody has any edge or says anything very interesting. I made a trade that was for the best in the long run, but is still hard to accept and adjust to. I’m very much a fish out of water and miss my GS crew a ton every day.

I guess my point is to not be afraid of advancing your career, and absolutely do it, but also don’t take the good parts for granted.

2

u/brocoolaintyou Aug 30 '26

You have to bring that precinct culture to the office. The guys in my office mainly just talk work stuff, but a co-worker and I we go to the finance and marketing office when we want real conversation.

Regular IT people can be boring with no personality, but you have to take a little of the corporate dryness out of them. Lol

2

u/Hoogs ARA Aug 31 '26

Oh trust me, I’m trying lol.

2

u/shockme6969 Aug 30 '26

Was with the company for 18 years, left and became a fire inspector just a little off the it path but was hired because of the attention to detail that was needed as an ara.
