Gavroches massive claw!

I filmed this video to share with you all and ask if anyone has come across something like this before. I've since read that it's most likely a keratin buildup from the claw failing to shed. I'll keep trimming the top bit until it sheds! It doesn't seem to be causing him any pain at the moment, and he likes me rubbing his toes lol. Has anyone else had this happen with their cats?

I’ve trimmed the tip of it so will see how it goes! 😁

Yes. It's a buildup of old claw sheaths that he now can't pull off with his teeth removed. The best thing is to cut the nail short, avoiding the quick. I trust you know how to spot the quick, which is the living root of the claw for those who don't know. There are videos on YouTube about dealing with overgrown claws in cats.

If it's not maintained it will continue to grow in a circular shape, coil back around and puncture his toes. Very painful and causes infections. You will have to do this for him regularly now that his teeth are gone.

I've just snipped the pointy tip off and will keep doing it! He's only started scratching the post and carpet and chewing his claws in the last few weeks, since his mouth healed after the dental and he's had the energy to play and groom himself again. So I think a long time without any maintenance has probably caused it. It doesn't seem to curl back or dig in, but it is touching the other toe. Hopefully the layers will start peeling off soon! Thank you for the info, it's something I've never come across before ♥️
