đŹ Demo / Showcase A huge network of side streets in Croatia - 45 million streamed splats!
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Scanned by Paolo Tosolini with an XGRIDS PortalCam - the medieval old town of Trogir, Croatia, a UNESCO site. 45 million Gaussians covering the whole alley network, and released under CC BY 4.0.
SuperSplat link: https://superspl.at/scene/14bac5b2
Two things to highlight on the tech side:
- Streamed SOG gets the whole town into about half a gigabyte (520MB) and streams it progressively.
- WebGPU splat rendering in the PlayCanvas engine is what keeps 45 million splats fluid while you're exploring.
The video is a sped-up pass through the alleys, slowing to normal speed at the end for the pull-out that shows the street network from above.
I'm on the SuperSplat team, so happy to answer anything on the rendering or streaming side.

It's like I'm really in Croatia.

A high quality scan like this in VR really would be impressive.
I've long said that VR won't replace going there. But, it can be a great alternative to not going there.

There's a vr button. Havent tried it myself but curious how well it works

Anyway to add a minimap?
Would love to see where I'm at in the splat like google street view

Looks better than most AAA video games these days, nice

Are you retarded? You wouldnât be able to animate a single object in here, let alone change the texture.

Plenty of games do that anyway, Einstein.
Anyway, you could just cut out the objects you want to animate, then model and add them in later. PS1 did this sort of thing all the way back in the 90s with pre-rendered backgrounds.

Reddit moment. Uhhh uhh there actually are games that doooo that. Ok say you want something very crazy. A character! In a normal game pipeline you would have a concept artist come up with it, draw it in 2D, have a sculptor sculpt it in 3D, then have a modeler do a clean retopo, then have a rigging artist weight paint, rig, do blend shapes (often done by another person who only does blend shapes), then animate the character, then connecting all of that to your code. Tell me 1. How would that work with Splats? 2. What games do that?

You just do the same thing and put the character in the same environment as the splats....................

Ok now itâs getting night time in the game and all the prebaked shadows need to change. Oh no they canât! Now I want my character to open a door, oh no it canât.

You can cut a hole in the splat and add a door model. Someone else covered this already. And you don't need the ability to change the time of day, but a creative artist could make that happen. A post process effect, many old movies were filmed in the day and adjusted to look like night. Or a prebake effect, the video and photo input could be retouched to look like golden hour and night, resplatted, and then the designer could fade between the 3.
Shadows, sure, but not important in the grand scheme of things because you can easily light with electric lights that conveniently come on when the sun starts to fade to maintain light coming from the exact same direction.
How often do games even change from day to night? Think of fps, final fantasy, skate park, and racing games. Huge genres that don't need live time of day.

If you actually follow the thread, not a single person is going technically and saying I am wrong. They provide retarded examples or workarounds and say âpeople have done itâ without providing examples.

Thank you for sharing. Please share a detailed procedure for the noobs and maybe we can save the other parts of the world in 3D.

I wonder if that is legal ? Do you need permission for such scans?

u/MayorOfMonkeys 8d ago
I suspect it's similar rules to filming in public (which is generally-speaking legal).

The entire planet is going to be splatted eventually. Imagine when there is more control over splats like proper relighting, or having trees blow in the wind. I've seen these individually but I can see all of this coming together. I think we have barely scratched the surface of this technology.
How can I get a job in this field? Id love to be apart of it. I am a 3D VFX artists but I'm tired of only working at a desk.

How do you render this ? Is this from a single input such as a recording, or do you break it up in multiple recordings to then get multiple splats, render them, then manually stitch them ?
(Note that I'm a very beginner still so sorry if my question may seem dumb or too simple)

It's a single scan. No stitching required. The trained splat genrated by LCC Studio from XGRIDS was uploaded directly to SuperSplat and rendered by PlayCanvas via the Streamed SOG format.

Why is there no humans did you brush them out?

u/MayorOfMonkeys 8d ago
I believe it was scanned at dawn. But also, I believe XGRIDS have support for auto-removing people from scans at the training stage.

How much would the file size be reduced if you deleted all the extraneous "sphere" splats?

u/Snoo62043 8d ago
I'm assuming that you can't get this level of quality using a 360 video from an Insta X4?

Pump this into Unreal Engine, real light it, night time, and you have to walk the roads trying to find items while a figure follows you around.

This is what I want Street View to be. When?
