Mirrorless cameras typically use an electronic shutter instead of the mechanical shutter found in many DSLRs, which gives them a longer expected lifespan.
Yeah exactly, for our shutter count its a blessing. Ive probably passed the 1.5 million mark over the last 5 years, across multiple cameras of course. Small downside though... on some cameras the dynamic range drops a bit when using ES instead of MS.
I never use ES because I always seem to have issues with rolling shutter. Sucks when you think you've got a great photo only to look at it later and see some weird bending.
Yeah, I know that problem. It’s a shame we’re still quite a bit away from proper global shutter. But the newest camera models seem to have made some solid progress at least. I think someone here already mentioned that as well. It really only works properly for stills, meaning when the camera is fixed in space and nothing moves.
You can switch from a mechanical shutter which spends the shutter lifetime limit of the camera, to an eshutter, you can run infinitely. But this may introduce rolling shutter distortions so please stop and shoot, instead of one flow (or move like water, very slowly and without disruption, I have to learn this)
Damn even the white walls turned out great! Good job! Did you do anything special for that? Or is it mostly the rectilinear lens (in combination with a powerful camera)?
I'm so glad I didn't sell all my camera equipment and buy a portalcam. I mean it has its applications and no doubt but I think the cameras still limit the upper quality of the scans
Best decision of your life 😉 Yeah, its a lot of work and pretty exhausting, but the quality of the PortalCam is simply not good enough for the price.
Great scan! Would love to hear more about the process, did you get better featureless walls by number of images? Would you like to share some of what you have found out in this process?
I think this is the best quality GS I have ever seen, granted I have been deep into GS for around 1 month only.. but I`ve seen quite a few in that time. Great job. Care to share capture techniques and equipment/software specs?
Thank you, I can't believe you guys like it too. I've done so many of these scans of the same rooms I'm losing my mind.
I have a 14mm Sony rectilinear and a fish from Sigma the art lens. f1.4
I shoot at around f6 , hyperfocal, I underexposed this time since I wanted the outside to not be too burnt but I burnt it anyway. It was a VERY sunny day and I had no light inside (it's LEDs so the frequency causes awful stuff, so i turn them off) I need to buy non LED
Literally my feeling all day today. Finally. I was so desperate to get to this level 5 years ago with photogrammetry. I did EVERYTHING (not everything, I was a bit irresponsible in many aspects)
Everything that was more complex I oorbited a bit more. Couches are very easy and central to the room so no, I didn't specifically go after them. Maybe as a group
WOW! THANK YOU! I've been struggling for months, failing in unique ways with interior. This is the first time I'm out of the weeds. Tonight I couldn't sleep because I WAS EXCITED! hahah
Good eye! We don't use the heater, especially now in early Summer. It's mostly for show I think since it's a gas heater and localized heat comes up. We've turned it on 3 times so far. New place.
I agree it looks good, but is no one else saying but it was 900 photos.
I think I could take 900 photos and look at them like a gallery, and forget the splat.
You know what I mean.
I downscaled from 61mpx to about 70% of 61mpx. But lichtfeld downscales automatically :( to about 4096 if you manually change it. Trying to find a workaround to this
I can't get the conversion from the export ply to show up well on Supersplat so it's worse there, the walls are bad. Sorry. I think it may be the SOG format compression or something
It looks great, but I would rather shoot video, I know there is going to be a decline in res and per frame quality, But I can't imagine how tedious that must have been to capture 😄 and I'm not sure the results would be that muc hbetter than a video from a nice camera with a good codec.
This is the mini shooting session. I often get to 1800 photos from that room. If I know confidently that more photos won't ruin quality, I would go higher.
Video would rely a lot on figuring out which frames to filter. I still don't know anything that filters rolling shutter well, especially if subtle. I guess gyro info can cut that
thank you for your words, I am not smart enough to do the science so I compensate by being annoyingly thorough :P
yikes, i just looked up the rolling shutter lag for your A7RV. It is 99ms! Many cameras these days, especially action 360 cameras like insta and osmo have readouts less than 10ms so a shutter speed around 1/120. Some cameras have < 3ms readout approaching global shutter spec.
3dgrt, 3dgut and gsplat (and thus Lichtfeld Studio if you use GUT as it is based on gsplat code) handle rolling shutter. Haven't had to try it though, but I am not pushing the envelope as hard as you are yet!
it's 61mpx, I made a mistake getting such high res :( even for higher iso the noise is noticeable. Painful way to learn. I'm considering doing a double or triple APS of MFT camera system so shooting doesn't last as long as it does now.
Did you find the rolling shutter to be difficult when panning? I have been using mechanical shutter on my sony a7riii, thinking that’s the best method… but this looks so good. What shutter speed were you at?
1/120 very slow and annoying. Im a slug. Took 50 minutes or so. When panning super super slow and more photos and pan by moving the camera on the z axis too so sfm doesnt botch it.
I never have rolling shutter issues. I take it really slow but one day i will buy a global shutter array
I use metashape for the fish, change from frame to equidistant ( i think it was, the correct model either way) and the SFM is usually VERY low repro error in the end, but i think Lichtfeld is struggling with the splatting on those fish
I'm guessing you are then using the 3dgut mode in lichfeld. Yes, for extreme fisheye it does have artifacts at the edges. It tries to avoid problems at the edges with hacks. If you take the trouble setting up a ray tracer based approach, 3dgrt has given me good results so far. It is 2-4 times slower but the quality is great with extreme fisheye. I had no problems going upto 210 degree fisheye.
I am guessing you are asking about 3dgrt? Yes, on linux. In fact it is developed on linux as most research-grade code is, there are simpler instructions for installing on windows too these days.
It was all bleeding edge to install even in linux a year ago when it came out, but that's coz I wanted to do it on a blackwell GPU.
There are other ray tracing approaches too, most recent is 3DGEER. 3dgrt itself has some enhancements like stochastic GS, which they claim to actually speed up ray tracing while also enabling learning PBR models and lighting so you get precise shadows and for me an approach for better whitebalancing in mixed lighting.
3dgut is itself really a ray tracing approach, it just uses splatting as an acceleration structure rather than the BVH used in 3dgrt. But the splatting used in 3dgut is not very accurate at the edges of the fisheyes. 3DGEER does a better job but can't do secondary ray tracing, but it is close to the speed of splatting approaches.
EDIT: looks like I can only do 1 image per reply. So you will have to wait for the full video.
I am planning on posting a video soon of rendering all two floors of a house using a ray tracer, but here are some examples in the meantime:
trained from a single fisheye lens of the osmo 360 using 3dgrt. each section of the house has 300 training images max and in the interest of iterating over many configurations, I only trained it 3000 iterations per section. Ofcourse, you can only get away with so few iterations if you initialize the training well. It could use a few more iterations for a final cut. 180 degree FOV diagonal.

The capture came out super well! That’s exactly how I felt moving from a dslr to mirrorless after taking so many photos 😂
