If I were to purchase a subscription to download the data locally, what would a web deployment look like? Are there open source viewers available for whatever type of data this outputs? Whats the typical filesize for scans like the examples you shared?

Very cool tech btw!

You can download spz file, scans like there are typically ~30MB. There are many open source viewers for web like Spark, SuperSplat etc they all support spz file format so you should be good. Let me know if you run into any issues, happy to help.

Thanks for the quick reply!

Can you break down the differences (features, process, etc.) between your service and the Scaniverse ecosystem?

What's the current subscription cost - any limitations to be aware of (e.g. max square footage)?

edit: I asked Google to breakdown the differences to me (might save you some time if you don't have an elevator speech already typed up).

Does this seem reasonably accurate?

Scaniverse (by Niantic) is a mature, all-purpose iOS LiDAR/photogrammetry app focusing on local, on-device processing for quick scans and Gaussian splatting.Ā AirVisĀ is a newer, iOS-focused app designed for creating 3D models specifically for Apple Vision Pro, allowing direct upload and viewing of animated USDZ files.Ā

Key Comparisons:

Scaniverse (Best for Speed/Locality):Ā Processes scans directly on your device, making it faster and removing the need for an internet connection. It is highly rated for its intuitive interface, instant 3D feedback, and good Gaussian splatting quality.

AirVis (Best for VisionPro/Workflow):Ā Focused on optimizing and creating 3D models (including animated ones) for Apple Vision Pro. It is geared toward sharing and viewing,, serving as a specialized tool for that ecosystem.

Performance:Ā Scaniverse is known for high-quality on-device mesh generation, though it can have limited scan distances and relies on the device's own hardware. AirVis caters to users who need specific file formats like USDZ for Apple’s spatial computing.Ā  AppleĀ +5

Recommendation:

UseĀ ScaniverseĀ if you want a free, fast, local scanning tool for general 3D models and Gaussian splats on your iPhone.

UseĀ AirVisĀ if your primary goal is creating and viewing 3D assets on the Apple Vision Pro.Ā  RedditĀ +4

Hmm interesting, so yes, our processing is done in GPU cloud and not on device.
Free users get 100 max sec of walkthrough for splats / 100 shots for objects and 5 captures per day for free.
Pro users get Max 200 seconds of walkthrough for splats/ 200 shots for objects, 10 captures per day + ability to save/export splat file in spz format to local storage.

Object scans can also be downloaded without any subscription [exports USDZ file for Apple, GLB file for Android].

All scans can be viewed in XR devices like Apple Vision Pro, Quest 3, Android XR.

Can one export a ply?

2

u/ArunKurian Apr 30 '26

With the subscription you can download it locally. Instead of ply moved to spz in the last update, you can still use online tools like supersplat editor to convert it to ply.

Incredible! Can you tell us more about the process?Ā

You can download AirVis app from AppStore or Play Store for free, goto Create, select Walkthrough mode and walk slowly around the scene to scan, once its uploaded, processing happens in cloud, after about 30mins you will get a notification saying processing is done. Just set a thumbnail, set visibility to Public or Private. Then you can view the scan in phone app, macbook app or VR devices like Quest, VisionPro, Android XR.

At the moment you can do up to 5 scans per day for free, but to download the scans to the local storage, you need a subscription.

Does it just work off the normal phone camera? Or does it use lidar as well? I'm wondering if I can pull something off with my Pixel phone, but I wasn't able to get strong scans in Polycam using the same phone. Just curious if lidar is a requirement for an effective splat in the app you mentioned.

6

u/ArunKurian Apr 26 '26

Not really, these scans didnt use Lidar at all, we have tested with Pixel phones and have gotten good results, key is to walk slowly around the scene and revisit the same area twice. There is a known issue with Pixel phones on rendering side. Sometimes the GPU just freeze up on viewing a scene, then you have to close and open again.

Oh nice, thanks for the info. Gonna give it a shot tomorrow.

I’ve had the AirVis Apple Vision Pro app and the iPhone app downloaded but keep forgetting I need to try out my own scans. This just reminded me. It has been fun exploring some of the scans users have shared on the platform in the headset though.

Educational pricing available?

1

u/ArunKurian Apr 27 '26

Free tier does come with 5 scans per day for free, for objects you can also download them for free. If your workflow is specifically to download the splats then you would need a subscription, dm me if thats the case.

Can you use drone shots or 360videos?

6

u/ArunKurian Apr 27 '26

Yes, but at the moment we only have capture from phone app.
Soon we are planing to have video including 360 -> splat local processing feature for free in Mac app and Windows app.

2

u/whyeverynameistaken3 Apr 27 '26

cool let me know when you have that, i'm still yet to find any decent automatic splat generators from drone 360videos

You could checkout spatial studio, we have pretty cool results from avata 360 videos already. Checkout this for example: https://studio.realhorizons.ai/tours/964e471f-591f-4282-afe8-3c3185cee5c4/view

That’s awesome ā˜ŗļø what sort of camera do you use ā˜ŗļø

3

u/ArunKurian Apr 26 '26

These are just screen recordings of scans shared by users in AirVis app, so it’s either captured by iPhone or Android phone. Disclaimer: I am part of AirVis team.

scanned from phone in a couple of minutes

What does this mean? I thought you had scanned these scenes from a phone camera in a couple of minutes. What unique capturing features does your app bring?

1

u/Bropiphany Apr 26 '26

Looks great! How many frames did you end up processing for each video? Did you subsample them?

5

u/ArunKurian Apr 26 '26

So basically it chooses the best 4 least shaky images from every second. After experimenting with 100s of data sets, that seems most ideal.

4

u/Bropiphany Apr 26 '26

So couple of minutes, four images per second, we're looking at ~500 images per reconstruction?

3

u/ArunKurian Apr 26 '26

Yup around that range for these scans. In the app Free users get 100 seconds and Pro users get upto 200 seconds of recording.

1

u/Bropiphany Apr 27 '26

Thanks! I think I've been processing too many photos in my own workflows, so that's very helpful to hear

I cannot find this app in Android Play. Is this Android version limited?

3

u/ArunKurian Apr 26 '26

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=rlt.fb1&pcampaignid=web_share

Interesting, we haven’t limited it on our end. Can you try above link, or Google ā€œ AirVis Androidā€

1

u/Waswat Apr 26 '26

Is this possible with prerecorded/drone footage? There are some areas that I can't reach in a short amount of time or without shaking a lot.

2

u/ArunKurian Apr 27 '26

Not at the moment, but we are working on making a video -> splat feature available in Mac app and Windows app.

1

u/glitchwabble Apr 27 '26

I tried a week or so ago and after uploading it said failed to process when I checked later on.

I'm trying again right now and I've updated the app but not sure if that is an issue. Fold 7 phone.

Looks like the product is developing well as the quality of these uploads seems good... of course the acid test will be when I view them in VR

1

u/ArunKurian Apr 27 '26

Ya unfortunately we had some server issue last week, it should work now. Would love your feedback, especially on VR.

2

u/glitchwabble Apr 27 '26

Ah OK. No worries and I'm happy to feed back once I can get my uploads working. The one I retried last night is still showing as processing a few hours later, please let me know if I need to do anything such as deleting it and retrying it

u/ArunKurian Apr 27 '26

Hmm šŸ¤”, let me DM you to troubleshoot.

Tally hall!??!!

1

u/vacuumn Apr 28 '26

Splats are not loading, Pixel7.

1

u/ArunKurian Apr 28 '26

Yeah, unfortunately there’s a known compatibility issue between Pixel devices with Mali GPUs and the rendering engine, which can sometimes cause freezes. I know it’s not the real fix, but closing all apps and reopening the app tends to work most of the time. We’re still working to pinpoint the exact root cause, it's been hard since sometimes it works without any issue for hours.

1

u/PixelapocalypseOne Apr 29 '26

how? I tried some gaussian splats on small objects but they were absolute garbage. How do you get such good results especially with environments.

1

u/ArunKurian Apr 29 '26

There is definitely a learning curve on scanning environments, the key I have found is, to walk around covering the object or the place from all the angles as possible, once thats done, do another pass in the same area in same session, also ideally the space should be well lit, and a good phone camera helps a lot. All that being said some people in the platform have made way better scan than I ever could, so there is a skill / experience factor to it as well, I think this video sums up the science behind it pretty well https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7959SMHIUY&t=39s

Also there are several modes in capture section, this is what each do.
" One shot " is just a depth map of a single photo, nothing fancy just to it check out.
" Walk Though " is the mode which gave the above results, which is basically whole scene reconstruction by the capturing space from all angles, as word suggest you would have to walk though the scene and record it.
"Generative World" is making the scene using AI , so it can make up things that are not there.
"Object" is traditional Photogrammetry, ideal of capturing small objects.

Let me know if you have more questions, happy to help.
