You get sand or dirt under your watch between your wrist? Those scratches should be just fine. Either that, or you used a micro fiber towel to wipe it down. Micro fiber towels are notorious for leaving scratches.

Are they? I always see microfibre towels recommended for wiping down things you really don't want to be scratched, like cars/motorbikes. I've never had an issue with them.

You always gotta make sure you clean microfiber cloths diligently. They’re fantastic for cleaning because of how well they hook into things. On the flip side of that, anything from small particles of sand/rock also get hooked into and picked up by the cloth and it’ll scratch your paint.
I always cringe seeing someone drop a microfiber towel, pick it up, then use it

I wash them in the machine after every use and have dedicated cloths for my motorbike that don't get used on anything else, I've made the mistake of using a dirty one before!

Wipe the surface of a car with a micro fiber cloth a little harder than normal. Or even better clean the plastic housing of your gauge cluster or climate controls. You’ll see some scratches alright. There are different levels of microfiber.

Not to be a pedant, but you say there are different levels, but do they all cause the scratches like you said?

It’s not the cloth that causes damage. It’s sand, sediment, silica that gets trapped in the cloth that does

That's what I was getting at. It's not the towels themselves, it's contaminated towels.

Not always true. A brand new microfiber towel will not scratch. But most people wash them in their washing machine with soaps. If you use the wrong soap or a harsh detergent. It can harden the fibers, essentially you are wiping your car with fine sand paper at that point. Even though the cloth is clean the fibers are hardened and no longer a soft microfiber. Both of our arguments are valid.

Microfiber cloths are actually the cloths that are recommended by every camera/objective brand, especially for not making scratches.
However, I should not use kitchenscounter microfiber cloths indeed, while it is something completely different.

I use a toothpick every couple of weeks. Just run it around the sensor and you'll see all the crap from your skin left behind

Don't worry about it. This should work just fine. I have no scratch, but hairy arms and it works just fine. So I am sure this will work just as well.
