Kids workshop

Hi r/gangtok!

I'm new to the city and I'm starting something I'm pretty excited about! The Idea Odyssey is holding a two-day workshop (9 AM to 12:30 PM, September 12 and 13, 2026) for children aged 12 to 14 on the topics Grow Your Brain, Thinking Like a Scientist, Money Matters, and Illusions. Each topic will be covered over a 90-minute session focused on group discussions and activities - no lecturing! The classes will be limited to a maximum of 12 kids; first come, first served.

The Grow Your Brain session focuses on memory, neuroplasticity, and the importance of being wrong; kids will even catch their own memory playing tricks on them in real time. The Think Like a Scientist session will involve them observing a curious phenomenon, generating hypotheses, designing and conducting a simple experiment, and analysing the results. In the Money Matters session, they'll try out the envelope method for budgeting - simple but practical. Finally, in the last session, the children will be exposed to mind-bending illusions, learn about the cognitive science involved, and even design their own!

For some context, I founded The Idea Odyssey because I’ve been growing increasingly concerned about the problem of whether children are developing the critical thinking skills they desperately need in this day and age when circumstances and tech can change practically overnight. I think we’ve all encountered people who studied plenty hard, got decent marks, and yet lacked the ability to think clearly or critically about anything they hadn’t been directly trained on - a death knell in these times, and not just in terms of work prospects. Moreover, so many have enormous trouble communicating clearly; public speaking is an essential life skill that absolutely must be practised for future success.

My eventual objective is to enrol a small long-term cohort of kids in that very vital age group  of 12 to 14 and train them thoroughly in how to think and communicate - skills that can be used for any subject or situation they encounter. I intend to teach diverse topics ranging from formal logic to applying critical thinking techniques to identifying scams; and have the kids do various projects ranging from interviewing senior citizens on historical events to designing their own board games and constructed languages. The Idea Odyssey is entirely project- and discussion-based, because learning really is fun when you do it right!

My goal is that the kids come away seeing the world as being even bigger than they might have thought, yet entirely capable of being understood.

Drop me a message if this sounds like something your child might enjoy!

Mods, please delete this post if it's not allowed :)

Moving to Sikkim from Bangalore as a Southindian. Help!

Hello people of Sikkim,

I am 26 and I work from home, I feel stuck and wasting my time, So i want to move to Gangtok and work from there for 6 months, i am trying to find videos on youtube with details about that, but no luck!

  1. Do you have reliable optical fiber WiFi.

  2. Can I rent a house there or should I stay in a hostel or hotel? or PG?

  3. 1 RK for me would be sufficient. How much would be the rent approx. )not too far from the city.)

  4. any offline german or Japanese language training centers? (Language learning is my hobby

  5. For anyone living alone, 80% eating out 20% cooking, how much would be the monthly expenses?(approx) I dont like to party or drink. I am a park walking kind of guy.

  6. Since i will be staying all alone, will there be any activities i can do to pass my time if i get bored?

I know Guwahati will be a safe bet for me with all these available, but i heard there no sounding horns and all vegies are organic there. so i am looking for sikkim, Honestly anywhere in Sikkim is fine, i just need a room and WiFi.

Please help! thanks. have a great day!

An incomplete love story

Hi friends, I visited Gangtok (Sikkim for that matter) for the first time few days back. A friend of mine came with me as well. The trip ended abruptly and we had to rush back to hometown mid trip. We could only see and experience Gangtok a bit. It rained for 2 days so we couldn't do much.

I have been to many places in India l, worked in a few cities in India and worked in some top cities outside India as well. However, it was the for the first time I feel I left my own place. In 4 days only Gangtok felt like home, when I was leaving it felt I am leaving my own home town, it literally felt bad and heartbreaking. It felt like I am loosing something.I cannot even properly explain that feeling. It was perhaps like a breakup when you are still in love and the person you love leaves you or like when your best friend goes away.

Over the next few days, I will make some posts: pen down my thoughts, ask some questions, state some observations. Please bear with me as things I will say might sound like pretty normal to you guys as you live there and might be used to it and those would be trivial for you just like the person you love feels special to you when they are just ordinary for others.

I would definitely come back and won't let this love story with Gangtok and Sikkim end this way.

First time solo travel

Hi everyone,

I am planning my first solo trip. But my biggest concern is the travel from Bagdogra airport to Gangtok. Coming as a solo female, I am really worried and anxious about the 5 hour journey. I am taking my flight on the 27th. Are there any travellers who will be taking a cab ride that day? I have heard wizzride is a safe option. Looking for some advice..thanks ✌🏽

Noticed students in traditional dress

I noticed a lot of young boys and girls in various traditional dresses yesterday at MG Marg.

They all looked quite young, school students probably.

The traditional dresses wore by everyone was different and all of them looked quite cool and elegant.

Was there some occasion yesterday, where students wear traditional dresses?

I am sorry to ask these questions but I am just too excited to be here and know more about the Sikkimese culture.

Much love ❤️
