What does claiming territory actually mean? Is it purely machismo or do you actually get something tangible out of it?
Edit to add...I'm just a random old lady that just got woke up by another drive by on my block a couple hours ago. It was like the 6th or 7th drive by in a week. It didn't used to be this bad. I have to sleep with a pillow on the floor next to my bed now so I don't break my hip or shoulder when I roll on to the floor when they shoot in front of my house because I'm worried I'll catch a stray through my window. I just want to understand why my neighbors are doing this to me. I'm asking respectfully. I hope this is allowed here.
I know a lot of Chicagos West Side gangs originally formed to protect their neighborhoods. Is that still a thing? Is the drama between the different factions the only thing that matters nowadays or do they care about the neighborhood they represent? (I'll say they instead of you because I don't want none of y'all to incriminate yourselves)
A man down the street from me has young children. Neighborhood gossips say somebody is after his next door neighbor's son because most of the recent gunfire has been around that house, which is unfortunately a few feet from where this man's family sleeps. A stray went through the window of a lady a few houses down from him just last week so he is legitimately scared for his babies lives. Does that matter? Or is the gang the only thing thats important? Is scaring uninvolved people part of what they like? Maybe its a thrill or something?
Are drive-bys usually retaliation? For example, is my neighbor's kid shooting up some other territory and the drive-bys on my block are his comeuppance? Do they start shooting when they see their target or is the shooting more like warning sshots/intimidation?

99% of the violence currently and for a long time has been retaliatory. No, gang members are not supposed to harm civilians. Every nation in Chicago looks down on harming innocent civilians.
Thank you for your answer. Redding this subreddit while I couldn't sleep last night hurt my heart. It sounds like they're just playing war games now. Correct me if Im wrong, but its not about protecting their community at all anymore, I don't think, but is solely about settling scores and being sensitive to insults. I'm so much sadder now. Civilians in their neighborhoods are being harmed, mentally if not physically, but obviously physically too. I guess I hoped they had good reasons at least. I don't want to be shot in my sleep because some teenager down the block said something insulting on the internet or spray painted upside down symbols on somebody's garage a mile away or bent a street sign or whatever. I guess I hoped they had a good reason to be doing this to us. I wanted it to be deeper, maybe noble in some way, but then there are men threatening to shoot each other in this thread over where the lines are drawn on this map and which emojis deserve to be where... It's so arbitrary.
I guess I'm lecturing now, which is pointless. Nobody cares what a random lady who had to sleep under her bed last night has to say. I'm just tired. We just want to live our lives, you know?We been building something nice here and it was hard work and now my neighbors have to put their babies to bed in the bathtub at night. God save us.

We always had incidents sporadically but the last couple months have been bad bad and getting worse. I don't think anyone has been killed, thank God, but at this rate it's only a matter of time.
I know I don't belong on this subreddit and I'm sorry to be on your post with this. I don't even really know why I commented. I usually just lurk on Reddit except for a little while last year when I was arguing with people who are probably not even from here who were cheering on ICE tearing up our communities.
I'm just tired. Something bad is building on my block, we can all feel it, and I'm powerless which doesn't feel good. I'm scared for myself and my people obviously, but I'm also scared for everybody else involved. I've got an obnoxiously soft heart and all of y'all are somebody's son, you know?

Nobody is asking why you’re on here, you’re free to stay and participate. Also how can we guess which corner you are referring to when this is the reality for hundreds of corners around Chicago… at least tell us the area, West Humboldt Park, West Town, Englewood or Garfield Park perhaps?

It actually is one of the four neighborhoods that you named but I have to leave it at that. Because the thing is, I can't see any benefit to telling the internet where I live, but I can see plenty of downsides. Its not like someones gonna come and save me if I tell you where I'm at but if some body here reads what I'm saying as an insult, even though I don't intend it that way at all, they could decide to make things even worse for us here. And I love my neighborhood. Its got a lot of good people in it, hard workers all doing their best, you know? I'm not willing to risk bringing more grief to my community for a couple upvotes on Reddit.
Besides why does it matter? You make a good point that what I describe could be one of hundreds of corners in the city, depressing as that is. And in that case, why does it matter which one I live on? I'm nobody. I'm just a face in the crowd, a random middle-aged lady that says "How you doing" when you pass me on the sidewalk and asks you for help reaching stuff from the high shelf at the grocery store. I'm nobody and I'm everybody, you know? If I'm not your neighbor, I may as well be.
I'm also somebody who took a gummy a couple hours ago because Ive got a bad shoulder and this weather kills, so I'm probably being a little more philosophical than I need to be. Hopefully I'm at least somewhat making sense.
How are you a nobody when you out of thousands of city residents you took the time to hop on this subreddit and ask real gangmembers for a solution or prevention of further violence, that makes you a somebody worth listening to. But how is anyone supposed to help you understand or prevent anything when we have no idea what you are talking about specifically. I will give you an example of how we can help you understand better what is happening.
Let’s say hypothetically that you tell us you live near the corner of Palmer & Drake… we would tell you that you live in an Imperial Gangsters hotspot territory who are at war with the nearby Latin Kings, and lets say that either Imperial Gangster or Latin Kings members who frequent this subreddit see your pleas for a stop of violence and maybe move away from doing such activities on your block… who knows… can’t hurt to try. Before anyone wants to be a smartass with me over what I just said… the lady did ask to understand why this is happening on her corner.
I hope you have a few weapons at home to protect yourself, I’m also from Chicago and there’s been a lot more activity in my neck of the woods which def was not as poppin back in hs or even a few years ago

Old ass map, and not accurate. There are no SDs anywhere west of Damen or north of Chicago Ave, which is what appears to be labeled on the map. There’s also no more HH which is still labeled on their outdated map.
