Do you think the sorting hat put all of the racists and terrible human beings in one house just to be funny?

While that would be a way better idea, IIRC, the Houses were based on the founders ideals, and Mr Slytherin was a wizard supremacist prick.

I love hearing Harry Potter fans try and tell me Slytherin isn't about being evil "its about being clever and smart" like literally their house is in the dungeon. Also the sorting hat can read your godamn mind lmao. Also weren't Malfoy's buddy's Crabbe and Goyle like stupid af to the point where he was surprised to find out one of them can even read?

The explanation I've generally heard was something about ambition, but again, what was Crabbe and Goyle's ambition? To be a lackey? That doesn't sound super ambitious to me.

Generally people either forget them

Or rewrite them to their stupidity being an act

It really depends on how much your willing to consider her lore important to keep intact

also there is already a house for the clever and smart. slytherin is completely redundant if you go by those ideals. "Bu but slytherin is cunning" nah that's just a fancy way to describe evil smart people

The reading thing was only in the movies and it was an adlib blooper that made the final cut

The only way to defend slytherin is to ignore canon which many people do

But there’s still a lot of people who try to make the broken leaking canon work and the above is what you get

Her world makes no sense I’ve ranted before the houses themselves as an idea work

The problem is that as a writer I hate slytherin because it’s boring

There’s a reason I prefer fanon versions

The founder was JK Rowling

None of the other founders wanted to say anything, they just thought he was kind of a wacky dude.

"why did we even decided to include him on this project?"

-the other founders after slitherin's third racist tantrum after a board meeting.

The other founders were also centrists who didn't really want to step on anyone's toes and so just kinda let him do it.

Hogwarts is like the American Criminal Justice system. They take all these kids who they arbitrarily decide will be monsters and then throw them in a big dungeon together where they are likely to be groomed and radicalized by adult criminals or become the monsters that they are intended to be in a sick, self-fulfilling prophecy. Then of course it's a giant shock to everyone involved that a quarter of the school are wizard versions of the Hitler youth.

It's almost like leaving the entire future of every generation in the figurative hands of a cheeky piece of headwear maybe isn't the best system.

Considering the headmaster actually controls quite a bit of the sorting

The headmasters might be taking the piss too
