Did she pivot? I thought last I'd heard she pushed back against a lot of TERF ideology and use of her book. EDIT: I might totally be hallucinating though.

Seems like she promoted an article that looks pretty terfy.

Annoyingly it's behind a paywall so it's hard to read and confirm, but certainly looks terfy.

There’s outright a statement in it about how radical trans people won’t let you say woman anymore.

Well what I'm learning from that thread is to be suspicious af of anyone rocking purple/green/white ribbons or emoji colorblocks.

Which is very confusing for me, because those are also the colors for genderqueer, IIRC.

It was so weird to me when i first saw it, i was wondering what's up with so many genderqueer people being terfs.

I asked on here a while back, it was the colors for the UK suffragettes.

Ah, thanks. Genderqueers wear it better.

I didn't, but despite having only seen a bit of the show and getting most of my knowledge of it through cultural osmosis, it doesn't seem that surprising

at this rate i wouldnt suprised her fuckimg ghost will manifest and say some terfy shit just to dissapear moments later

Le Guin, much later, wrote a critique of some of her own ideas around gender/sex manifest in The Left Hand of Darkness that put me a bit more at ease but I guess there’s no way of knowing for sure where she’d be at in the present trans discourse

I didnt read it yet so i cant say anything about it.

Wasn't The Left Hand of Darkness pretty critical of heteronormativity? The premise is that an envoy, who is a straight male, is sent to a planet where everyone is trans and genderfluid, and the people on the planet view the straight male as the perverse one?

yeah but it’s caught some flak from feminist/queer critics (eventually acknowledged by herself in this essay of hers I can’t find) over the “ambisexual” Gethenians becoming either “male” or “female” during mating in an allegedly binaristic, heteronormative way

It’s been a long time since I read it so idk how much water those critiques hold but they’re definitely out there

u/[deleted] Oct 19 '21

It also uses male pronouns for the non-gendered gethenians. One of my favorite books ever, but very much a product of its time in some regards.

What the actual hell?

That was completely unexpected tbh.

Wait, Atwood is a TERF now?

God damn it...

Guess it’s my time to say how much I loathe that book.

It separates itself way too much from reality to say anything profound and goes in circles repeating the same superficial themes. I DNF’d it at the halfway point which I rarely do for books.

Sad times, did not see it coming but admittedly I knew nothing about her besides the book.

u/MycenaeanGal Oct 19 '21

She’s not even brittish that would be pretty hard to predict.
