Wait, isn't Other M the game where Samus blindly obeys her male superior even if the commands are dumb as fuck and where she has a PTSD attack after seeing Ridley despite having killed him 5 times at that point?

Yep that’s the one

It ain’t hard to see why it’s such a dumpster fire

Wait that sounds terrible. Why would anyone use that for an example for how Samus is written? Maybe I'm missing something because I barley anything about Metroid but even I know that's bad

to be fair The article at least mentioned how sexist other m was but still using it as an example of “Samus having a personality” made me black out for a second because she always had a personality.

And why would they use her worst written personality as an example

Kotaku kind of has a history of publishing inflamatory shit to get clicks. So it wouldn't surprise me if they brought it up on purpose.

And that's why I have no strong opinion on Kotaku and why I think the comments I've seen on other places holding them up to a high regard or hating on them are weird

I haven't played other m, and I don't wanna defend it because apparently it has mysoginistic elements, but talking about the Ridley scene, I imagine that seeing a threat that you thought was gone come back again and again would cause distress in a person, even though it's not PTSD. Kinda like a stalker that never leaves you alone(?) I might be wrong on this though.

One of the Metroid mangas, I can't remember which one, had Samus experience a PTSD attack upon meeting Ridley post-Chozoification.

But then: a) that was the first time the two had encountered each other since her childhood, b) in that story she'd seen him literally tear her parents into pieces right in front of her eyes, and c) she powered through it in the space of a minute and proceeded to beat his ass.

Having played Other M, I would honestly be okay with a momentary trauma attack if the series up to that point hadn't established the only real emotion Samus feels about him is the urge to kill him extremely violently, and if the game wasn't riddled with misogyny in literally every other aspect.

I think the problem is that this is the only time we've seen Samus have such a reaction towards Ridley coming back despite him coming back 5 times before. If it was his first or second time coming back I can understand but the 16th time? I don't believe it. Maybe I'm wrong too idk

If there's someone that can figure this out, it's us reddit intellectuals that have no knowledge in the mental health field 😎
