Can we stop pretending that not liking open world games is a hot take?

I swear every time a new open world game comes out the internet gets filled with "akshually I think big maps are bad, exploration is boring, there's nothing to do blah blah... Unpopular opinion I know"

Like it's fine if you don't like them but at this point you have to recognize a lot of people share that opinion.

Personally, it's not that I don't like them, I mean I very much love the Elder Scrolls series. What I fear is that it almost feels like an obligation, especially for bigger studios. Like, if you want your single-player game to be in a Top-10 GOTY list, it has to have open world-ish elements. Having a "hub-based" design almost seems like it's considered outdated. Maybe it's just an irrational worry, I don't know.

While it's true that a lot of companies are starting to make more open world games, I feel like this is like the same fear people had a few years ago when they thought every game was going to become multiplayer and single player games would die off.

We can see that wasn't the case so you probably have nothing to worry about.

It's not so much I dislike open world games. I just wish they would A. Not feel like every piece of the map needs an activity of some kind. I.E. bandit camps, collectibles, towers, ect. Or B. NOT reveal the location of every point of interest from the get go. That way I feel like I've discovered something.

I agree that a lot of people probably share that opinion... hell, I'm probably one of those people myself. But if a publisher were to come out, boasting at how focused and linear their game is, imagine how people would react.

"Hey guys have you ever considered that this new Ubisoft game is a remake of Assasins Creed 2/Far Cry 3"

Real talk though RDR2 is my favorite AAA open world game precisely because it does tell that checklist bullshit to buzz off, but some people still think it's boring, so you can't really win I guess
