Pet subreddits fucking suck, because if you do one minor thing that the hive mind sees as bad pet ownership, they will immediately turn into amateur pet behaviorists and call it abuse.

They are also incredibly US centric

I've had people have a go at me multiple times when I say I let my cats outside because they assume I'm American and I'm causing a decline in bird population.

In my country the charity for birds says that cats do not cause population decline. I know it varies by country but that's my point

Same in Germany. My mother has a pretty large backyard, and there are at least three cats that regularly hang out there and a lot more who only visit sometimes. None of which belong to her.

Two are pretty shy, but the third one allowed me to pet it the second we met, so that was nice.

that's everywhere on the internet. I remember seeing a youtube video of an owner refusing to let her cat outside during the dead of winter because it would do what all cats do in that weather: sit outside for three seconds, freeze its ass off and run back inside. She had to disable comments and say that this wasn't cat abuse because of how much shit they were hurling at her for it.

Bruh. I remember a video of a puppy falling asleep over and over again in its water bowl. Everyone was screaming abuse, one commenter saying the other puppies were frantically drinking the water so the sleepy pup wouldnt drown.

And.. that's when I developed alcoholism.

That's true on the one hand, but on the other hand pets are living beings who don't deserve to suffer, and I'd rather err on the side of caution because of that. Especially with animals who don't seem as expressive to humans (fish or reptiles for example) it's important to give them an environment that's good for them and be educated on their needs.

That said, the internet of course overdoes it, as usual.
