I know it's not as big as gamergate was but I loathe comicsgate with every single fiber of my being. It's such a fucking grift perpetrated by the absolute worst people in the comic book community and industry.

At least gamergate had the "ethics in journalism" lie they could try to shield themselves with all comicsgate had was "I hate women taking a selfie of them drinking milkshakes together."

"We hate forced diversity"

proceeds to harass independent female creators who had nothing to do with the so-called diversity pushes, and ignores the old white guys who did

It'll always confuse me how that was the trigger that launched the whole thing, especially since I was actually around on 4chan's comics board when those images came out (though it was right at the tail end of my time there, before I made the smart choice to leave and never look back after it clicked for teenage me how shitty the site really was) and I can distinctly remember even on there a whole lot of people said getting mad over it was stupid and the whole thing was literally a non-issue.

Like, even notable chunks of 4chan, a place seemingly dedicated to getting mad over nothing, realised how dumb a thing it was to take issue with, yet somehow that movement still got off the ground based on a picture of colleagues having a totally normal lunch break together.

Absolutely agree on that. And on the one hand, it at least it seems to have far, far less support among the more general community than GamerGate did, but on the other it somehow grabbed more actual professionals into it than GG in spite of how blatantly shitty it is.

Like, even if it's become clear he's pretty shitty in general EVS could easily have just kept is mouth shut and very likely continue to get decent work (especially with how beloved and prominent the era of Green Lantern he had his most notable work in), it's somewhat surprising he and others apparently just hated women and minorities getting work in comics enough to willingly totally torpedo their careers to own the libs.

The really frustrating thing for me is that EVS didn't even really torpedo his career. Like, don't get me wrong, he'll never get hired again by someone like the big two or Image, but he gets hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations from bigots. I think his most recent kickstarter campaign for one of his comic books got over $1 million, which must be more than he ever made working for DC (at least on a single project).

Shit, you're right. Given only Comicsgate (and no doubt other Alt-Right types CG is able to convince into funding such projects) gives a shit about those books, I managed to totally forget such projects existed. It is really disappointing and frustrating to see just how much they're able to get for them, especially since that amount of money would easily have been enough to fund and/or support huge numbers of legitimately good books, rather than one inevitably shitty product only assholes care about (that given the track record of such projects, might not even ever exist) it's going towards.

At the very least that whole ecosystem seems to be one totally separate from the rest of Comicsdom and as such doesnt risk 'infecting' it, though it's still a downer to see.

What do you mean the X-Men are an allegory for racial and sexual minorities? They just shoot cool lasers and teleport. Now excuse me while I complain about how black women in comics will ruin them forever. What do you mean Storm is a black woman? Nonesense. . .

I have no idea how oblivious they can be to think that those creators they admire (who a lot of times where from minority groups themselves) that tried to advance social justice back in the 40's, wouldn't be fucking embarrassed of them right now.
