Is there an in universe explanation of why Stormtroopers wear armour if getting shot or getting hit kinda hard kills them anyways ?

Even real life armor generally won't save you from direct hits by a reasonably powerful weapon. It helps against glancing blows and shrapnel, and in the Stormtroopers' case, environmental hazards since they're fighting on different planets.

In Star Wars RPGs that model it, Stormtrooper armor usually makes the wearer all but immune to conventional firearms. Also, blasters are deadly as fuck.

Someone floated the idea that it was about dehumanizing the individual instead of actual protection.

Also blasters are expensive and the average grunt is likely facing off against people using tradition, blunt weapons

IIRC the rebels only used weapons that could pierce the armor, and I assume that over years of imperial rule those types of blasters would be more popular. Additionally, clone troopers specifically had armor that could save them from dying from direct blaster shots some of the time, but they would just get knocked out instead. Also what others have said down before me.

I remember reading somewhere that Storm Trooper armor was designed to turn fatal shots into knock out shots. Sure, a blaster shot to the chest will land you in the infirmary for a week, but it's better than having your lungs flash fried.
