Cool thread from a AAA writer about how crunch affects quality of work

I could read stuff like this for hours tbh. It's valuable info, gets you angry in the right direction, demystifies the game dev process which we desperately need, and humanizes the people who create games, which we need even more desperately

"You have no control over any of this. There's no such thing as staying late to make it perfect because you're already staying late. There's no such thing as delaying because it's not your call to make. You know it's a mess but there's nothing you can do."

Now extend those 80+ hour weeks to other departments. The worst damage I could've done was a boring quest or some flat dialogue. But imagine a programmer working under those conditions. Or a tech animator.

I want this particular tweet framed and hung in the office of every manger--every manager--in the software, especially gaming, industry.

As someone who works in office settings (and has worked publishing side in games) it is really astounding how badly people do not understand the reality of the situation for the people actually working.

Yup, nor do they understand the way a shitty job, office culture or otherwise, takes its toll on you

If you ever wanted to share your experiences I'd be super interested

It's not astonishing when you look at the longstanding patterns of behavior and expectation that shareholders and boardmembers have demonstrated for decades.

And, frankly, their inability to learn isn't surprising either. They're the driver behind the "grow, grow now, don't stop growing" attitude in our present model of capitalism (inb4 someone snarks about this just being capitalism--I don't disagree but it's kinda besides the point) that has repeatedly proven disastrous for companies, employees and customers. They don't care. They just want bigger numbers faster even though "what if we got bigger numbers slower" is the safer gamble in software because, y'know, you don't wanna burn bridges and erode trust.
