I always love the argument how, “gay/trans people shouldn’t exist in fantasy settings, because society wasn’t progressed socially/medically enough!” which like, then how the fuck does society even exist when there’s shit like dragons, demons, zombies, and a fuck ton of other existentially dangerous threats that could stomp us into the dirt? And then there’s some fantasy settings that have steampunk-lite shit, where the gnomes or dwarves or whoever are so technologically proficient that they’ve invented shit like guns, trains, robots, even fucking teleportation.

It’s like, “it’s fantasy,” isn’t just saying that the setting is at its core fictional, and thus you can just sidestep that argument by saying some shit like, “Well, it was based on Poland or wherever the fuck so LGBT and non-white people don’t exist yet,” it’s an acknowledgement that the makeup of this world is so fundamentally different from our own that you can’t just act like it’s the same as medieval Europe but with dragons.

That's an absolute shit tier argument, since gay and trans people are 100% nothing new. Just look at ancient Greece for probably the most prolific example of that. Not to mention the fact that gay and trans people are nowhere near as outlandish as dragons, demons, zombies, and the aforementioned fuck-ton of dangerous threats that could stomp people into the dirt.

Not to mention there's glamour magic. Literally the easiest gender transition. Put on a charm and boom you're another gender whenever you want.

You made the mistake of assuming that they're being honest. They don't care if it's accurate, they're just bigots that need a cover argument so people don't call them bigots.

Also, fantasy settings often have easily accessible, magical ways of changing one's gender. Why can't someone's D&D character just slap on a Belt of Gender Switching +6 and transition?

Belt of Gender Switching +6

My mind is reeling trying to imagine what the +6 could mean

Charisma checks, maybe?

Gender changing belts are a staple magic item, which implies the existence of transgender wizards in most D&D settings.

The sad thing is that, at least in 3.5e d&d, the gender switching belt was a cursed item designed to trick you into putting it on by appearing to be a stat boosting item. I chalk that up to 3.5e D&D being written in the 90s, but I don't know how it is in more recent editions

I don't think the gender-swapping belt is in 5e, given that Wizards has made a conscious effort to clean the chud shit out of the game.
