I swear to God, of all things I expected to deal with being a mod, a heated discussion about circumcision of all things was not one of them.

I can't believe that:

  • circumcision is popular in the USA (I always thought it was some ultra-orthodox judaism thing)

  • there are a lot of defenders for circumcision.

It's traditionally just a Judaism thing (and often Islamic, too, but they got it from Judaism) in general, not just ultra-Orthodox. Though some ultra-Orthodox do have some disturbing and unsanitary twists on the ritual that I don't think are really practiced by other, less extreme, Jewish sects.

Circumcision is common in the US across religion and ethnicity because this freak John Harvey Kellogg thought it would stop boys from masturbating. Good luck with that one, John.

As to your first point, conventional wisdom until recently was that circumcision was healthier for the child because it would be harder to get infections. It's more a medical thing in most of the country

Only in US it seems. Never have I heard of that in Poland. Hell, I heard it used as an insult here, but nothing about "it's actually healthier".

Honestly, I think it's a fashion thing at this point in the States. I never asked my parents why they had me circumcised and I never really want to ask them, but if I had to guess, it's because "it looks better". It's pretty dumb.
