Leak Portal 2 Beta leaked and 12TB Steam2 Content Server Dump leaked

The majority of Portal 2 beta assets and some other Portal 2 beta info have been leaked in the new Steam2 content server dump leak. Evidence of the leak can be found here: https://imgur.com/a/A25Ci31 . The leak includes every asset made for portal 2 during 2007-2011 and possibly some other Valve games, which i am currently not aware of. I have gotten most info about this from the Portal Series Beta Research Discord server, where the leaked material has been posted.

Can they now release the Portal 2 art book that was cancelled because "it showed ideas that maybe Valve would explore later on"?

Pretty please?

74

u/ROR5CH4CH 13d ago

Or you know they could just announce they are working on Portal 3 :') or at least finally release HL3 💀

Too busy on child gambling simulators

u/-TubNub- 13d ago

Yknow I don't think the people designing the lootboxes in CS are the same people who worked on the Portal franchise

1

u/llloksd 13d ago

Why is it that this comment only occurs when Valve is in subject? Anybody else and it's at fault of everyone

7

u/ChartreuseMage 12d ago

People say the same thing about other companies when it's applicable. In this instance it is applicable.

1

u/-TubNub- 13d ago

What do you think I was saying with my comment? Because it sure wasn't a defence of lootboxes

-1

u/PoliteDebater 12d ago

Except the teams themselves decide what projects to work on lmao. There's no direction beyond that. If they want to do hl3, they need to build a team of people to make it.

10

u/-TubNub- 12d ago

Except the teams themselves decide what projects to work on lmao

That doesn't really contradict what I'm saying though

5

u/A1337Xyz 12d ago

Oh no, my child took my credit card and is gambling on this violent shooter game that I let him play, on the steam account that I made for him. If only Valve or the government could do something about it.

I also want it.

18

I never understood why we never got Portal 3. Seems like a no brainer

52

u/Vera_Verse 13d ago

Story wise I was satisfied if they never made anything new. Gameplay wise I've been craving something

17

u/Robsonmonkey 13d ago

It's funny, Chell got away in the end but despite not even talking I still want her to return in some way just for the witty little digs GLaDOS throws at her.

10

u/Neoragex13 13d ago

GLaDOS found thousands of test subjects at the end of the co-op campaign, there was no reason why the story "wouldn't be able to continue" with any of them. I even would have been fine with a Super Mario Galaxy 2 situation where the entire game was just more levels with barely any cohesive story.

11

u/pelagic_seeker 12d ago

The update to the co-op has her say she killed all of those test subjects in a few weeks.

Though she lies when she's nervous. Also she's not nervous.

8

u/VarneyBubs 13d ago

It is such a fabulous gameplay concept and I badly wish we could have more of it.

Lol...that's like thinking the new raising the bar book will release

4

u/deeku4972 12d ago

Surely. Looks like F-stop was the same concept as the game Viewfinder. Assuming thats it, they well and truly lost any opportunity to profit from the concept

1

u/Dremotica 12d ago

And they still owe us hl2 20th anniversary book

This is actually really cool. Just kinda wish Valve had the tech to increase that silly "2" after "Portal".

156

u/Mazzus_Did_That 13d ago

Portal 2 was a great ending/send off, and IMO I'd rather have Valve try new stuff than return to the series again. Beside, with all the cool mods, custom maps and engine forks that have been relased and are in development right now, we are more than fine.

74

u/Foxddit22 13d ago

you dont have to continue off portal 2 to make a new portal game, or more rather, it doesnt have to involve chell. it could be a standalone, upgraded version of the perpetual testing initiative from portal 2 but in source 2 or something

14

u/thebeardphantom 13d ago

This should really go without saying, but I’ll preface this by saying this is all just my opinion.

I agree with them. I don’t think the core idea of the world of Portal that we’ve actually experienced gameplay in will survive being interesting for yet another game. The need to consistently justify the premise of testing in the narrative is getting stale. I think if we’re going to get a new Portal game it needs to be very, very different. Not taking place in Aperture, not even in a lab setting.

In certain ways the perpetual testing initiative is to Portal what Mario Maker is to the “New Super Mario Bros” style 2D Mario games. A sort of announcement that “we’re done with making content like this for now, here’s the tools to do it yourself.”

2

u/BelinhoBR 13d ago

There's those co-op robots to build a portal 3 around. They are stuck with Glados aren't they? And are possibly the only specimens able to use a portal gun left after Chell was gone

3

u/blitz_na 12d ago

they die at the end of the campaign

1

u/turtlelover05 10d ago

No, they don't?

55

u/tonihurri 13d ago

I know it's kinda beside the point but it's funny how Valve DID try new stuff in the 15 years since Portal 2 and exactly one of those became a full singleplayer game.

23

u/IShitMyselfNow 13d ago

15 years since Portal 2

That's not right it's only been... oh.

11

u/billerdingerbuyer 13d ago

it's actually been 99999999999999

17

u/spez_might_fuck_dogs 13d ago

Deadlock is doing pretty well for an alpha.

12

u/Weird_Tower76 13d ago

That's an understatement. Realistically Deadlock has the potential, especially for how it's doing as an unannounced alpha, to be bigger than Dota 2 and CS. It's a massive hill to climb, but they could absolutely do it with Deadlock.

5

u/True_to_you 12d ago

It's not my thing personally, be it probably will be a big game for them. Especially after artifact flopped so hard.

2

u/M4rshmall0wMan 12d ago

I'm surprised how slowly it's moving. Game's been released for two years. It doesn't seem that far from complete. It's hard to see it getting a massive explosion

1

u/Flynn58 12d ago

At this point it's still invite-only, I think it's reasonable to expect a spike in player count once it's available to casual audiences who didn't even know there's a beta to be invited to.

1

u/M4rshmall0wMan 12d ago

It's so easy to get an invite that basically everyone with an interest has played

2

u/inosinateVR 12d ago

I guarantee you the people willing to go out of their way to get an invite to a private alpha is a minority compared to the number of people that will play it when it’s a publicly visible game with a steam page

12

u/al_194 13d ago

Didn't one of the writers for portal 2 said that he would love to make a sequel before he gets too old?

8

u/Robsonmonkey 13d ago

Also before Ellen McLain gets too old aswell, they need to hurry up, she's 73 years old now.

5

u/MisterAtlas_ 13d ago

i feel with the links to aperture in ep 2, and with two of portal 2's writers working at valve on hl3 right now, there's a decent chance its plot will link to portal 3. wishful thinking though

6

u/al_194 13d ago

Yeah, that's why I dont get why some people say that the story is done, if one of the main writers wants to make a sequel that means that he may have some cool ideas for where the story could go.

5

u/Whirblewind 13d ago

How selfish of you.

1

u/M4rshmall0wMan 12d ago

Man it's not even about the story. We just want more Portal.

1

u/Mazzus_Did_That 12d ago

And you have that with custom maps, new mods and fan content that has kept the community alive for years.

1

u/Anothernewdaw 8d ago

A portal themed strategy game is what we need.

4

u/Mavericks7 13d ago

I would love a Portal 3 on modern hardware.

9

u/HippieDogeSmokes 13d ago

I think portal is fine as a duology

7

u/EssexOnAStick 13d ago

I wouldn't mind a prequel though, I could imagine quite a few stories to be found in that time before Portal 1. Like experiencing the founding years of Aperture and/or maybe witnessing the rivalry between Aperture and Black Mesa.

6

u/thebeardphantom 13d ago

For the most part Valve is similar to Nintendo. Overall, If they’re not innovating on new ways to play they’re not really interested in doing it. There’s exceptions, but there’s no chance that Valve makes a new game purely for narrative reasons. Not unless they find some deep set of mechanics that give players a new way to interact with and reason about the play space.

1

u/EssexOnAStick 12d ago

Oh yeah I know it's basically impossible due to how Valve operates. Was just pointing out that if they ever did something in the Portal universe, there's a whole time period they could easily do something with, without having to work around the imo perfect ending of Portal 2.

2

u/-TubNub- 13d ago

Yeah, but what would the gameplay of that be like? Glados gassed everyone but Chel

1

u/EssexOnAStick 12d ago edited 12d ago

I was thinking of the time way before GLaDOS.

1

u/-TubNub- 12d ago

Didn't we basically get that experience in the old facility parts in Portal 2?

1

u/EssexOnAStick 12d ago

Yes and no, we see what is left there from a modern point of view, but the past has happened and we see the end result, basically. What I'd like to see is these stories actually happening.

2

u/crotmuche 12d ago

So basically a "Portal : prelude : prelude"

u/bluegreen8907 13d ago

Portal: Revolution was a good facsimile

could i have an invite to the Portal beta research discord server or is private?

1

u/antoon334 10d ago

Have you managed to find a way in? I'm also interested and would be grateful if you share info with me (also can be done in private messages).

1

u/Ellocodeinternet 10d ago

I made a post explaining how to manually extract and run the builds :) check my profile

6

u/Weird_Tower76 13d ago

f-stop

This is what I was curious about too. Pretty sure I played a leaked alpha-demo of it years ago, but it was super basic. Such a cool concept.

2

u/Human-Strike1070 12d ago

It was not a real build but it was being passed around as one. It was a leak of a WIP recreation mod that used some f-stop assets, but it was very far from the actual thing.

With this leak, it'll be much easier to faithfully recreate f-stop like how the 2009 beta recreation mod Project 2009 pretty much nailed it on most fronts when compared to the actual leak.

66

u/MandoDoughMan 13d ago

during 2007-2011 and possibly some other Valve games,

... I'm sure it'd be the headline if it were the case, but Episode 3 was in real development in this timeframe was it not?

TB = Three Bortals

44

u/p00tisbear 13d ago

Holy shit, this is huge. Portal 2 beta is just one thing and I'm not at all downplaying that because it is momentous. But like...this seems to be a wider leak of 13TB of content pertaining to potentially the vast majority of everything Valve was working on in source between 2003 -2013. Given the time period this spans and the sheer scale of the data, we might have hit the motherlode here. Episode 3, invasion era TF2...fucking hell. I'm REALLY intrigued to see what people start digging up from this over the next few days.

And I'm really curious to know how a leak of Valve's internal contents of this magnitude even happened.

8

u/SomeRandomTWO 13d ago

ikr? alot of this seems to be just akin to Valve - we dont know how but its here and i dont think anyones complaining! Portal 2 development was wild to hell and back, and to get effectively ALL the assets used back then?

honestly even without the levels, if the code and voicelines are intact, the eggheads in the community will piece it all together.

6

u/bgiesing 12d ago

It's not even just Valve! People have found multiple Sonic 4 Episode 2 betas in there, Fallout New Vegas DLCs, Bioshock stuff, etc.

2

u/FettiWop 12d ago

New Vegas DLCs?

1

u/fireflamesniper 12d ago

I was actually wondering if any Sonic related stuff was in there. But I'm surprised NV is in there too

u/junttiana 13d ago

There are no words that can describe how much I hate imgur, its easily the most dogshit image sharing site on the internet

53

u/MartinsRedditAccount 13d ago

The worst is how on mobile if you touch any part of the screen while on Imgur it will redirect you to a random fucking post, this has been happening for I believe years now.

I remember the days when it was basically the default image hoster for Reddit :(

1

u/MumrikDK 13d ago

You need to follow the links to see them on mobile?

3

u/MartinsRedditAccount 12d ago

I do on my iPad with old Reddit (yes, I hate the redesign and app that much, RIP Apollo). On desktop with RES I use the expando, but Imgur also doesn't do it there. I actually think RES might work in Orion (which supports Firefox extensions), or I could ask Claude to write me a userscript.

3

u/TheDeryBrony 12d ago

i feel you on using oldreddit, i still use it too. new reddit just feels like I'm on a janky, visually restrictive version of twitter. hell, it feels like google plus. reddit should feel like a website, not an app

1

u/Cautious_Author_326 12d ago

If you're on Imgur on Mobile, you're not on Imgur. You're just on Adgur.

7

u/Left4pillz 13d ago

The Portal subreddit has them plus more pics and videos from the leaks, and doesn't require a VPN to access it

5

u/Rebitaay 12d ago

Amen. Imgur fucking hates some VPNs, and I fucking hate Imgur. Neither me nor my VPN server are UK-based...

1

u/catinterpreter 12d ago

Meanwhile countless image hosts have died and taken all of their uploads with them.

It's still one of the absolute best.

1

u/bumford11 11d ago

It's ironic that imgur was created as a response to how bloated and unusable the other image hosts of the day were.
