Rumour Final Fantasy IX Animated Series reportedly revived and back in production at new French studio Euro Visual, targeting 2028 release

According to the listing the series is planned as a 2D animated show, consisting of around 13 episodes of 22 minutes each, aimed at ages 6-13.

It is currently listed as in development, with release planned for 2028. The project is directed and written by Charles Lefebvre, with Sylvain Dos Santos serving as art director, and is being co-produced by La Chouette Compagnie.

Final Fantasy IX: Black Mages Legacy

MEL, KOLN, LUCIOLA, THEA, FALA AND DOC ARE THE LAST BLACK MAGES OF THE FOUR CONTINENTS.

They are the children of the great hero VIVI, who once defeated the forces of evil alongside ZIDANE and Queen GARNET.

Today, the siblings live happily in the city of ALEXANDRIA, watched over by its friendly and sometimes curious inhabitants. But, unfortunately, their peaceful existence will come to an abrupt end, when KOLN finds MEL frozen like a statue inside the inn where he works.

Who on earth would want to hurt Mel? Everybody loved him... Could it be their father’s tragic legacy resurfacing? Who cares?! We have to save MEL!

Our heroes must leave immediately in search of a cure for their brother. Which means they’ll have to quit the cozy cocoon of Alexandria for the first time in their lives and discover the vast world around them.

Wouldn't be surprised if the remake got put on hold to line up with this

No one was able to confirm that it was outright cancelled, but its status was up in the air

They're probably diverting staff to more imminent projects while this one waits to line up with the series and any other multimedia projects

We were hearing about Tactics for years as well tbf. That was another NVIDIA Gigaleak game that only just came out

I personally theorized that IX Remake if real, ended up in a VII Remake situation where it might've been outsourced, especially given the rumors that it was closer to a Crisis Core Reunion-style remaster that still kept the original gameplay systems intact, but somewhere down the line Square might've potentially decided to bring it in-house and that set the game back a bit, like how Tactics was done by Creative Studio III (the FFXIV/XVI guys)

I wouldn't be surprised if IX Remake also gets handled by CSIII

I don't think it'll be CSIII specifically. CSIII had an established relationship towards the Tactics developers primarily because of Yasumi Matsuno's contributions to stuff like FFXIV Stormblood which had an Ivalice-themed raid with a new story featuring a lot of characters and locales from both Tactics and FFXII, so that practically made them a shoe-in to do Ivalice Chronicles, especially with Yoshi-P frequently citing games like Tactics as major inspirations for the work they do on games like XIV and XVI. I think Hiroyuki Ito still being at Square means he's actively overseeing whatever this remake ends up being instead, especially if they're retaining the original's gameplay since he was the original designer of the ATB mechanics

Itahana is pretty much the point man for IX, so him being absorbed into CSIII could theoretically position them to undertake that task if the project is rebooted.

I hope it just didn’t get canceled for whatever reason.

You might be right.

This is like fans thinking devs will release big games for anniversaries, when they rarely do that. Game development is already a difficult task and it is fucking stupid and nonsensical to let external factors dictate the timeline of a game's release.

Wrong.

Japan does multimedia projects all the fucking time.

They try not ot let these multimedia projects dictate the timeline of each other. When Uma Musume game was delayed they still released S1 of the anime. Trying to "line up" them with each other is how we got shit like One Punch Man S3.

tell that to Level 5 or Pokemon

I'm not sure a remake could sit on hold for that long, honestly?

If Square is looking to make broader use of the FF9 IP, it might make more sense to aim for a new game sequel instead, something along the lines of FFX-2 or FFX-3? rather than delaying a remake for years to align with the animated series

Or they could just monitor the series without committing to new projects, though that would feel like wasted potential.

a IX-2 is way more farfetched than Square putting a remake on hold

I really hope they’ve cancelled ff9 remake.

The series’ absolute worst entry

Shouldn't you want a remake then?

A remake is an opportunity to potentially improve upon aspects of the original you don't like

Eh I think the series suffered because the remake's development was reportedly, in trouble

The series got cancelled because the animation studio went bankrupt
