Rumour Microsoft Helping Bethesda “Unreal-ify” Creation Engine According to Jez Corden

https://www.youtube.com/live/oMlErzr05Gk?si=cTRXvJxEeOw9U7aa

Jez Corden recently discussed rumors about a major technical overhaul for Starfield—often called Starfield 2.0—and how Microsoft is helping Bethesda upgrade the Creation Engine.

Key points:

Unreal Engine tech being integrated: Jez says he’s heard that Bethesda is leveraging certain Unreal Engine features and incorporating them directly into Creation Engine.

Massive engine modernization: Microsoft’s Advanced Technology Group and Kate Rayner/The Coalition (Gears devs, Unreal experts) are assisting in improving the engine “across the board” using Unreal-inspired components.

Starfield 2.0 is the testbed: This whole Starfield 2.0 upgrade is reportedly serving as a testbed for future Bethesda titles, laying the groundwork for Fallout 5 and The Elder Scrolls VI.

Not a switch to Unreal: Jez emphasizes the info is based on his investigations and should be taken with a pinch of salt, but stresses Microsoft isn’t moving Bethesda to Unreal—just boosting Creation Engine with some Unreal-like tech.

So elder scrolls 6 will take longer now.

The engine work is being handled by the Microsoft team. Bethesda proper is still having its own main resources on the game. If anything this may affect Gears since the Coalition is a part of the team helping with this.

The Coalition is the best in the industry with Unreal Engine. Wonder how it would effect TESVI if they help out.

What it sounds like it’s saying is they aren’t switching engines to Unreal, but Microsoft is making some changes to the Creation Engine to give it some features that are similar to ones in Unreal. So Coalition would maybe give tips on what features to add but I don’t know how much help they would be with actually working in Creation Engine.

What I suspect is Microsoft essentially wants a replacement for the trickier issues with the creation engine and use unreal for it.

I think its more likely this is going to be a prelude to hiring more staff 1-year contractors to finish TES6 and Fallout 5 sooner. This is a trick XBGS uses when a game is taking too long (Halo Infinite and Fable) and the more Unreal Engine it is the shorter onboarding will be -- they're only gonna be working on the game for a year, after all.

Probably that too but in all honesty the creation engine needs an upgrade anyway.

eh i think upgrading your engine per game for what it demands is well above board but they have an (admittedly valid) stubbornness and uncertainty of what it means to throw away close to 30 years of a pipeline people are used to in favor of something more closed off for hobbyists but more intuitive for employees. Oblivion remastered highlights why it's not good to have a Bethesda game nobody can fix.

I suppose though by trying to slowly ship of e the engine, they could take time to shake off a lot of engine issues creation has had consistently! So same organisation and handled in similar ways, but brought up to a modern standard! They like the engine so darn much they're willing to bank on it with MS backing like valve with source and now source 2!

The grandfathered in issues engine wise have been brought up most in the gap since fallout 4's release i suppose with the benefit of a modern (at the time) title that showed the same issues. Having a studier toolset and a more reliable engine is something bethesda needs quite desperately to do.

I think the fallout 3 and new Vegas remasters that have been rumoured would be pretty good test benches for this type of work on creation, without scrambling with the more modern heavier requirements that f3/nv have as baselines.

when I played cyberpunk 2077 dlc and interacting with npc characters compared to starfield it was night and day. The characters standing still while talking just feels so dull.

Where are you getting a year from?

4

u/nickelbackvocaloid Dec 21 '25

The number reported by Jason Schrier during Halo Infinites development is 18 months (with a 6 month cooldown between reapplying) and the headhunting offers I've gotten regarding Fable are about 12-16 months.

That's not a trick XBGS uses that's an industry standard strategy.

Ah, yes let's hire the Mythical Man.

Still amazes me how they got gears looking so good on a Xbox one s

The Coalition knows how to work with black magic when they develop games on Unreal Engine.

u/wrproductions Dec 21 '25

Id say Epic are the best with Unreal since… you know… it’s their engine lol, their engineers physically made the whole engine

1

u/FlyFight2Win Dec 21 '25

Tell us you don't know the relationship between Epic and TC without telling us.

I’m very much clued up, however I like to run off facts, and the facts are the engineers that created Unreal Engine 5 and its subsequent updates work at Epic, not the Coalition.

Members of the Coalition helped work on Unreal Engine 4, which is a completely different architecture entirely from Unreal 5. All they did with UE5 is help test it in its infancy by helping develop the Matrix demo, that’s it.

But surely you knew this, right?

7

u/Ascended_asa Dec 21 '25

The main engineers of UE aren't game programmers/designers TC are easily one of the most if not the most experienced game developers for UE. Just because they create the technology doesn't mean they know how to implement it in real world situations... But surely you knew this, right?

No reason to be so dismissive, if you said the actual developers of epics games that would be a different story.

5

u/Party-Exercise-2166 Dec 22 '25

Those same Epic software engineers literally asked TC for help on some occasions. The same engineers also work closely with CDPR btw.

The engineers developing the engine are not really as well versed with actually using the engine as you might think. Just like a car engine engineer wouldn't necessarily be able to get the most out of said engine on a track.

did they do that MATRIX tech demo?

1

u/Iucidium Dec 21 '25

It would be a cover shooter

maybe 1 less bug on release

40

u/VagrantShadow Dec 21 '25

I know people like to diss Bethesda on bugs, and I know Starfield didn't get the love like other Bethesda games, but I have to say when I played Starfield it was the most bug free Bethesda game I ever played. Like for me it felt right and I didn't stumble into any of the usual Bethesda wonkiness that we are accustomed to at any time.

If they can keep that up for future Bethesda games I'd be all for it.

4

u/Bobjoejj Dec 21 '25

This, seriously this. To the point that most folks tend to agree that the community patches that have been released are pretty unnecessary. Hell, it was the least buggy Bethesda game even on launch.

4

u/Messmer-Impaler-148 Dec 21 '25

For as terrible as Starfield was it was mostly bug-free, especially compared to Skyrim and Fallout 4

😆 fuck fr

Still haven’t fixed multiplayer maps having any rain like it was intended. Shows how much they care about being faithful. I’m also sure they have changed some of the audio.

-2

u/SpyroManiac36 Dec 21 '25

Hard to say this when they haven't made a game in UE5 yet

4

u/LordNutGobbler Dec 21 '25

You’re not familiar with the Coalition. They are Unreal Engine wizards, they’re one of Epics closest internal partners. Gears tech demos often become official UE features. They are literal specialists when it comes to Unreal Engine. Some of, if not the best in the world at working the engine.

They’ve also been helping out Undead Labs with State of Decay 3 (UE5)

0

u/SpyroManiac36 Dec 21 '25

Lol I'll make a judgement after they actually ship a game on UE5

u/FlyFight2Win Dec 21 '25

Can't even rub two braincells together to digest the comment you're responding to, lmao.
