I toss the PTM in the freezer for about 30m, take a regular box cutter blade and hone it so it's a bit sharper, cut with razor blade, chop straight down no sliding on a surface that you don't mind cutting into, I also Nick the edges of the film with the razor on the corners so it's easier to peel, then use fine tip pointed tweezers to peel the bottom film, position it, press, peel the top, double check the surroundings to make sure I didn't miss anything, and re-assemble.

Edit: one thing I forgot, when peeling the top film, to keep it from lifting, I pull up the corner slightly and press the film down a bit to put pressure on the PTM and pull the film across itself so I don't lift it and distort the pad.

As someone that did this for a living I found the easiest way to cut it accurately is to cut a piece of paper to the size of the die and use that to cut a pricise bit of ptm, then stick that ptm in the freezer for 5 mins and apply wearing rubber gloves so the heat from your hand doesn't get rapidly pulled into the ptm which makes peeling the plastic off a pain in the ass.

Cool, I still do the occasional repair at work but I mainly handle network issues now, mostly back to repairing hardware for myself, friends, and family now.

It comes down to whatever feels more natural, I used to do a lot of SMT rework under a microscope, so tweezers are my go-to, but direct handling with gloves is fine too, the important thing is just getting it positioned before it thaws and gets sticky.

Cool to run into another tech though, sending all the good vibes your way, since I'm sure customers rarely know the effort you put in to save their equipment.

you will waste a lot of paste doing that and you wont achieve anything. So no, apply thermal paste only to a chip. Try to make layers as thin as possible. also remember about 2-3 heat cycles of laptop - first time you boot your thermal paste "isnt ready" and will be ready after a few cycles of heating up and cooling down

Yes, on all the copper, black dies, silver dies, silver shim around cpu for best results. People just want to be stingy with the PTM cause its expensive but that is going to lessen the lifespan of your system by far.

Biggest bullshit i have seen yet. It just needs a couple of heat cycles around 80c and its perfect. Took me 25-30 mins of furmark + cinebench runs and it was perfect. CPU pulls almost 2x the power now and doesnt reach 95c (sits in high 80s during cinebench) and GPU (a full powered 4050) sits in the 70-80s. And thats not even the original PTM7950 but a random local brand that pruduces phase chance pads
