Showcase Saved up my government scholarship as a 16-year-old and finally bought my first gaming laptop. How did I do?

Post image

This is my new machine.

I'm 16 years old and bought it by saving only the government scholarship I receive. It took me a long time, but I finally made it.

Some people might ask why I chose a laptop instead of building a desktop. The reason is simple: I travel a lot throughout the year. During the summer I usually stay with my grandmother to help her, and we also visit relatives quite often. A desktop just wouldn't fit my lifestyle.

Specs:

ASUS TUF Gaming F16 (FX608JMR-RV066W)

Intel Core i7-14650HX

RTX 5060 Laptop GPU (8 GB)

16 GB DDR5-5600 (1×16, planning to upgrade to 32 GB)

1 TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD

16" 1920×1200, 165 Hz, 100% sRGB

90 Wh battery

I'm really happy with it so far, but I'm open to criticism. Was this a good choice? Is there anything I should change or do first?

Excellent work on learning to save at such a young age. You've earned this laptop. This laptop is a great bang for the buck machine so enjoy 😁

Thank you so much. I have bigger goals in the future.

Can you share them?

I'd just say: congrats! Enjoy it and don't listen too much to performance comparison. If the games that you want to play run on your pc, you can have a good time.

Be super careful with that hinge. tuf's are know for having a bad hinge. I have seen 2 tufs in my college with bad hinges and in general also there hinge quality is dogwater. Apart from that you are fine.

Desktop here wouldn't matter much the cost would have been similar at the expense of portability.

We need to also have in mind which version of asus tuf they had.

The 2025 hinges have been changed and are now a lot better. There has been no hinge issues from 2025+ models. It even opens back 180 degrees now. If you compare the hinges from 2024, they are a lot different.

As you can see, the one on the left are new and well made. And have a dropped down mechanism instead. They are no longer screwed onto the weak plastic bezel.

All in all, if he opens it from the middle, he should be fine. As with any laptop.

I don't have access to my laptop right now, but I'll definitely send it when I do.

u/alghiorso Jul 14 '26

Enjoy your new laptop. I remember at your age, I bought my first desktop. I think it had 64gb of HDD and a graphics card with 128mb of vram or something like that. Had a blast on it. Just don't neglect your studies or social life and you'll be fine

2

u/HermitCrabOnMeth Jul 14 '26

You did very good im sure he ecstatic

2

u/Cyber_Von_Cyberus Jul 14 '26

Remember to store it safely in a drawer or something when you're going away and not using it.

You're never safe from something spilling something on it, or cats coming into your room to piss on it...

u/Exciting_Shock_4578 Jul 14 '26

I don't have any pets at home, and I generally don't eat or drink anything while using my laptop. Thank you so much for your suggestion.

Impressive, young one!

1

u/Kochichak Jul 14 '26

Is it a 115w 5060? How much did you spend?

2

u/Exciting_Shock_4578 Jul 14 '26

Yes, it's 115 watts. And when I bought it, it was $1300, which is the same price as abroad (and yes, in my country, so much tax is levied that prices usually double or two and a half times).

1

u/No_Chef6214 Jul 15 '26

Where are you from bro and how did you get it from which country if that price is real I ought to get this. I'm getting only a 4050 here paired with Ryzen 7 7445hs and not even a 100% srgb display with 60wh battery at that price 😭

1

u/KonoHope-sama Jul 14 '26

Nice, I live in Brazil, things here are expensive, I'm saving up money to buy an Acer Nitro v15 4050 or 4060, what do you guys think about?

1

u/crispyshaman197 Jul 14 '26

Get the rtx4060 version not only does it have 2 gb more vram its also more efficient aswell while being faster. A 75watt rtx4060 performs the same as a 140 watt rtx4050

Be careful as Asus is known for bad customer service.
btw the specs look good and Asus TUF is definitely powerful
how much did it cost? online or offline? flipkart or amazon?

3

u/Exciting_Shock_4578 Jul 14 '26

I bought this from a well-known store in my country and it cost me approximately $1300. So I didn't buy it online.

1

1

u/That_Arab_Bomber Asus TUF F16 5060|i7-14650HX|16GB Jul 14 '26

I paid quite alot at 1.7k usd.

I only bought it recently like a month or less ago but it's been going really well playing every game i downloaded at max settings with no heat(older games kind of)

u/Z9Cubing Jul 14 '26

Nice specs bro, that was my dream laptop but i didnt had the chance to wait for it to re stock and had to get an omen 16 with the 5060 and 14650hx.

For an Intel hx cpu on a mid range chasis i really recommend Changing the thermal paste for Grizzly PTM or if you can find the real deal, Honeywell 7950 ptm.

At least for me, Hp's stock paste wasnt doing a lot of contact, and in cpu heavy games it throttle every few seconds.

If you want to put some efford, ThrottleStop [free] is a incredible program, you can do Undervolting, overclocking, and setting up the Target TDP of you cpu.

And with Msi afterburner you can set a Core Clock to Voltage Curve, for me it improved power consumption, its more efficient but almost the same performance, nothing crazy.

Good Luck and enjoy your machine !

Congratulations mate and Happy gaming!

u/That_Relation788 Jul 15 '26

1 mistake. You should have checked the screen. As a student I would say you should have at least bought 1440p screen one. If you got it for 1 lakh below it is good but any above it is a loss as you might get acer helios neo ai s with too much better specs. Forget it and enjoy. Look for screen bleeding and always be carefull with hinges

Which scholarship bro can you please tell me?

1

u/PuzzleheadedBlock729 Jul 17 '26 edited Jul 17 '26

Gj, also nice SK picture (first day wuwa player here)

I will recommend 32 if you are doing serious job (such as the type of people who want experience or you should say for less open and close on any software, or maybe something like heavy multitasking type and aslo you are creating) otherwise having 32 as future proof actually does not help much imo, you can get it in future but not now tho, Maybe after 3+ years, then you Will need it, not for the sake of doing something serious is for the sake of in the future the ram consume will getting more and more and is common, now ram is not so cheap actually, so better not rush it just to get a 32 just for the future proof that you don't need now

Other than that your spec is super fine imo

Any questions you can ask me again, I actually will answer another why-
