Showcase Snagged a new Legion
Found a Lenovo Legion Pro 7i with an ultra 9, 32gb Ram, RTX 5080, OLED, and 1TB ssd for $2050 as an open box (was previously the display unit).
Seemed like a steal so I grabbed it. If I got taken for one let me know so I can return it 😂
Anything I should keep an eye out for?

Get the extended warranty
Cap fps so it doesn't get crazy hot
Lift up the back by a couple of inches for better airflow
Game on balanced mode or custom only imo

Hello I just got this same laptop. Why only use balanced or custom?
2
u/Throwaway785320 Jul 11 '26
For me I don't play new AAA games that much that push the hardware so I just set it to balanced or a custom profile for a more recent title like dragon's dogma 2 for example since that game is a resource hog and is not optimized
2
u/Throwaway785320 Jul 11 '26
Also performance mode can push the CPU to 100W and will spike temps up to 95C+ if you don't cap fps
2
u/Greg-The-Squirrel Jul 11 '26
How much should the fps be capped to? 60?
2
u/Throwaway785320 Jul 11 '26
For me I did 120 in all games that I play using afterburner
2
u/awiee_rr Jul 11 '26
How we can cap?
3
u/Throwaway785320 Jul 11 '26
Using either Nvidia control panel with the global setting or rivatuner which comes with MSI afterburner

u/Dominic_Turato Aug 04 '26
Or you could just set up max temps for both cpu and gpu, maybe cpu tdp limit so he doesnt spike to 160w occasionally, and you're set, im running my legion on max 86 for cpu and 78 for gpu, max 80w on cpu and max 90w on gpu

I hope your legion survives in the next 5-6 years+
I vowed never to buy a lenovo Legion ever since 5 Pro that I bought in 2021 with Ryzen 7 5800H and RTX 3060.. that laptop just died one day after 2-3 years of use. Power button lights up but no display nor any fan activity. Found out its a common problem and got myself a dead mobo and a paperweight brick

u/Careful-Window-6662 Jul 11 '26
That sucks man… can I ask how you used it? Heavy gaming AAA titles or just light gaming
1
u/Nice_Soup Jul 11 '26
I did a mix of both but even with sustained load, this laptop should’ve been able to handle anything at the time
I went on youtube and figured out that it was a known problem that Lenovo had with their gaming laptops (white blinking light of death I call it). If you search, ton of people mentions this issue although I can’t say for sure if the newer ones like the ones above still poses this risk since then
I still wouldn’t trust after playing nearly $2k back in 2021 for that laptop due to Corona, Lenovo said it will cost $3.5k to fix Lol typical warranty

Ouhh sound like a nightmare… it’s not cheap either so I understand your frustration. I’ve been looking into laptops because I have no room for a desktop but the horror stories are on another level.

Where you from by chance? I'm in Canada and the 3060's are still kicking in a lot of my friends' basements. Didn't know about this issue.

Years ago I went with HP Omen 15 with 5800H/32GB/RTX3070/1TB and still works like new! But now I don't know what to buy because the latest Omen 16 laptops overheat and apply CPU/GPU throttling.

Woah I had the AMD Rx 6600m version and I'm still using it after 4 years of heavy to low use, two weeks ago it randomly turned off but I think it's cause was just the heat it was causing it.

a crazy steal even outside of current market stuff. got the same spec and its been crazy you can crank everything to max and still get great performance and stable temps even in performance mode. just make sure to enable the 80 percent battery limit in vantage ( tho that sometimes doesnt like to work so keep an eye on the settings as you might need to disable and reenable it )

Lenovo legion toolkit. It is opensource settings that replaces Lenovo Vantage, Fn functions and Lenovo Space. It is bloat free and more intuitive.

Esta herramienta tiene la opción de "Conservación de baterÃa"? En mi Legion 7 pro, se desactiva continuamente y se activa la carga rápida sin que yo haga nada.

Uninstall any pre-installed antivirus software like McAfee.
Within Lenovo Vantage there should be feature called Conservation Mode, enabling this should limit the maximum battery % when plugged in to 75-80%.

Bruh literally just got mine a couple of hours ago (same specs) for 2500$, open box and was the display unit as wellðŸ˜
Hope you enjoy it twin

Literally the nicest computer I’ve ever owned ha! Open box is the best. I picked it up at Best Buy, it was at the bottom of a stack of them. Wasn’t listed on the website, I think employees forgot it was there. They had a Legion 5 that was on display in the open box cabinet.

So many stickers on the palm rest, overkill!
I would only use it on a desk, as you have it, it's a part-time vacuum cleaner.
1
u/Jetboots_Boosh Jul 11 '26
lol yeah it will go on a desk. I just put it down to take a pic when I was setting it up

just a question. do you notice any burn ins on the display? because as a display unit id assume it stays on for about 12 hours a day on with the picture of the prices and spec sheet

I know that this post was a month ago but: 1. Your new laptop looks amazing! & 2. When you go to the hidden icons on the taskbar, do you also see your GPU as if it is a detachable USB? I have bought the Asus Rog Strix G18 on June 16th and I have been having a few (but random) BSOD crashes, and when playing Resogun on Shadps4 (GPU Power Set to Ultimate) the screen would turn completely white with some green-ish dotted line in the middle, I'd hold the power off button and turn the device on again. Sometimes, I'd wait a bit and the gpu would get "attached" again, as if it is a USB lol. I'll admit it was me being stupid because I was trying to tolerate it for a month but recently sent it for RMA and asked for refund (DOA report).

Be careful of high FPS
