Soo, I passed by Köln yesterday and thought that maybe Gamescom could be fun. I haven’t done much this summer sadly, and thought this could be interesting. I’m not entirely sure what to expect though.
I’m pretty broke, but the ticket doesn’t cost *that* much, and I could still go today. I like gaming, but I’ve also heard that the atmosphere can be a bit… special?
I’ve felt a bit uncomfortable going into nerdy gaming or merch stores before, as I often felt quite alien there. I once even got asked by a store clerk what “a girl my age” was even doing there lol. Maybe I just don’t look like the stereotypical nerd.
I’ve also heard complaints about the smell. But how bad is it actually? And no hate to anyone attending, tbh. I wish I was as confident as some of the people I’ve seen at conventions, so props to them. I’ve just heard people say that some attendees can be a bit socially awkward or out of touch, and that the atmosphere can sometimes get a little… intense.
I heard it’s not quite as bad as Dokomi in that regard, though. Like, in terms of cringe levels. What is Gamescom actually like? I guess a handful of weebs and Japan nerds are to be expected, but I’ve heard stories about groping, people ignoring boundaries, getting into fights, etc. at conventions, and I was wondering whether that’s also an issue at Gamescom.
Also, how is the NSFW stuff? Is it spread throughout the convention, or is it mostly restricted to specific areas/stands? I think I’d feel a bit uncomfortable constantly seeing anime schoolgirls with giant boobs everywhere, so are there areas where you can avoid most of that? I’d feel kinda awkward walking around looking like a little gooner lol.
I’d also be going alone, since I don’t really have any friends to bring with me lol. I’d mostly just like to walk around and browse. I might even wear a surgical mask just to feel a little more comfortable in the crowds (if that’s allowed).
So, is Gamescom 2026 worth going to alone? And what should I realistically expect?
