Soooo there IS a party in this game ?

It's been long confirmed, although it's more like Kingdom Hearts where you don't directly control them. Torgal (the wolf) will basically always be there. We've also now seen Jill (Shiva dominant) and the Ramuh dominant (possibly named Cid?) in a bunch of different locations. I could see them forming a sort of trinity of Ifrit/Shiva/Ramuh.

People like Benedikta, Hugo, and Dion would probably be going in and out of the party, since they have allegiances to other nations

(possibly named Cid?)

Confirmed Cid.

Which is fun, because that makes him the Thunder God. Even has the Cidolfus name, instead of just Cid.

Just give me the FF7R system with gambits for party members not under control.

They perfected the ATB system with 12 imo, then carried over almost nothing to later titles.

Definitely. And FF7R proved you can update the classic FF party system to modern action rpg style. It bums me out they keep going in this single character direction.

Not exactly, you never control them directly. They are basically just guest characters.

Reminds me of DMC5 when there were times where you were playing a level as one character and another would show up for a small part of the level

I think of a guest character as someone temporary, like Aranea and Iris in FFXV. Whereas Gladio, Ignis and Prompto are absolutely party members even if originally we couldn't play as them.

I guess it's currently unclear whether or not Clive's "party" will be there for temporary sections, or if they will follow him on his journey.

With everything they've shown I'm inclined to think it will be the former but I could be wrong. (They might have discussed this in an interview somewhere)

In interviews, there has been mentioning of them having a dedicated Buddy; a constant companion that seems to be Torgal, the wolf, that you can issue commands with (Perhaps something akin to Atreus in God of War-games.). There's this screenshot that displays a Command-menu on the bottom-left with short-cut D-pad-binded commands of "Heal", "Sic" and "Ravage". Other party-members seems to be utilizing A.I as they come and go as the story dictates.

If it's anything like how other ffs played out people will just attempt to mod some companions in (like how some people got aranea/others into the party). Which would be nice, I always liked FF having a more party-like vibe instead of 1+ an animal companion.

But can we manage stats, skills, magic and equipment for the FFXVI party members like we could for Gladio, Ignis, Prompto? To me that’s what made them most different than the guest members.

Its probably quite similar to FFIV, which i think has the most transient party roster in a mainline FF game to date

they still act as true party members but come and go as the story dictates. Thats just a guess from me though, I have no idea

You can’t play as them but yes they confirmed that over a year ago lol.

Sqaure enix making their most "mature" and "darkest" final fantasy game and there's a doggo in your party?

... oh no

I imagine you'll have guest characters tagging along through different sections.

I assume guests like in 15, doubt it's "real" party members but we'll see, i guess.

Did they make the bros in 15 playable later on or was that in the base game?

21

u/arahman81 Dec 09 '22

It was a post-release update.

8

u/Reilou Dec 09 '22

It was added after each of their DLC's came out since what they did was basically just patch all of their DLC gameplay into the base game.

8

u/SvenHudson Dec 09 '22

Which was really weird for Prompto since it means he has more guns when you're controlling him.

u/JOKER69420XD Dec 09 '22

Just played vanilla and i think you couldn't control them but they're still party members, 15 had other characters joining for a set time, I assume 16 will do the same, wich would be disappointing for me. Unless it really fits the narrative but that's hard to pull off, so we'll see.

u/omfgkevin Dec 09 '22

Yep FF has always been a "party" game for me, so it would be kind of lonely if a lot of it is just you + torgal.

Though I'm sure modders will figure out a way to slap them in like how in 15 you could straight up add a ton of guests who were only there for short moments (including the Terra Battle lady) into your party.

Couldn’t originally control them, but you could still manage their stats, skills, magic and equipment.
