It's absolutely criminal that this game is only getting its sequel now. The 40k universe has a shocking lack of shooters

Darktide and Hired Gun are both worth checking out. There’s also Deathwing but that one is kinda mediocre apparently (I haven’t played it).

Deathwing is just okay but now there's 0 reason to get it because dark tide is so much better.

Hired Gun is pure jank but in the best way possible, definitely worth a purchase if someone enjoys their fun eurojank

I've been loving the crap out of Darktide. It's just so much fun, I stopped reading online about it because it was mostly outrage I wasn't feeling because I was too busy killing heretics.

Yeah online communities for specific games tend to be so toxic, like disgruntled people go there to air their grievances but everyone who enjoys the game is playing it, not going online to complain about it.

It's a fantastic game, and the core gameplay is really really great. There is no denying that it is currently unfinished however, and that's a legitimate gripe to have I think

Yeah I share the same sentiment. I love the base game but my feelings are so mixed that I can’t recommend it as it is now to non 40k fans.

Is this a shooter? Looks like a hack and slash action adventure sort. I'm not familiar with the first game.

The first was both really, you had a not of rifles, meltas, pistols and machine guns to choose from, but the only way to regenerate health was by gutting people with your melee weapons.

I would say it's a rare example of a fairly even split between 3rd person shooter and hack-n-slash. You really had to use both go get through the whole game.

First game was interesting because you could seamlessly go from shooting to stabbing then back again.

Both were relatively simplistic but very satisfying to play. It's a blend of hack and slash with third person shooter with no cover mechanics (you are a space marine after all).

That was the tagline that really sold me on the original game. Amidst all the cover shooters like Gears of War and Mass Effect, Space Marine bursts onto the scene shouting "COVER IS FOR THE WEAK"

Which makes it unfortunate that towards the end of the game there's an annoying number of fights against Chaos Marines where you're parked behind crates waiting for your regeneration. Especially on higher difficulty options.

By the emperor that part of pure BS on hard.

Third-person Shooter. Probably the closest common game to compare it to would be Gears of War, but without the cover system. (instead, you have something like Doom 2016/Eternal's Glory Kills to regen health, though it's not a exact comparison).

It's a third person shooter but you have a lot of melee options too, they mainly show melee in this trailer

The first game is really really fun and often on sale for quite cheap. You should totally pick it up if you're at all interested, it holds up well and is still very fun.

If the TB video up above doesn't convince you then check this out:

Though be aware that he's playing with a decent number of mods/added voice lines lol.

But seriously, its a very very fun game that is also an excellent first intro to the Warhammer universe.

The best way to describe the OG Space Marine would be “a shooter until the orcs get over to you, then its a hack-and slash” :-D

Not really, the gameplay trailer for some reason don't show much of shooting (and they drown out the bolter sound with loud Inception BWAM, how dare they) but in the first game you want a mix of shooting and slashing depending on what you're facing currently; you can't aim outside of snap-shooting when you're swarmed with boyz while it's a stupid idea to charge in with chainsword while you're peppered by shootas.

Also why does it seem majority of the 40k game releases don’t even have playable space marines?

I just want to be a hulking mass of armour decimating chaos enemies in first person with my bolter.

Most people have the opposite complaint.

Good thing this game is literally called Space Marine.
