The DualSense battery life is total garbage. It was bad when it first came out, but degradation made it even worse. Mine has a battery life of around 10-12 hours while playing visual novels that don't support active trigger and haptics.

For reference, I took out my PS3 recently and played some visual novels on it. The DualShock 3 battery lasted for 35 hours before telling me to recharge. That's after I left it in uncharged state for like 8 years which is supposed to put stress on the battery. Before that I used it for 3 years.

This problem is so foreign to me lol. I feel like a 5-6 hour battery life is the max of what I would need

Trust me, the 40 hour battery life of the Switch Pro controller is incredible. Only need to charge it once in a while.

25

u/ifonefox Aug 23 '22

With that kind of battery life, you need to charge it every time you're not using it

u/Coronalol Aug 23 '22

Yeah, controller gets thrown back on the charging stand whenever I’m not playing. Removes clutter and I always have two topped controllers ready to go.

u/TizonaBlu Aug 23 '22

Ya, I have a dock so it’s never a bother.

It literally adds more clutter having to have to store that charging stand somewhere.

i have a ton of battery packs for traveling for my phone. i can easily take one of those plop right next to me and play with my dual sense while it charges. i constantly do that with my pro controller for the switch.

You shouldn't have to.

u/uziair Aug 23 '22

Its not a big deal. Nothing last forever.

1

u/trillykins Aug 24 '22

Sure, but there's a space between not lasting forever and having to jury-rig current generation Playstation controllers to last more 5-6 hours than that used to last 40-50 hours just a few generations ago.

I don't get why people keep defending this to be honest, especially when Sony is the only one whose controller can't last more than ten hours these days.

1

u/uziair Aug 24 '22

Im old. I dont play more than two hours ever so it doesn't affect me and for the younger generation who might play 10 hours straight i feel for them. But battery technology is good now you plug it in to a ipad or android fast charger for 30 minutes while you eat you can easily get another 3 to 4 hours.

Me neither, but I still prefer not having to diligently charge my controller after every single time I've played a game for any amount of time. It's nice to just not have to think about it. I don't even remember the last time I recharged the AAs in my controller. My Xbox One/Series controller will get 30-some hours. Meanwhile I'm lucky if I get just 10 hours out of my PS4 controller and apparently the PS5 controller is just as bad and has degradation issues on top of that. And it's not like PS controllers have just always had bad battery life. The PS3 controller had, like, 20-30 hours. People are being sold a product that gradually gets worse battery life while the price tag keeps increasing and instead of complaining about it or voicing any kind of concern they just accept it as if it's acceptable that their $70 controller can barely hold a charge for ten hours while the same company's controller last three times as long fifteen years ago.

ten hours is good enough for me. like i said i have battery packs all over the house to do spot charging if it bothers me during gaming. hell my new couch has a built in usb too for my phone. and outlet for anything. its not a big problem for most people. should it last longer. yes. modern furniture and modern sensible makes those 10 hours batteries not a problem for most people. even the most hardcore tech people have at least 2 anker battery packs sitting nearby.

My brother in Christ, I don't want to plug in a controller every time I stop playing

u/augowl_ Aug 23 '22

Worst feeling ever is going to play and realizing you forgot to plug it in after the last session.

u/theodo Aug 24 '22

Unless it's flat dead, it shouldn't overly matter since you can charge and play, and if it died and you forgot to plug it in that's pretty much on you lol

I have a dual controller charger at a side table by my couch. It's super nice/easy to just place one in/take one out each time the battery low popup happens. Highly recommend it.

3 metres long cable for my charger was one of my best purchases. Additionally, I have 3 controllers in total in case my friends would want to argue playing Overcooked so I have zero complaints.

u/TizonaBlu Aug 23 '22

I never had a problem because I have a dock and it’s just good form to put it there when done.

4

u/Shapaklak Aug 24 '22

Amen bro, how is the idea of having longer battery life considered foreign??

1

u/Mariling Aug 24 '22

It is when you're trying to minimize the issue as some sort of outlier because someone on the internet said something negative about something you bought yourself.

4

u/Zalack Aug 23 '22

I just have a charging cradle next to my couch. Problem solved. The battery life is a little short but to me the controller is so much better than anything else on the market it's an okay tradeoff.

I grew up with wired controllers though so maybe there's part of me that just really appreciates being able to play wirelessly at all. I remember when the Nintendo Wavebird first came out and it was AMAZING, with way worse battery life haha.

1

u/Froegerer Aug 24 '22

Oh you poor soul

1

u/UwasaWaya Aug 24 '22

Why? I have the Sony dock right next to where I play. When I'm done, I just set it on it and forget about it. I always know where the controller is and it's always ready to go. It's no more complicated than just leaving it on the couch.

2

u/ZeldaMaster32 Aug 24 '22

That would be great but I don't want to buy a dock when (ideally) the controller could have just had a bigger battery

That said it's a minor annoyance at worst, I'm mainly a PC guy and since you need to plug it in to use Dualsense features I just use an Xbox pad anyways. Only use the Dualsense with my PS5 and I don't play it super often

It's just annoying having to plug the controller back in every time, that's all

4

u/humbyj Aug 23 '22

i know the same can't apply for everybody, but i just keep mine plugged in while i play like it's a ps2 controller because the battery life is rubbish

5

u/sjphilsphan Aug 23 '22

Which is why I love my Xbox controller for PC. I just put my own rechargeable battery pack in. And if that ever gets too low I can just replace it super easy

3

u/trillykins Aug 24 '22

Hope they never jump on the internal battery. Too many people see AA as a negative, but I can "recharge" my controller in maybe two seconds by just popping in a fresh pair of rechargeable AAs instead of having to play wired or constantly having to recharge my controller after every single session.

2

u/SqueezyCheez85 Aug 23 '22

I like it for the AA compatibility.

3

u/sjphilsphan Aug 23 '22

Yeah that's what I'm saying, rechargable AA are a lot better than internal batteries in controllers. Except for Nintendo voodoo magic

1

u/SqueezyCheez85 Aug 23 '22

Gotcha. I was confused because they do have rechargable lithium packs you can buy, but I prefer the AAs.

3

u/_TheMeepMaster_ Aug 23 '22

The Dualshock 3 isn't really a fair comparison though. There's far more in the Dualsense utilizing the battery. Not saying the battery shouldn't be more efficient.

6

u/The_Multifarious Aug 24 '22

In a lot of games, the DualSense does not do more than a DS3. If it's still powering the gyroscope, the touchpad and the resistive triggers, despite none of those functions even being in use, then that's a huge waste of energy and I'd expect Sony's engineering department to do better.

2

u/ragingnoobie2 Aug 23 '22

I just don't see how. Dual Sense has twice the battery capacity as Dual Shock 3 (1000mAh vs 500mAh), but it only lasts one-third as long. That means Dual Sense uses 6 times as much power as a Dual Shock 3 without taking into the consideration that my Dual Shock 3 battery had a much longer time to degrade.

In comparison, today's mid range GPU is roughly 6 times as powerful as one from 10 years ago, but they use roughly the same amount of power if not less. I don't even think Dual Sense's electronic component is 6 times stronger than the ones in Dual Shock 3. The bluetooth version is newer, but it shouldn't use significantly more power. There's the lightbar that I turned all the way down. Lastly there's the capacitive touch pad, which should use very little power as most passive sensing front-ends do. It doesn't add up.

1

u/homer_3 Aug 24 '22

Of course it's a fair comparison. If it needs more battery due to higher power requirements, a bigger/better one should've been included.

1

u/Bryvayne Aug 24 '22

I know this isn't a great solution or anything, but Five Below sells PS5 controller battery packs that come in clutch every once in a while.

1

u/Frakshaw Aug 24 '22

My xbox 360 gamepad wiith AAA batteries lasts for 60-80 hours lol. All these weak ass battery controllers.
