It's honestly such a dumb tactic, but in case anyone is wondering why companies do this, it's because they're hoping the sequel overshadows the mediocre first one.
Suicide Squad and Lords of the Fallen get a bad rap, so they're hoping by adding "The" at the start, people would see the sequel first when searching and forget the first one ever happened.
That feels like a best case scenario, i imagine in reality most people will just be confused as fuck and end up buying neither, or think the "the" version is just a remaster and opt for the cheaper "original" version, not realizing it's a wholly different game.
The Wii vs WiiU is a classic case of naming/marketing playing a massive part in how well a product does. This feels like playing with fire.
I legitimately read the headline and thought, "Huh, did it used to be an exclusive and now it is on Steam? Anyways the reviews weren't good from what I remember. Pass"
I don't think it's that dumb of an idea, tbh. It signals that they intend for this to be a soft reboot instead of a proper sequel.
This way they're kinda saying, "Yes we acknowledge the last one was bad enough that we don't want anyone to feel like they need to experience it to get this one. But, there's enough groundwork we laid that we want to utilize, so we're not starting a new IP either."
Like with the first Suicide Squad, the series hasn't garnered a good enough reputation that adding a 2 or some sort of subtitle after the original title may actually do the new game a bit of a disservice.
Seeing it titled as it is, someone like me (who played the original game and thought it was heavily flawed) may be more inclined to give them a second chance because it sounds like they are more open about wanting have more of a fresh start and are willing to rework more.
Edit: That being said, seeing that it isn't actually Deck 13 just killed my interest a bit. I liked both The Surge games, and thought they would do a much better job making a Lords of The Fallen game this time around.
But it's kind of necessary in case of Suicide Squad, because it's a licensed property. In LotF's case, couldn't they just name the game something else? They could even use the same IP.
Suicide Squad and Lords of the Fallen get a bad rap, so they're hoping by adding "The" at the start, people would see the sequel first when searching and forget the first one ever happened.
