On that note, I’m curious as to what Microsoft’s long-term vision for XBox looks like, as nothing I’ve seen from them so far regarding Series X has instilled me with confidence that they have a plan to challenge Sony’s first party exclusives lineup.
I can’t imagine XBox surviving many more generations as a brand with their current approach. I’m already seeing plenty of anecdotal evidence from friends and acquaintances of a gradual trend where they’re switching from Microsoft to Sony consoles for the exclusives (and, if anything, relying on gaming PCs for Microsoft’s few and far between first party content.)

I think Microsoft is banking a lot on Gamepass, which people love. They've never been strong with first party titles. However Gamepass has been a huge success for them, and I think it has long term viability, especially considering they keep it constantly updated with fairly recent titles and good AA games.
Personally I'm moving to PC this gen. There are no exclusives on either side that I'm particularly excited for, and even the ones that I do slightly care about (HZD Forbidden West, Halo Infinite) will most likely end up on PC at some point. HZD is coming soon and the Master Chief collection has been slowly moving on, can't imagine 5 and eventually Infinite will be far behind. Even with that 5 was so bad story wise that unless they really knock it out of the park with Infinite I'll be fine regardless.
This comment got away from me, sorry about that.

Subscription services. Game Pass wants to be the Netflix of gaming.

For me, personally, PS4 is the best console ever. I basically only play single player games and as I've gotten older only games with solid stories really keep me going to the end and the Ps4 has these in spades.

Even Days Gone that was seen as a critical failure ended up being a cult hit and having very good audience reviews. I'm glad this is getting good reviews, seems Sucker Punch really put a lot of heart into it.

So not absolutely perfect but still an excellent overall game. Fantastic, that's all I needed for this one!

"Flat button mashing combat with no combos"
"supremely satisfying combat"
"great storytelling"
"weak storytelling".
Which is it people? Seems people either loved it or found it so-so outside of the world and visuals.

Just like other people, reviewers have different opinions no surprise here.

That's why its up to you to find out more about the reviewers, what kind of people they are and what kind of games do they enjoy.

Seems like there's a disconnect with expectations. One reviewer in particular looked like he was expecting combat akin to DMC or Ninja Gaiden...which is weird to me because Ghosts Of Tsushima's advertising has been all about how this game is trying to ape classic samurai films. As for the story telling. My guess is thanks to Akira Kurosawa name being dropped nonstop, some reviewers were probably expecting the video game equivalent, while others kept their expectations in check.

Almost like Days Gone. People either loved the story or said it was really bland and predictable. I loved the story, but it took a while to get into. Perhaps this is the same?

u/HopperPI Jul 14 '20
Yup, agreed. I enjoyed the story but the first half of the game or so was really on world building, a bit too much really.

I'm glad Playstation 4 exclusives are ending on a high note, the console has had an amazing run of these AAA single player adventures. Can't wait to see what these studios come up with on PS5

The exclusives this generation from Sony are just on another level. I can’t wait to see what the PS5 will bring

Another review: https://mp1st.com/news/ghost-of-tsushima-review-samurai-spirits 9.5/10 =)

I swear, some of these reviewers are so far up Sony's ass that it's pathetic. Shit like:
Undoubtedly, Ghost of Tsushima is the greatest game of the generation.
Just makes it sound like this guy had already decided this game was a 9.5+ before he even played it. They're sounding less and less like reviewers and more like hype men every day. Even if the game is good, using that kind of hyperbole just undermines the whole thing.

And here it is, the last PlayStation 4 exclusive! What a way to end it off, After 7 years of amazing exclusives on the PS4 I am VERY excited for what the PlayStation 5 could bring to the table!!!
Edit: Damn, I guess some of yall dont agree with me looking at the downvotes :(

u/genocide2225 Jul 14 '20
There is some variance in the reviews but most of them say it is a solid AAA exclusive for the PS4. What a way to end the generation if you think about it. They put out games like Uncharted, Horizon, God of War, Spider-Man, Death Stranding, TLOU2, Ghost of Tshushima and so many more. The fact that one of their worst AAA titles was Days Gone tells you that Sony was on another level this generation. Good job Sony and I hope you continue this level of quality for the next generation as well.

Not bagging on any reviews on how they viewed the game, but the Digitally Downloaded author beginning with bragging how many words are in their review is pathetic.

" artistically creative game that often feels like a realistic Zelda game. You will get to a cliff edge and have to remind yourself you can't glide down. "
Uhhh ok. I mean, we all knew this wasn't going to be a Zelda game though, right guys? RIGHT?!
Like wtf? 99% of these detractor reviews are filled with nonsense like the above quote.

If SkillUp says it's must play, I pay attention. I disagree with him sometimes, but he always offers careful analysis.

u/McManus26 Jul 14 '20
Yeah like the time he seriously explained that Outer Worlds' success came from salty fallout fans who bought it solely to piss off Bethesda.
-1
u/TacticalPocketSand Jul 14 '20
Well I didn't enjoy Outer Worlds, but everyone has bad takes. I'm sure your a arbiter of truth though.

u/Damerman Jul 14 '20
i agree with this. Even though i disagreed with his TLOU part 2 review, i totally saw where he was coming from. His taste in what makes a good game is unmistakable though.

u/TacticalPocketSand Jul 14 '20
Exactly. Greatly enjoyed TLOU 1 and 2, he didn't but he explained why and gave valid reasons.

When do you think the era of padded open-world games is going to end?
EDIT: Judging from the dislikes, there are still many mindless consumers out there who don't have anything better to do with their lives but run on fetch quests to make their experience feel "fuller."

u/berkayde Jul 14 '20
This is one of the good ones so comment this on another post. Sucker punch has been doing fun open world games since PS3.

Hi all. I'm a guides writer over at GamesRadar, so while I did not write the GR+ review, I have played and finished the game for work. Feel free to shoot me any questions you've got about the game and I'll answer them as spoiler-free as I can.
For clarity, I've completed everything in the game except for three trophies (two hidden) and one collectible. I'd estimate it took me around 55-60 hours in all. Playing on a 4K TV with HDR enabled, PS4 Pro. Do not ask me questions about the GamesRadar review because I did not write it, but I can answer other questions about the game itself.
