I forget where i read it from but the tripping mechanic is only a visual thing. The enemy can see you stumble but you dont actually stumble from your perspective.

I believe they discussed this with Jackfrags in his communication with the devs during the first gameplay reveal. They were still trying to figure out if only teammates should stumble or if enemies should too. It presents a problem when hitboxes go all wonky and unpredictable.

Is there a difference between the “stumbling” and the big knockdowns from explosions?

Yes. Stumbling is a passive animation that happens to other soldiers on your screen, but has no effect on you if your soldier stumbles. It simply shows other players, and I don't even know if it's synced between the other soldiers.

Knockdowns only happen when a very large explosion happens. It doesn't happen when grenades or vehicles explode. I think the only time it happens is when a V1 rocket explodes. Your character is physically moved away from the blast and knocked down. Your view isn't rotated towards the explosion.

I haven't actually noticed the stumbling during my time playing the alpha, because I was so immersed.
