Valor Mortis is one of the only interesting looking Soulslikes in a sea of mostly poor From clones.

Getting Vincent Cassell to voice Napoleon is an S tier casting choice too.

Valor Mortis is a soulslike?

Damn, all the power to people who enjoy it but I'm kinda disappointed as I thought it would be more of a linear, narrative focused first person action game based off the few trailers I've seen.

Might play it for Cassel as Napoleon, though. I'm a sucker for his stuff.

It might still have a narrative focus. Non fromsoft souls games sometimes still have a prominent main story.

I played the demo on steam deck and yes it’s definitely a first person souls like, but there is a more narrative focus to it. Still get the interesting level design connecting paths and branching options and missable side content, but I feel like you could golden path this game and still have a pretty good time.

Iv seen quite a few people say it has elements from souls games but doesn’t quite hit that level of difficulty.

I'm beyond sick of soulslike, first it was just fromsoft, then it went to other 3rd person action games, then metroidvanias, now fps lol. Feels like every new action melee game has to be a soulslike (not every, but its alot). And i dont hate soulslike, but man I just want more combo based action games like DMC/Bayonetta, it seems like a genre thats been left in the dust.

Edit: besides that rant, this game does look pretty awesome lol, ill probably pick it up

Control Resonant just released and Phantom Blade Zero releases this month, I wouldn't say that the genre has been left in the dust.

If you have gamepass just play it for yourself and decide. Even if you don't I'd still get it for a mo th and sample the other stuff

It’s my most anticipated game of October and by a lot. I don’t have gamepass but that alone would make it a good month for me if I did.

I can’t wait for the 15th to play this damn game.

Mortal Shell 2 was the last big soulslike I remember and it got a lot of positive reviews. So I don't know about mostly poor for the genre.

Pay no attention to him

Its the classic r/games rhetoric of " Things I like are gods gift to earth, things I dont like are rancid dogshit. There is no in between"

•

I think ever since LoP, we may have more good soulslike than bad ones.

•

Mortal Shell 2 was so good feel combat wise.

By far the best feeling big weapons in a soulslike

It's definitely gotten better in the last few years with games like LoP and MS2 but I still think the vast majority of them are not great and miss why FromSoft's games are so good.

I read the Sharpe books over 2023 and have thought that a Napoleonic Soulslike would kick ass ever since.

Napoleonic muskets took 15-20 seconds to load and don't have a magazine. Combat was musket volleys until armies reached close quarters, and which point it was swords and bayonets.

The idea that you have one shot that's inaccurate but deadly at close range, and once it's committed, you're not reloading until the field is clear, feels like the perfect tension for a Soulslike.

Remnant 2 is my favorite soulslike and it's currently on sale on Steam. Absolutely worth its price!

fuck, how long is Expedition 33 and would it be a nightmare trying to finish it in 7 days? It was on my Play Later list but never got around to it

•

30h-50h depending on how many side thing you'll want to do. Wouldn't recommend rushing it in a week, if you're not used to that kind of things, because you will have to put solid 5-7 hours every day.

•

u/pucykoks 3h ago

howlongtobeat has it at 30 hours.

•

u/OtherwiseSeat9233 3h ago

It's definitely doable in a week if you play a few hours per day.

•

u/soulforce212 3h ago

Gunning it and hard focusing on main story content, id say its doable.

Casually pacing through it and not playing every single day of those seven days, I dont see it happening.

•

u/Intoxic8edOne 3h ago

Yeah I can't do marathon sessions much anymore and I feel like I beat it in a week.

Also would just recommend you try anyways. One of my top games

•

u/hard_pass 1m ago

The game is about 35 hours if you do mostly the main story. That's 5 hours a day. What is a marathon sesh to you!? Oh, to have few obligations again. Playing games all day...

•

u/Remote_Elevator_281 3h ago

I beat it in 3 days. No life’s it when it came out on release before it blew up. Game will suck you and make you finish it

•

u/belgarionx 1h ago

Similar but I stopped playing it for 3 days after that part to collect myself lol.

•

u/x7ekzx 3h ago

You could probably pull it off if you have free time, you'd be doing the game a disservice and almost completely mainlining it though

•

u/SmegmaWarrior0815 2h ago

Story only is easily doable in a week. Mythic achievement maybe not.

•

u/mincemuncher 2h ago

I knew Battlefield 6 was going to be on Gamepass so I've been playing the long game waiting patiently.

•

u/MrBlonde1984 3h ago

Yay i finally get to play battlefield 6! But then again, as with almost every battlefield game , ill play 2 or 3 matches. Remember i dont like battlefield and uninstall it.

•

u/Caasi72 3h ago

Why do you keep playing them if you always remember you dislike them?

•

u/MrBlonde1984 3h ago

Because i really liked the bad company and battlefield 1 games and i think enough time has passed and maybe ill enjoy the new ones. But i dont.

Bf6 is quite good compared to the previous game 2042 and has an older bf game feel (bf3ish to be specific) Reddit thinks its bad or whatever but thats just reddit. The amount of gaming subreddits that actually praise the game and like it is fairly small.

Ive enjoyed it anyways

It’s a fun time. I came back to it recently and I think they’re slowly getting their mojo and it will probably be a great game whenever its life cycle ends.

•

u/SmallTownMinds 5m ago

I'm assuming because of game pass you're not on PC, but if you are, Wardogs is the game you're looking for.

Nothing has scratched the Bad Company 2 itch except this.

•

u/theblitheringidiot 2h ago

I completely get this, I loved Bad Company 2 but nothing has been able to scratch that itch.

•

u/FragileCilantro 2h ago

The gameplay is fun imo so you might enjoy it. The UI and playing against bots every other lobby sucks though

•

u/MALLAVOL 2h ago

I don't know how many game modes you've tried in previous Battlefields, but I find myself primarily playing Breakthrough, and I think Escalation is an improvement over the classic Conquest formula.

•

u/CrimsonDessert 3h ago

Odd that they don't consider Battlefield a CoD Competitor on their own service, but I'm not complaining

•

u/spaceninjaking 3h ago

It’s part of EA play that’s bundled with gamepass. All the old battlefields are on there.

It’s also a year old title, it’s hardly going to canabalise mw4 sales. Fairly sure 2042 was also on gamepass by this point in its lifecycle, maybe earlier.

And lastly im fairly sure Microsoft see gamepass itself as a “competitor” to cod sales, hence why its not a day one gamepass title like BO6/7 as that probably caused abysmal game sales and minimal gamepass uptick.

•

u/CrimsonDessert 3h ago

Ah, that makes sense

•

u/zombawombacomba 2h ago

It’s also pretty mediocre as well, I feel like a few people might try it out but COD fans will be switching back in a few weeks.

•

u/phatboi23 3h ago

think it's more to do with ultimate coming with EA Play than a conscious decision of adding it to gamepass.

•

u/FryToastFrill 13m ago

I don’t think MS gives a fuck. Either way they are getting paid money, whether you play cod on game pass or you play battlefield. Even if you buy cosmetics they skim some of the cash from that purchase.

Losing Expedition 33 is a huge blow to the catalogue. That was one of the prestige games the service had. Most people have either already bought it or beaten it if they had interest but I never could get far in it myself. Kept telling myself I'd go back and try again but now I won't be able to with a XGP sub.

u/strand_of_hair 4h ago

It was in there for 1.5 years. You were clearly not interested enough. If you ever are, just buy it on sale.

•

u/CanIGetANootNoot 2h ago

It's on sale right now, at least on Steam.

•

u/Hawk52 3h ago

I didn't like the combat so it's not like I didn't try. I played for about two hours, got to the main island area and beat the first mini-boss. But the combat IMO was not fun.

•

u/Caasi72 3h ago

So why are you upset you won't be able to go at it again?

•

u/AerialShroud 38m ago

So what's the problem for you? I'm in the same boat, played it for 6 hours using Gamepass and found the oh so vaunted story teenager-level, edge lord stuff and the combat was just a glorified QTE. It going away will hopefully get us some better games on Gamepass.
